 Topic: successful defence?

Just been attacked but the enemy troops just disappeared, with no apparent affect. I cant find any reporting, what happened??

It was a diplo mission and it was successful.

 To be specific - it was a diplo mission of either the scout or spy type, as these 2 are the only ones that do not report to the attacked player if the mission was successful. ie. If a thief, sabotage or assassination mission successfully operates against you then there's a message (otherwise we'd be flooded with petitions from people saying "My resources disappeared", "My building queue is broken" or "My commander died for no reason". We will probably change this shortly and have some sort of report to the defending player in all mission types, just so that if they were online and saw the mission approach, they don't worry that it's a game bug of some sort as opposed to "working as intended". This changed, btw - in the update a couple of days ago.
Any diplomatic mission that hits your city will generate some sort of message to you, even if it doesn't actually let you know what happened in any detail.

Are you filling in the target's city?
Are you in range to cast the offensive spell on the target city?
Do you have the required resources (cows/books) to cast the spell?

The enemy is 12 squares along and 3 down, is that a range of 15? Its close so I guess range not a prob. I have cows books wood etc in the 1000's , I have 18000 mana points, and reseached 6 offensive spells and they are showing as available,
but when I type the name of player in box, it fills in the city name box , but then both fade just back to blank??

The name fades indeed and it will sort out the offensive spells.
Just hit cast spell and prepare spell.
And its done.
