I would not bother with a spearman nor infantry commander, and I wouldn't touch basic ranged either.

Advanced ranged could be decent for a defense-oriented commander, but for offense or general purposes, one of the two cavalry types all the way for sure.

Besides, it's not like it's hard to get up to light cavalry anyway, and they make a pretty decent choice for commander... heavy cavalry might take a while though (at least in your first city), and it might force you to train some extra speed on all commanders in the army (not just one one of them) so you don't slow the army down.

Would most people agree with this? I have a purely defensive army in the mountains with a lot of spear units. Their commander is a spearman also and I've spent some time leveling him up. Should I retire him and make him a calvery commander?

T1 Spear commander are weak in stats, somewhat useful if their skills lies in enhancing the army, but you can do better, some bow/infantry units have faster base speed, so they are just better in the long run.

T2 spear commanders are slow and WILL drag down the army if it is the slowest unit. (For some races, it is.)

Depends how you trained him and how big your army is. If your army numbers in the thousands and most of your upgrades are divisional, you might as well keep him.

Also, for a purely defensive army you might want to use a ranged commander instead of cavalry.

Just from my own observation, I think this depends on how you level him up.  If you are leveling up stats that apply to the overall army, I don't think it matters what kind of unit you choose for a commander.  If you are leveling up stats that apply to the commander, then obviously the better his base stats are, the better a commander he will be.

For given build cost and upkeep cost the best defense against cavalry is an advanced spearman....

Thank you for the replies. I have him as a defense only commander with upgraded divisional abilities. I'll just keep him then and see how he does. Thanks again all.
