With the recent influx of new players, I am wondering what's the right path of progress for them.
Some of them have set up their own sepreate alliance and although I can understand the emotional reason behind that, I am not sure it's the best thing for them in practice.

And as for the quality of existing training alliances, I am disappointed by the quality of their 'teaching' barring a few.(recruited two graduates last month and we had to ask them to move some of their existing towns as they were horribly placed to defend).

And even those training alliances which are good are facing problem of too many. You can see thier members in GC asking for res as there are not many vets in their alliance to support such a large number. And the biggest problem they are facing is again settling spots as training alliance hardly have a territory of their own, newb's wanting to exodus/tenaril face major issues.

I would like to know the thoughts of community in this regards as I genuinely want to see the new batch of newB's to flourish and provide a wider base for our community.Thumbs Up

the reaction of the community to the arrival of players from LoU has bordered on the predatory, and the last 12-18 months has overseen the dilution of the concept of a training alliance such that the label itself no longer has much meaning. LoU players have witnessed this chaotic environment and are cooperating for their own mutual protection and benefit. what could be more illy than that?

My alliance has gotten some LOU players and we love them a lot! :) As well as non-LOU players that have come because of the increase in advertisement :)

The right path varies from player to player of course. The all-newbie alliances that have popped up lately seem not the best idea to me because no one there knows about the game very well so far. Some of these have died very quickly, but hopefully some will thrive.   But for many players, I think joining an older medium-sized alliance is probably best. In particular, joining an established alliance with some friends (for example other LOU players) seems like the best of both worlds.    Although there are not as many 'official' training alliances as there used to be, there are still plenty of newbie-friendly alliances who love the chance to help some new players after the draught of them for much of last year. I admit it can be a bit hard to know which alliance will help train you in the art of illy when you just start out. I do think more training alliances again would be a good idea. They are not the best for all players, but it is a very good option for some.

Also, the current practice some players are taking of spending some time growing in GC before directly jumping into an alliance is a good one and most newbie guides now suggest this. That way they can find people who not just send resources, not just send alliance invites, but also answer questions/respond to emails/offer advice. They should make contacts with some established players during this time and hopefully stay friends with them regardless of what alliance they choose. That way if they accidently join an alliance that really doesn't suit them, their old-player friends can support them in the (admittedly not always easy) task of leaving one alliance and finding one more suitable. I would hope plenty of established players are willing to be friends with new players, even if they choose an alliance diferent than yours.

I am sorry if, as Angrim says, some of the new players have not been treated well. It can be hard, in particular for the LOU refugees, because LOU is simply a different game and some people simply won't end up enjoying the slow pace and different community of illy.   Are we chaotic and disorganized? sure. But still better than many games I believe. Our responsibility as the illy community continues to be to welcome new players, explain (poiltely!) some of the differences this game might have to others, answer questions. There are an increasing amount of LOU players who have been in illy long enough to start to get a good feel of it, so hopefully those will start being able to help new LOU players in certain ways that non-LOU players can't.   For the rest of us... just help as we can. Can we get better? sure. Though I think we are not doing too bad already.

sorry for the long-winded response with no useful concrete suggestions xD But I do think conversations like this are good since helping new players is part of what makes illy great.

Newbies must choose their own path and everyone's 'best' path is unique. Mistakes can be corrected. Who are we to decide for them?

I have always thought that people should not create alliances until they know the game enough to raise and advise their players but in the case of multiple players all coming across from the same game, I can understand why the concept is appealing. As long as they are not begging for res in GC, I'm all for newbies learning to be self sufficient.

I'm going to weigh in here as a newbie (AND LoU refugee) who has been playing long enough to get somewhat of a feel for Illyriad:

This is a non-issue....the LoU refugees will do just fine without interference or special treatment. These are dedicated gamers who are not afraid to spend when they feel it necessary.
They came as an alliance because that's how you win in LoU. Also it's a bit intimidating for some to start a new game alone.

Could they have done better joining a training alliance?... Possibly, BUT there are enough LoU players already here to give them pointers. I say let them learn the game like everybody else; by studying the forums and asking questions. Chat moves much too fast with too much distraction to be really useful as a teaching medium. There are reams of material in the forums and tutorial videos for that.

As for the feeding frenzy suggested....that's the responsibility of the powers that be. If we do actually protect the newbies and give them a chance; then do protect them and give them a chance as you would any individual newbie. Otherwise, let them learn from their fails... The lessons learned the hard way are the ones you NEVER forget..

Besides, and this is my not so humble opinion, you will lose a good number of them because of the sloooow pace of the game and the complex nature of it as well. Those who do stay will either become L-crow or LoUless (L?) because merging alliances is also how you win in LoU. They will continue to do what they know until one or more realize this is a strategy game ,not a simplistic war game, and adjust their actions accordingly.

Imagine their surprise when they find the only thing you can win here with enough power and smarts is the right to choose the direction of a very playable sandbox game!....lol...Just my two pence...Dragonwort
