After reading through some of the suggestions to tweak military stats I came up with this idea. Armies can currently have 5 divisions, with 1 commander each. There is very little difference between sending 1 army with 5 divisions and 5 armies with 1 division each. My thoughts were to create Specialty Divisions in an army that have special properties. These special divisions would have special requirements that must be met BEFORE you can select to apply the Specialty division.
Here are some ideas:
- - Vanguard: +5% to attack, -5% to all defense. No other divisions in the army will take damage until the Vanguard is completely destroyed. Must have atleast 1 other division in the army.
- - Star General - Increase base crafted gear stats by an additional 10% (12% attack becomes 22% attack). Must have level 30 or higher General.
- - Double Star General - Increase base crafted gear stats by an additional 20% (12% attack becomes 32% attack). Must have level 60 or higher General.
- - Triple Star General - Increase base crafted gear stats by an additional 35% (12% attack becomes 47% attack). Must have level 90 or higher General.
- - Archer Phalanx - Increase all defense by 40%. Must have equal amount of spearmen and archers in the same division. (The idea is that the spearmen will surround the archer during battle, increasing their ability to defend against cavalry.)
- - Spartan Phalanx - Increase cavalry defense by 25%. Can only have spearmen in a division. Must have a number of spearmen that is divisible by 300. (works great on the first hit, but as soon as you loose some troops the stat bonus goes away).
- - Sniper Division - +20% to attack. Can only have archers, and a max size of 1000.
- - Savage Combat - +20% to all stats. Only Infantry. No troops can be wearing any gear. Commander must be below level 30. Must have over 1,000 troops.
- - Horde - +50% to attack. Spearmen only. Must have over 10,000 troops.
- - Flanking time - +15% to attack. Cavalry only. Must have another division in the army containing equal to or more infantry. (Anyone else seen Braveheart?)

So with these strategic divisions the math behind predicting battle outcomes would become much more variable. Depending on how you opponent has structured his armies divisions could depend on if you will win or loose.
Part of gameplay would be figuring out the best way to use strategic divisions. An example:
- To better defend against cavalry should I build archers and spearmen to benefit from the archer phalanx division? Or should I use the Spartan Phalanx division combined with a Vanguard division.
- Vanguard would absorb all of the deaths from combat so as to keep the Spartan Phalanx active.
- The Vanguard + Spartan P. would give me a 20% to defend against anything.
- The Archer Phalanx gives me 40% defense against cavalry, but I need to have an equal number of archers and spearmen.
All of a sudden it becomes viable to have different types of troops in the same city. Different strategies would be created around the efficiencies of each strategic division. I am sure some balancing needs to be done on numbers, but you get the general idea.
