Here are some things I found helpful during my newbie days. Hope they help.

1) Firstly, get all your res plots to level 3. This is boring tedious work, but it does help and gives you some good production to start with.
2) Then, get one plots of each res to level seven. This allows for the specialist res buildings, which give res bonuses. These buildings are Foundry, Kiln, Flourmill, Carpentry and Stonemason.
3) Then get one of each res plots to level twelve if you are planning on Exodusing, or level twenty if you aren't.
4) The main buildings - Library, Mage Tower, Architects Office, Storehouse and Warehouse should be levelled up very quickly. THIS IS CRUCIAL. they will benefit you greatly.
5) Do the research for Caravans and Magic. Everyoen needs these, as best they can.
6) Listen to your alliance. They may seem a little overanxious, or stupid, or wierd or whatever else...but they are good folks and will never cease to help you. They are like family...so treat them as such and they will treat you the same. If you Don't have an alliance...GET ONE!!!
7) Don't go mental...nobody likes that.
8) Don't build the vault...waste of space.
9) Get as many towns as possible very quickly...and find a space with preferably seven food plots on...and move there...away from people.

I loved my vault!
I miss my vault.  Cry
Sure, it's an inefficient use of a building square, but how many people have level 20 vaults?  I think its a collectors item.  A badge of honor.

You're inspiring an idea, now:  A "Level 20 Vault club".  I'll get working on a medal.

Hey, i decided to also include a set of goals that you should try to stick to for a good city.

1)Upgrade a res plot in between every other build: e.g. food plot, library, food plot, mage tower, iron plot and so on

2)Keep Research and mana points high, maybe upgrade these buildings twice a week.

3)Storehouse and warehouse capacity should always be on the rise, but never upgrade more than three times a week, or you will deplete your res stores. There is no point in being able to hold lots if you dont have lots...

4) Keep on top of research. Always have your research queue full so that you can continuously expand. Focus on Trade, Military, Magic and Diplomacy, as they are the most important.

5)TRADE!!! send small lots of caravans to newbies near you, get them interested and friendly, and your alliance can swoop in and recruit them.

Good advise in this thread. Since most beginner advise is of a general nature, I will add something for the budding trader.

If you head for a career as a trader:

- Do not waste time and resources on barracks and military research until you have finished your priority goals. To make any profit hunting animals you will need a bigger army than a beginner can afford and a specialized hunting weapon for your commanders.

- Your priority goals are to get warehouse and market to 20, and do the research to get 70 caravans with 3000 capacity.

As soon as your marketplace is built, you should research cotters and start building cottages. You should build many cottages early on. The cotter is a very profitable unit, especially for beginners.

- Your secondary goal is to get your library first to 7 then to 12 and to grow your commons. Livestock is also profitable to produce.

- Mage Tower is next priority. Research toward Ward of Intentions, and get the best you have researched up against thieves. There is no other attack which will hurt you unless you get into a war.

- Build thieves to further defend against thieves. Do not send them out to steal - that is an act of war and hardly ever profitable.

I am a trader, and I found hunting to be profitable when I was quite small. It only takes 60-150 axemen or stalwarts for a dwarf to poke around the forest, plains, and hill animals. If you are using multiple stalwart commanders, your casualties should be quite minimal, assuming you are hunting correctly. When I was little, I spoke up in GC, was told not to hunt by like thirty people, and then a cool big dwarf sent me some war axes. I've been converting animals into items ever since.

The comment about hunting is particularly puzzling given how easy it is to kill elementals, and all the valuable crafted items that can be made from their salts. The salts are the limiting supply on many cool items, especially earth and fire salts. I would rather have a few good stone circles to myself instead of a whole Silversteel or Arterium mine.
