I hope we will see something ike this in the future so we have something to use our magic upkeep for.

Some of us allready have elementals I cant remember if they are free but they could cost mana as upkeep.

I'm totally open as far as unit type goes, but I think mana as a source of upkeep for some kind of unit is a good idea. Especially when you consider that if you're not going to focus on magic, that leads to a lot of mana building up, with the only viable option for use to reinforce wards, etc...

They can be destroyed, and you wouldn't be able to have as many of them. Say 5 mana p/h per zombie or skeleton or something, and go up from there. As an alternative to straight out attacking, they can offer attack and defense bonuses instead of being able to attack or defend themselves. Perhaps add new "graveyard" or "ancient battlefield" terrains that boost those bonuses.

EDIT: and as an added weakness if necessary, they are destroyed when their commander dies.

With an upkeep paid in mana instead of gold. The amount of mana a town can generate is fixed more or less by Mage Tower 20 and would have to compete with spells that have expensive upkeeps, so I do not see this unbalancing the game in any way that cannot be solved with the amount of upkeep per unit of undead.
