Spot on, but one clarification/addition on this.

Commanders who are *not* in armies will *not* participate in combat.  They go home and till the fields instead.

It's automatic, even troops that are not in an army will participate but it's best to make sure all your troops are in an army and under a commander.

When preparing for an attack, is there anything specific that you need to do to assign your army to man the wall or is that automatic.
