Well there really isn't another way, the object of a siege (in the game and back a long time ago in RL) was to either destroy or capture a town, but I agree the should be another way, maybe an option to pillage a town when you siege it and if it successful you destroy most of the towns buildings and take most/all of the towns resources (or depending on the armies carrying capacity

That way the player wont be completely wiped out and they will have at least a chance to rebuild.

I agree, the current siege mechanics hinders active warfare. The price is just too high, people don't want to fight as long as they can be wiped out completely.
