Today i was blackmailed by Ropa in GC. He stated he would abandon his account if i did not stop talking about war in Global Chat. In the future there will be several chat channels, but currently there is only GC and your own alliance chat, if you belong to an alliance.
If you do not like the topic being discussed, you have choices, block the people holding the discussion, or simply retire to your Allaince Chat. I have never been banned in Global Chat for behaivour or profanities, i have never followed up with some of the disgusting IGM's that i have received. I expect some of the conversations to be evocitive, because that is how i play Illyriad. So let it be known, i will not back down in Global Chat about the war. It is current to everything that going on at the moment, and sometimes the only way people will know what is going on. I assure by burying your head in the sand, war will not go away. In fact of all the detractors of war talk, i have never seen a mail offering a solution. So until war discussions are deemed against terms and conditions we will maintain our freedom of speech. |

Quite right, too, Hath. As long as the terms and conditions are met, absolutely no player has the right to object to a civilised discussion or comment on any subject at all in GC.

Why would you pay attention to someone threatening to abandon for something you say? let him abandon if he can't handle it. There's so much crap in GC I would have abandoned long time ago if I payed attention to it.
I do think the war discussions are sometimes a bit to present, and people ramble on and on while they know the other sides opinion on the subject won't change. I just stop reading it when I get bored with it. People are free to talk about what they want, not what I'm intereseted in.

civilised is key, and this one was. they are not always, and in those cases perhaps they ought to find another venue, but not because the topic is the war. |

OMG! I agree with Hath about something! ;)
Although, I don't know if that counts as blackmail. Someone else abandoning isn't extracting something from you or harming from you. You're well within your rights to carry on and ignore a silly "threat" like that. On the other hand, I do like Ropa. Like many Illy peaceniks, he's a nice person with generally well meaning intentions. Hard to believe he was in Night Crusaders for a bit. I suspect he joined us with the intention of talking us out of whatever war we were in at the time. He gave it a good try, but we are way too hard-headed. I certainly don't agree with his tactic of threatening to abandon to stop war talk, but I hope you will cut him a little slack. He's a good guy.

have to agree with Hath 100%...some people who don't want to talk about the war in GC seem to think they own GC and think they can dictate what can or cant be said....as far as im concerned anyone who threatens to abandon or quit because of certain talks can bloody well go ahead and quit as far as I'm concerned.

Threatening to abandon is the Internet equivalent of a kid grabbing their ball and going home to mom.
That said, GC has turned into a swamp of bad blood and lunatic accusations. Saying, "If you don't like it, leave," is the aggressive version of threatening to abandon, at least in my book. Just because nobody can stop misbehavior on the Internet, doesn't mean that these antics are mature or intelligent. Look, there is only one main chat channel in this game. Many of us play long-term because of the Illyriad community. When every single conversation gets derailed by angry people crashing in for unrelated server war trash talk (or prancey-dancey rubbish about bears), it gets frustrating for people just trying to have a normal social discussion. I've said it before, I'll say it again: the rest of us wish you guys would just shut up and fight. |
