Hey folks,

I do apologize in advance for my verbosity coupled with a bit of egocentricity in creating my own thread asking to be welcomed to your community.  By way of introduction, I've already played a bit of KOC, Evony and Verdonia so I'm new but a different flavor of new.

I have dozens of questions that were not answered by your local demi-god named "The_Dude" who has an important underscore.  Should I ask these questions in chat and hope to be noticed?

This is me:

WoT seem to have fairly good idea how the game works, I would ask them.  You could ask in Global Chat, but sometimes we lie.

Ask questions anytime you see me in global chat or send me a mail in game.  I like answering questions from new players.

It wouldn't hurt to ask both here and in Global Chat.

Thanks!

Here are my first dozen questions:

1.  Best tax rate after Newbie Peas Mode but not having a bit standing army?
2.  Is there a way to defend vs Thieves?  (instead of reacting after I've been burgled)
3.  Value of the Vault...does it defend enough resources to be worth the effort?
4.  When should I start researching Sovereignty stuff?
5.  If a tree falls in the forest and my wife is nowhere around, am I still wrong?
6.  Best quantity of scouts and diplomats at the one week mark?
7.  Is harvesting resources near another person's city cause for an offense in this community?
8.  Does bumping occur most often when two people just try for the same resource at the same time?
9.  Why does my wife say "dammit Mike" when i dance like MC Hammer in mah big pants?
10.  From your experience, is the Architect Office even worth being built at all?
11.  Have any of you conquered an NPC city and was it worth the effort?
12.  Can you level up your commanders against NPC armies/cities?

1.  Increase your tax rate as your resource production increases.  I keep my tax rate at 5% until my town reaches 2-3k production of each resource per hour, then gradually raise it to support my army.

2.  Refer to the thread "basic self defense for new players" in this forum

3.  I think a level 3 vault is a good investment for a very new player.  The rationale is described further in the basic self defense post.

4.  You can't research sovereignty until you've built the warehouse.  Research sovereignty when you don't have any other available researches in City, Military, Diplomacy or Magic: Runes

5.  Yes

6.  15 basic scouts to do quests.  Thieves if you can make them. 15 advanced scouts for quests if you can afford them.

7.  Some players take offense at harvesting on their sov or within 2 squares of their city.  Most do not.  It's a good idea to send a mail first before harvesting on sov claimed by another player.

8.  Yes.  Deliberate bumping (bumper car wars) happens but is relatively rare.

9.  Look in the mirror.

10.  Usually Architects office is worth it.  There's a good thread by Quackers that shows why.  Don't build it until you're producing enough resources to sustain continuous construction.  If you instant build a lot using prestige, Architects Office might not be worth it.

11.  NPC faction hubs cannot be conquered at this time.  Factions are not yet completely live.

12.  Yes, you can fight faction armies for experience.  However, as a new player you are better off sticking to wild dogs, wolves and giant rats in the beginning.  Refer to Manannan's NPC difficulty guide for more information on relative difficulties of NPCs.

1.  Tax rate really depends on individual play style, there really is no "best" rate.

3. http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/basic-self-defense-for-new-players_topic2368.html
4. Whenever you have nothing else to research and your queue is open
5. If you have to ask, then you are wrong on two accounts
6. At the end of one week, you don't really need to have many.  But you should be thinking about building to atleast 20 of each basic and advanced scouts and 25 of each basic and advance spies.  The scouts for working on quests, the spies for working on the various discoveries/mysteries.
7. This is debatable.  If you have not moved out of the newbie area then there shouldn't be any offense taken.  Key word: shouldn't, it will always fall back onto the playstyle of the persons involved and how they interact with one another.  If you have moved out of the newbie ring, then it is more likely to cause friction especially if your harvesting style is to carpet bomb an area.
8. Yes, and in the newbie ring it is a common occurrence.
9. Screenshot or it didn't happen
10. http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/effectiveness-of-an-architects-office_topic3162.html
11. NPC's faction cities have not been fully implemented.  At the moment the 3x3 square demarcation is just a placeholder.  When they go live, I don't believe they will be conquerable.
12. Yes and no, respectively.  Yes against armies/encampments you will find in and around the map, no against NPC cities.    http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/npc-difficulty-guide_topic2378.html

Hello Human. Me helps you whit some wise words.

1.  dont worry about the tax rate at this time. worry about getting max resources production. Your village is just to small for your tax rate to matter in the "long run". In the other hand, trying to get max resources to grow at max speed, will give you more gold, more pop, more spells, more respct from the bad Orcs around you.. an army.. and so on.

2. Yes. bild thiefs use runes. if that fails.. bild more thiefs, put runes up again. still, if that fails, repeat.. no one will keep thiefing your littel village if he is losing thiefs... ( unless its an Orc doing.. them.. no no defense unless you go cry to GC like a littel elf ...)

3. No, maybe... Dunno. Well if you are being target (by thiefs).. and you cant defend.. and in the end of the day you are clean of reasources.. them.. yes .. vault will help you when you are just a littel defenseless human. after that.. you can demolish. So in the long run.. vault is no good.

4. Dunno. me dont like to read. ask an Elf. ( but i would gess a lot of other stuff more important...)

5. if theres an elf around you are screwed... he will go for all is friends and the will hunt you down. If your wife is elf too.. i am sorry for you human.

6. one week? no good. doesnt matter. this is a long run thing.  besides theres Orcs whit 5000 thiefs .. i am sure theres some elfs whit a lot of scouts too... ( elfs only attack when them know they win no matter wat.. so they spy and scout you first a lot of times!)

7. it may... if its an Orc or a dwarf. but usually, NO.

8. Yes. Or you caravan is already there, but is taking is sweet time, and my caravan is in a hurry and dont want to wait for you lasy humans to load your caravan full.. them my caravan may bump yours... but we are still friends. no worrys.

9. Just dont do it. You humans have very few tallent. live whit it.

10. well me likes it.Lets you bild a littel bit faster, and it gives good pop incrise too.. so... maybe... but theres more usefull bildings. would not bild it in all citys for sure.

11. Theres no NPC citys to conquer. But you can try to conquer elfs city when you have a bigger city whit siege engines. We all -non elfs, will tank you. ( but the other elfs and elfs lovers may not like it, and conquer your(s) city(s) in retaliation.)

12. Well.... I guess if theres few elfs in our area for you to beat on and gain experience... them yes.. NPC armies are good. start whit the dogs packs and so own. be carefull of the ogres.. they are more strong.

Have fun.

The only two really important questions...

5. Yes, yes you are.
9. Crikey.  I'd almost consider paying to watch a video of this on youtube...

PS. Welcome to Illy - you're in good hands with this bunch of people!

Best,
