If you make plate armor, it is assumed you make a shield as well. All units with plate on have better archer defense, because they have a shield. Just look at the +2 defense Halberdiers get.
I am not amused.

Except dat it vould still only make sense for infantry to hef shields!

And henyvays, cav are barely penalized by forests, and men at arms are not. and if hyu are defendink vit cav and men at harms, hyu deserve vot hyu get.

yeah but my cavalry and men at arms would also  be hurt by the forest.
 
that's something that could be done instead of actually having the shields. Make a research thing that allows your troops to have shields and more advanced shields so that they can have a better defense

Hyu defended on a mountain vs. Trueshots? Haha! Joke is on hyu. Forest vould hef been better choice - the honly place vere archers are pretty terrible.

Hi still tink dat addink shields is stupidly unneccesary mechanic. Rather dan makink tinks needlessly complicated, vhy not just buff infantry so dey can hactually fill dere niche a little better?

True, but he was surrounded by mountains and a forest so i thoght the mountain would work better.

Sorry about that the wooden shields would be put above the leather shields and the light iron would be made with some wood, so it's light

Lucky you i got 900 troops destroyed by less than 400 trueshotsOuch, when i sieged a place and had to give up that siege.

That's what the shields would be for increasing defense against arrows mainly.
