Population is just size; there are many very lethal players below 100,000 population, and many chubby couch potatoes over 200,000.
You make a good argument.

Just quickly, looking at the top 20 by defence score, they break down as follows:

H? - 9
VIC - 2
~NC~ - 2
Shade - 1
vCrow - 1
TCol - 1
Unaligned - 1
EE - 1
nCrow - 1
DARK - 1

It's not massively different to the picture from overall points.

/me waits for someone to claim that that's just due to longevity in the game and warlike tendencies.

Twi - where are you?

The most powerful player is the person with a finger hovering over the off-switch in the data centre.

You can get defense points in tournaments as well.  All of my defense points have been gained in tournaments.  Ratio of defense points to attack points often has as much to do with race and playing style as anything else.  I'll bet most of the top players in defense points are elves, whereas many of the top attackers are humans.

Considering the majority of players are elves and humans that would be expected.  Though the number 1 is an orc and he's ahead by quite a bit.

You're only #475. When I look at the top 100 defenders, I see a collection of people who have sieged a great many towns.

I probably phrased my original point badly. You can get a high attack score by hacking apart NPCs, and by attacking tournament squares under favorable conditions. I acknowledge that you can accumulate some defense points in tournaments. However, as a point score, defense still correlates the BEST to power and lethality, even if it doesn't correlate particularly well due to tournament noise. It helps that all the other scores are rather irrelevant.

The best way to judge lethality is to examine the player's stats, history, cities, alliance and allies. You can tell many dangerous players just by looking, but that's subjective judgment, not a numerical ranking.

I think the most powerful is the one who shows up with the most potent weed...then again I may not think that....all this stuff is relative.  This all sounds like a measuring tape shared between teenage boys....not cool. but needed.

Real power in Illy is not tracked by any score whatsoever...  Power in any game like this rests in the ability to influence others to work towards your aims, to build groups of others who have the means to further your own goals.

The Machiavelian masters prefer to work behind the scenes, and those are the ones who wield the real "power" in sandbox games . . .

. . . who knows their real identity?
