As I see it, on paper the biggest threat to a player's well-being in this game is for a player to come along and siege down their cities- much like what happens in less new-player friendly games, such as Travian or Grepolis. Another threat ould be for someone to use you as a 'farm' for your resources, so that they can get lots of nice basic res so that they can grow even more enormous or to get a little bit of experience for their commander by defeating your dozen men- not to mention the fact that this can help them to pacify the local area.
In reality, this is different. The biggest, and most serious, danger to a new player was thieves, and that could be dealt with by joining an alliance and trying to follow the thieves when they get back. Even then, they were a nuisance rather than a serious threat. And now with the diplo reinforcement strategy, thieves are even less of a danger. A new player, or even an established player, only really has to fear war if he makes a nuisance of himself. Even in war most alliances will ignore the players that aren't attacking them and will attack the ones that become a threat. Even blights can be stopped by having a 'spell shield' of a powerful blight. Overall, life in the game is very sleepy an there are very few threats to the well-being of a player. In my opinion, this is a bad thing. I play to entertain myself, and I've for a long time thought of a way which could solve this.
If the game is to be believed, as things stand then the citizens of Illyriad, our 'population' are the most law-abiding people in the history of the world. Not one murder, riot, theft, fight- there is something WRONG with these people. And to be honest- it's not realistic. Throughout history riots and rebellions have happened. Heck, look at the London riots last year- without getting into the politics of the lot. The people do not sit happily at home all the time, unprotesting. So, I propose a new system.
Each city should have a happiness rating. Happiness increases with low taxes, long periods of peace, proximity to your capital city and also to Centrum (would you be happy in the Wastes? Really?), the amount of troops in your home town (although this isn't so much happiness as 'forced happiness'- or in other words, repression, although you also feel safer with 5000 troops guarding you) and so on. Happiness decreases with high taxes, low resource levels in the home town and so on. When happiness gets to a very low extent, then your townspeople will start to riot. This means that some of your men will be killed, you'll lose a bit of population to show your townspeople being killed in riots, a couple of your buildings will get destroyed. And if you don't do things about it- send in some reinforcements, lower taxes etc- the riot will turn into a rebellion. The rebellion could take a number of forms- a large group of your citizens leaving your town and either fleeing to other places or forming an army, or even taking the town. As you can imagine, it adds an extra, rather interesting element to the game.
But if we're going to have this then we HAVE to have a bit of PvP in there. With this change, it could also pave the way for a new type of diplomat, one that infiltrates a town and lowers the town's happiness. If this happens then the town could even join the diplomat's owner.

I think that this has a lot of potential to work. What do you guys think?
