Topic: Bumping Vans Posted: 22 Mar 2012 at 16:34 |
|
I had an interesting conversation in GC recently and many people jumped up and down and started having a fit at some things I said. Now I am hoping to get some constructive input from people and to see what the general consensus is.
The issue had to do with bumping vans. I said that if I was harvesting on a node and got bumped by someone that I would bump the person back. If that same person then came and bumped me again on the same node that I would dispatch my army to kill the vans. Now bear in mind this is all theoretical, but it is my opinion.
Looking forward to some views now.

Bumping back and forth happens all the time, starting war over it seems a bit much to me. That is my personal opinion on the matter.

Hey grag.i can understand how does it feels when someone bumps our vans but you can't go and take military action over this little problem... i know you won't realize this now.......but when you will grow bigger you will realize how foolsih is the thought of starting any kind of military action over bumping and stuff my personal advice to you is to raise your production rate as quickly as you can (you can always ask for res on gc or in your alliance) threatening to take military action against a small player(he's harvesting means he's small generally) isn't welcomed in illy and i am afraid if you will continue by what you 've said in your post you won't be making many friends here

In the newbie ring, due to the density, bumping is just a right of passage - get used to it.
Outside the newbie ring, you can handle it in many different ways.
1) Make arrangements with an active harvester to "split" resources as in not harvesting in a certain area.
2) If the player carpet bombs the area aggressive go out of your way to bump their caravans. This is especially effective if you have 2-4 times the caravans to work with.
3) Claim sov on a nearby (within 5 of your city) square the player is currently harvesting on. Sov can later be dropped if it is too costly to maintain.
Each situation is unique as every player has their own style of playing. I will usually start out with bumping back in the area immediately around my cities to see what sort of reaction I get. If there is continued bumping I will and have escalated further.
As a new player, I would suggest first resorting to diplomacy and talk with the other player or joining an alliance that can support your resource needs.

Just to clarify, I never said anything about attacking a smaller player. I rarely even harvest anymore and if I do it is close to my cities. I am also not too worried about the fickle nature of global chat and have friends in my alliance. My whole point is that outside the new zone where players know what is going on, and close to a persons own cities, a person who deliberately bumps another player constantly can expect some sort of retaliation which will escalate as mentioned by Anjire. Now I am not looking for someone to tell me what I should and should not do, I am looking for peoples opinions on how they would deal with the situation, so that I can sort through the arguments and perhaps change my view or not.

The only reason I harvest is to clear spaces for NPC spawns. So if someone else is harvesting, they are doing me a favor. To my mind, reasonably well established players who make a big deal about van bumping have too much time on their hands. If someone bumped me repeatedly, I might send them a polite mail, or I might just sigh and move on with my life.
If I were a new player who was annoyed by bumping vans, I might bump back a bit more. I would use a strategy of sending single vans to multiple nodes rather than multiple vans to a single mode, to increase the likelihood that I would actually be able to gather resources. I would also try to stick close to my own cities when harvesting and upgrade my resource fields as quickly as possible so I wouldn't have to deal with the annoyance anymore.
If I were a new player who didn't mind people bumping my vans, I'd do the same thing but also remember that others might be bothered if I bumped their vans and try to avoid doing so.

If any new players take military action to defend harvesting upon a node and become under fire both verbally or physically by the community message my in game account of Subatoi, or Eternal Fire.

Gragnog,
The only thing I might add (that I don't see above) is in the line of protection. After sending a caravan to harvest, send a small force of men to defend that caravan. If someone tries to bump you, they will end up losing their own caravan in return. However, this should be a follow up step to the diplomacy laid out by Anjire. Diplomacy first is always best.

i used to kill vans when i were actively harvesting, someone bumbed them so i bumbed back, then if it happened again i killed the vans.. Got into a private war about it because he didnt like that i killed his vans every day, so i killed all his troops and stole abit of his res at home.
