*puts down a leg of mammoth steak* i'll have you know that being surrounded by GM mammoths is terrible!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to welcome my two o'clock tour-group.

Hush, gentle ThunderClap - do not let the Evildoers know of our innermost secrets!

The Forbidden Knowledge is not for the likes of them.

For do they not already fear the Marauding Hordes of Vengeful Mammoths?  Must we make further examples of them, with their Wrongfulness and their Wilful Thoughts?

Say it isn't so, I beg of you.

Careful now Wuzzel, we have other creatures; and the spiders know the blockade tech...

They will weave your town in their silken webs; catching all your caravans like flies in a very dangerous web

I'm taking this as "user error"...

Am I wrong and I need to use a Embarrassed smiley?

Or am I right, and I need to use a Big smile smiley instead?

It's a great big unknown tbh.

Oh, alright then:

THE LONG ANSWER:
Every 6 hours the server:
  • Looks at the current distribution of new players and says "this is the generally the boundary of the map as regards population density"
  • It then asks "How many NPC (ie resourceable) squares do I have within this population density?"
  • It then generates a random number of how many "resourcable squares" it thinks there should be there, based on a secret formula which GM ThunderClap might possibly give up if you make his life extremely miserable (this last fact may or may not be true, but it's worth a try from my perspective)
  • It then compares the "weighted" random number of resource squares it has come up with against the number of squares that still have resources on them post-harvesting by the playerbase
  • If the random number it has come up with is less than the number of squares that still have resources on them, then it generates more resource points to attempt to fill the gap

THE TL;DR ANSWER
It's pretty random, and every 6 hours the server may or may not add resources around the map squares.
