@bartimeus, when a caravan is destroyed, you merely get a notification that it was destroyed.  You don't know by who unless you see the army and follow it back to its town.

@ethelion: dont we already get a full report when caravan gets interupted/destroyed?

Also, +1 to Gods idea. Currently to do that, you have to send your army to occupy the tile, then send the caravans. but when pathfinding and ambush comes up, We will need escort...
(PS, but why would we need a scout to get a battle report? dont we already get a report after a battle?)

how about we can send an army with the caravans or mercenaries to protect the caravans from harm. the scouts could also be used to report on the battle as well. so not a bad idea.

I think it would be useful and sensible within the context of the game to be able to attach scouting units to a group of caravans.  The scout would tag along and watch from afar.  If anything happened to the caravans (interupted/destroyed), the scout would return with a full report.
