Just on a need to know basis... this 1 vs 1, was it consensual?

To each their own style of game play is for all, wherever is for all. But yes there are marked territories denoted in BL where you have come under authority of an alliance. If you take your spot, defend it, claim it for all of the game (10sq, 8sq.. whatever distance) as an alliance then that alliance has its own rules. In this instance, as far as I know, I could move to Newlands without asking ANYONE. Only if I wanted to move shorter in distance than the norm so called 10sq to contact the neighbor, which in Elgea is done time and time again with no problems.

more accurately, the game has functioned for years on negotiation. the 10-square rule was a part of that. so was threat of military action, and, occasionally, actual war. when things could be kept from coming to that, it was not because we had a robust set of rules to follow; it was because personal relationships that often transcended the alliances were brought to bear, and alliance leaders had clout enough within their own organisations to make agreements and see them followed rather than being compelled into crisis by a dogmatic adherence to a moral ideal.

did you play this game before the 10-square rule, or prior to crafting? i realise it's become the fashion among player of a certain opinion to impart to the 10-square rule the force of natural law; i'd like to understand if that's a considered position or simply the effect of never having seen the game function in another way. i assure you we did quite well prior to H?'s announcement (which was decried by most at the time as a naked land grab). there were multiple ways for alliances to signal their settlement intentions, the emphasis being on communication rather than some vague idea of "rights".
