I vote protecting yourself first, so upgrading your mage tower would be where i'd start, highly recommend you build to level 15 if possible. Your be able to use the max protection rune spell which is Ward of Destruction that slays up to 250 hostile forces or you could use killing glyph which requires a level 11 mage tower and slays up to 75 hostile forces. Then work on the last option.
You will have to watch your food production too so upgrading your farmyards along with your mage tower may be what you will need to do.

I voted for the last option, but I'd split your effort between that and building low-cost defenses (runes, vault, etc.).

Same here plowing most of my energy into getting resources up. It isnt long before building upgrades cost obscene amounts of resources.
