Just when Nokigon thought he was doomed, that he would never see Susan again, he felt something- a barely perceptible drop in power from the force holding him. The dwarf was weakening! The effort of holding down a sorceror as powerful as Nokigon was becoming far too much. Grimly, Nokigon fought even harder until suddenly- he was free.
Quicker than thought, Nokigon leapt out of the way of the descending sword, and grabbed his own weapon. He smiled as he felt his fingers grip around the familiar hilt- his weapon had saved his life hundreds of times, and he regarded it as an old friend. He quickly gathered some of his last reserves of power, and seized six axes from around the arena. They hovered in the air, then at Nokigon's command they soared at the giant. Nokigon knew that with the dwarf weak, the skeleton would too be vulnerable, and this was his best chance of stopping it.
The axes grew in size until they were twice the height of Nokigon. They each soared for weak point on the skeleton- two struck the knee joints, another two struck the elbow joints, one struck the place where the spine meets the skull and the final axe slammed into the giant's sternum.
The giant sank to the ground, the bones sinking to the ground. The sword fell to the ground, but Nokigon barely noticed. His eyes were locked with that of the dwarf. They stared at each other, both knowing that Nokigon was more powerful. But would it be enough?
Nokigon wasn't in the mood for fancy sorcery, so he opted for a huge blast of lightning. The bolt slammed into the dwarf's shield, but the shield held. More and more lightning slammed into the dwarf's shield, but it held. Alarmed, Nokigon drew power out of his reserves stored in his sword, but he feared it wouldn't be enough.
The lightning crackled for a couple more minutes as the two tried to break the stalemate.
Then, the dwarf began to shake. Smoke slowly began to billow from him, and his eyes were wide and staring. Nokigon recognised the signs- the dwarf was exhausted, and he was using his last reserves. Suddenly, the dwarf screamed- then his body dissipated. The shield wavered, then fell, as Nokigon's lightning ripped through the cloud of dust that was all which was left of the dwarf.
Nokigon allowed the lightning to trickle to a halt. Then, exhausted, he collapsed.

Nokigon found his breath was coming in quickly, too quickly for his liking. He hated the feeling of fear, the feeling that he may soon be dead. However, in this instance the feeling was true. He was soon to be fighting in an all-out magical duel- to the death.
A dwarf leant in to his room, and nodded to Nokigon. "It's time," he said. Nokigon nodded, and walked out to the arena.
The arena was a colisseum style building, open to the air, with two pentacles inside. A pentacle was a star, sealed inside a circle. It helped sorcerors to use their powers.
Nokigon's opponent was already there. He was a stout dwarf with jet black hair, a long black beard and hard, cruel eyes. Nokigon could sense an aura of power around him. That was bad- it meant he was powerful. It meant he was dangerous. Nokigon quickly opened his eyes to the further spectrums of the magical realms (all sorcerors had an aura of magic, which betrayed their speciality of magic. They were visibile to those who knew how to look) and found himself surprised at his findings.
The dwarf's aura was black. He was a necromancer.
Necromancy was the darkest and most mysterious of all the arts. It meant drawing on the power of those dead, and even- if necessary- calling on them to rise from the ground. Nokigon had faced skeletons before, and had never enjoyed the experience. The skeletons could be imbued with varying degrees of power depending on the intention and power of the caster. In addition, there were other parts of necromancy that were even deadlier. For it took a powerful magician to control the skeleton- if their control breaks, it can have disaterous consequences. All magicians can have some profiency in all of the magical arts, but Nokigon preferred to stay away from Necromancy. It was dark and dangerous, and plus Nokigon had a view that the sorcery used by the sorceror changes the user. Necromancers were often cruel, domineering and vindictive.
The old dwarf (who Nokigon had discovered was actually called Ovrim) leant out and gave the rules, which were simple- first to be knocked out their pentacle loses. Nokigon wasn't listening, but was busy sizing up his opponent, What did he know? Powerful. Necromancer. Beyond that, not much...
"Are you ready?," Ovrim's words broke into Nokigon's trance. Nokigon nodded, and the dwarf did likewise.
"Then, BEGIN!" With those words, the pentacles shone with a bright orange light and the dwarf immediately fired a blast of fire at Nokigon. Nokigon threw up a shield, and the flames flew harmlessly around him. In retaliation, Nokigon sent a blast of lightning towards the dwarf, which slammed against the dwarf's shield.
Nokigon's eyes narrowed, and quickly sent a hail of arrows down at the dwarf. Seconds before they hit, they burst into flame, creating a huge cloud of smoke obscuring the dwarf's vision. Nokigon then sent a shower of ice spears towards the dwarf.
All of these tactics were merely ways to gauge his opponents strength and power, and so far he was impressed. Now for a serious attack.
Nokigon sent a wave of power ripping through the ground. The ground started to rip into pieces, sending an earthquake through the ground. To his surprise, he felt the dwarf fighting him. He tried, but quickly realised it would take a lot of power to beat this dwarf, and he wasn't sure he had enough. He quickly pulled back his force, and hurled a massive fireball at the dwarf, only for the dwarf to block it. Then the dwarf finally counterattacked with a huge wave of necromantic energy. Nokigon gasped as his shield held, but a wave of cold swept through him. Then, he sensed a huge wave of energy spill from the dwarf. Powerful Necromancy. Nokigon didn't like it, and sent a huge wave of varying elemental strikes at the dwarf. But then the ground shook, and a huge skeletal hand ripped out of the ground. In seconds, a huge skeleton giant holding a sword the size of a tree ripped out of the ground.
Nokigon felt his jaw drop, and he felt a huge wave of air fire from the dwarf. Taken by surprise, he was knocked over but managed to stay within the bounds of the pentacle. He saw the giant raise the sword with amazing speed. Flames rippled down the blade, and Nokigon could feel the dwarf using huge waves of power to keep him on the ground.
Was this it? he wondered. Grimly, he drew together his power to fight the dwarf, but his enemy was too strong.
Nokigon closed his eyes.
The sword descended.

Nokigon opened the door into the dwarf's chamber, and immediately spotted him lying on his bed. Nokigon sheathed the knife he had been carrying throughout the citadel, removed his spell and walked towards the bed.                                                                      Unfortunately, the knight did not spot the cunningly disguised symbols on the floor, but stepped right in the centre of it.
Quicker than it took to blink, Nokigon found himself immobilised in the centre of a blue light.
"This explaination had better be very, very good," said the old dwarf, who Nokigon sensed was actually behind him. The dwarf on the bed was an illusion. Nokigon cursed his foolishness for a moment, then began to speak.
"I wish to speak with you," Nokigon began.
The dwarf stepped out in front of him, his beady eyes narrowing.
"Oh?" he asked. "And to what do I owe this dubious pleasure, leaving aside the fact that you're supposed to be in the dungeons?"
Nokigon swallowed, aware that he was not a good enough liar to deceive this old dwarf.
So he told the truth. He told the dwarf of the fight against the Mal Motshans in the graveyards, of Belthazor's rush to gain the antidote to the poison, and of his current goal to defeat the Parvacones. When he finished, the dwarf was nodding.
"I believe you," he said. "But what makes you think that you can defeat the Parvacones?"
Nokigon attempted to raise his chin, before remembering that only his mouth could move.
"I am one of the foremost Knights in the Kingdom," he announced proudly. "I am sure that with the help of your dwarves, I can strike at the Great Mountain Home-"
He got no further, for the old dwarf's knife suddenly flashed out and pressed into his neck.
"The name is Caer Arodd, BOY!" The dwarf's eyes were black with rage. After a moment, the fire died and the dwarf removed the weapon. "I am sorry. But that was its original name, before those KOBOLDS defiled it......" Lost in his thoughts, the dwarf remained silent for a number of seconds. Nokigon waited patiently, until the dwarf seemed to come to a decision.
"This opportunity is too good to miss, but you must prove your abilities before I make this decision. I will have you tested in magic, strategy and intellect, until the final test- you will go face to face with our greatest warrior, who you have already met."
Nokigon immediately knew who he was talking about- the dwarf that sat with the old dwarf, the warrior.
"His name is Gemley. If you defeat him, then you shall be found worthy to lead our armies. If you lose...." The old dwarf grinned woflishly. "Well, that depends on the scale of your loss."
With that in mind, the old dwarf removed Nokigon from his prison and together they walked out of the chambers.

The jail walls were made of iron. Had the iron been made by any other nationality, Nokigon fancied he could have ripped the iron apart using his sorcery, escaped the cell and for good measure twisted it into the shape of his name.
But this was DWARVEN iron. He had about as much hope twisting it into a shape as a Halfling did of surviving an encounter with the Melders. Plus, he was wearing handcuffs that sapped his magical ability, after he had lost his temper at a couple of guards and lashed out. That dwarf's nose was too big anyway.
No, he would have to do better than that. And after he escaped, he would...
He would do what, exactly? He had to speak to the leaders of Clan Bealagh if he was to gain their trust. Out of these, he had to pick one of the three.
The fat one would be of no help. If he found an escaped prisoner trying to talk to him, he would call the guards. As for the warrior, if he spotted Nokigon then he would probably whip out his knife. Nokigon was partial to not being run through by viscious Dwarf warriors.
That only left the old dwarf. Nokigon sensed that the other two held him in deep regard, and he had a deep kindness inside him. That was the path to follow.
A jangling of keys interrupted his thoughts. His guard was passing the cell, and suddenly Nokigon had an idea.
He fell on the ground, and started groaning loudly.
The dwarf quickly entered the cell, and leant down. Like a flash, Nokigon jumped up, spun and kicked the dwarf in the stomach.
The dwarf sunk down, the wind knocked out of him, and Nokigon leant down and wrapped his handcuffs around the dwarf's neck.
"Open the handcuffs, or I'll break your neck," hissed Nokigon. Coughing, the dwarf reached for his keys and unlocked the handcuffs. Nokigon sighed in bliss as his magic flowed back into him. It was this that very nearly cost him his life.
The dwarf whipped out a broad bladed knife and stabbed backwards at Nokigon. The knight swayed out of the way, the knife passing by him by an inch. Nokigon pushed the dwarf forward, then leapt backwards. The two of them stared into each others eyes, until the dwarf let out a yell and dived forward. Nokigon thrust out a hand, and the dwarf ran into an invisible wall. There was an ugly SMACK, and fell down unconscious with blood pouring down his face from his nose.
Nokigon winced- he hadn't meant to hurt him that badly. Quickly he fixed the dwarf's nose, then left the cell. Grabbing his weapons as he went, he cast a spell of unnoticeability (there were two types of staying unseen- invisibility meant that you couldn't be seen, but left footprints and there was still the risk tht you bumped into someone- unnoticeability meant that although you could be seen people wouldn't notice you, no matter what you did) and made for the citadel.

Hmmm seems like most writers of these stories have been facing writers block
