I don't think that Fluffy's outcome was heavily influenced by commanders. First off, Fluffy was on attack with T2 Cav leading T1 swords. So leader divisional attack bonuses were not applicable.
Also, Fluffy attack with 662 units vs. 1926 units. Roughly a 1:3 ratio which he just eeked out a win with. But this ratio of 1:3 is about what I experience when I attacked NPC's. So I think this outcome was predicitable to be close as it was.

Good commanders. They have a HUGE effect on the outcome of battles.

I'm guessing that is shock at my statment regarding 100% health...
If your Cmdr has a battle at 100% and loses 25% health. Now he is at 75%. And lets say his health is now 75/100
In his next battle, again he loses 25% health...This time it is 75 health x 25% = 18.75...so 19 points lost ...remaining health = 56.
As long as he wins the battle, no matter his starting health, he will survive (excepting Defy Death randomness).
Battle 1 (16% damage)
|
Commander: Yeoman |
Yeoman |
1 |
Damaged for 16, 84 health remains. |
2nd battle less than 1 hour later (8% Damage):
|
Commander: Yeoman |
Yeoman |
1 |
Damaged for 7, 81 health remains. |

That would depend on how high the commander's level at death is. Bigger cmdrs take longer to resurrect.
But 100% health is not important.

I am more curious as to which would net a faster return to full health. (2 per hour base means at least 2 full days, right?)

Do the commanders recover the 99 health points faster than it would take to resurrect the commander if they had died?

I think they flipped coins at the end,... and the NPC just had bad luck. Or Fluffy really has some spell for magically influencing coins in midair
