At present the alliance i am with is currently having the same problems, and not sure if it is a ploy to get a reaction from our alliance. Its fair enough that you have concerns about this sort of thing.
Its polite and fair player gaming to make contact with a person whos area that your are moving into and within a several sq's of the players city. I still contact those whos area i am moving into and will continue to do so out of respect and common courtesy. Rather have friendly neighbors then one im constantly at wars with What i wouldnt agree with is, if an alliance has moved into an area that has or was already being occupied by another alliance and expected the 10 sq thing from the alliance who was already there first. |

I have avoided this thread for numerous reasons - but today thought I might peek.
Mostly, I am seeing circular arguments - so I would like to direct you to a quote from page 6.

matiez, you can have production only on 20 sovereign squares. Just two rounds of tiles around your towns will add up to 24 squares (8 immediate squares touching your city and the 16 around them). Additional sovereignty squares come at very high costs without any particular use. That said, I do not have any problems with H wanting new neighbors to contact them first. |

It doesn't make any game sense to move within 10 of someone. If you do, you are only hurting yourself. By moving in closer than 10 squares, you get less sov to claim. The "10 square rule" is not about territory or alliance claims. It's about the production of your city. Settling closer than 10 squares is about as equivelant as settling a 3 food plot. You can do it, but you'd be better off finding somewhere else to go.
The extreme hard cut off would have to be 7 squares. Any closer than that and it's only a matter of time for hostilities to break out. Between 7 and 10 you could probably work something out, but someone is losing at least 3 sov squares. This discussion should be about the game effects of moving within 10 squares. That's the true underlying issue that everyone seems to be avoiding. |

Getting back to settlement proximity thing, the Chancery mechanism has been discussed, and I agree that this is the obvious intended in- game mechanism to make land claims, but that is still only an individual option, and one that wouldn't be available to many players very quickly...
As far as for an alliance, I think public posting of their exclusion zone is enough to ask for. The announcement of it does not force any one to comply, it just makes them aware that actions may have consequences. I don't see that is inherently unfair. I realize you can make the argument that a top alliance, by virtue of that very status, may be the only reason any one honors it, but that is just a reflection of reality. I think it will be interesting to see what develops if increasing numbers of alliances make the decision to post settlement policies. |
