They return a regular scout report (if sent to the temples).  If sent directly to Audrey (the heart) they will be eaten.

messengers definately get corrupted but it is unclear if they ever drop tentacles since they make sngle-unit corrupted armies ( I will know in a few days) .. certainly the chance is very small and it is a pain to send hundreds or thousands of individual messengers.


I agree with the above that it is annoying that it is close to impossible to get to the heart from 2500 squares away in 4 days unless I send either single messengers or my best commanders (which would then disappear forever). I sent many thouands of units to wake the heart up, and now I can't reach it in time except with a few messengers. If I had known when it would awake I could have sent some diplos 2 or 3 days ahead of time, but it doesn't seem to give much warning, especially for something that look months to slowly wake up. If it was awake, say, a week rather than 4 days I believe everyone on the map could get to it with diplos. The location seems fine to me, just the time window is a little too short.

No matter where they put it someone would be far away from it. Plus, they needed to make a very large part of the map unsettlable, there was nowhere to put it near the middle of the map. Also, diplos move much faster, so try those. Not sure if messengers work but they're extremely quick...
