An interesting discussion has cropped up in our training alliance (HoTH):

"Should Training Alliances Participate in Tourneys?"

The Illy community has benefited greatly from training alliances. They bring players into the game in a safe fashion and speed the transfer of game knowledge. As such, they have traditionally enjoyed 'Protected' status and in return are (should be) pacifist in their game action.

Some argue that to participate in competitive tournaments violates the protection afforded by the community (a protection that we do not take for granted in HoTH) and thus the non-aggression rules that all HoTH members agree to should extend to tournaments.

Others argue that tournaments are by nature friendly competition and do not represent use of force. This is formalized by the suspension of all NAPs, Confeds, etc on tournament squares. Those that argue this point feel that training for participation in Illy Tournaments is an important part of a players overall Illy training as many alliances (non-training) make tournament play part of their goals/mission.

Since we enjoy the protection of the community we thought it would be appropriate to ask the community about tournament participation. Please vote and voice your opinions. Thanks for your thoughts.

In the main I say yes they should participate in Tournaments but with one reservation.

Most of the disagreement in the community regarding tournaments is centered around the areas surrounding tournament squares and the moving of towns close by to allow easier attacks/reinforcement. If a training alliance does this then it must understand that some may decide to attack those towns as part of the tournament.

As long as the training alliance bears this in mind when deciding if they will participate then I can't see any reason for them not and on a personal level would welcome them.

i think they should be able to participate in a tourney but not under any new player protection, just like anybody else play at your own risk

A controlled environment with in their alliance teaches teamwork, allowing them to learn battle stats, equipment, timing, losses, etc. in a non-war. It is King of the Hill which is not player-based aggression.
All these things are needed if the trainee is going to join in with war-proned alliances and have some understanding of what is going to happen.  I think it is NOT off-base to let them play in Tournaments.

Training alliances should definitely participate in tournaments (if they wish to).  It's a great way to learn. The limitations on HOW training alliances should compete in a variety of ways in Illy (including but not limited to placement of cities) is an interesting one, but probably beyond the scope of this discussion.

Low risk PVP is a perfect opportunity for new players to throw down and get an idea of what long term engagement is like. Vets like to hog all the PVP for themselves, what about the little guys?
