If you are like me and don't trust yourself not to mess up urls, you can also click the red arrows on the side of the mini-map to move the target location. This is a good thing about elementals spawning on standing stones: The fact that it's a standing stones square as the "target" confirms for me I have the right square.
Here is my step-by-step guide to elemental hunting:
1) send out cav army to kill elementals, since they are standing on the plains. I usually set to occupy for 24 hours to allow time for my skinners to work.
2) send out skinners (I am optimistic and send 10-15) to pick up the goods
3) send out t2 scouts
4) send out t1 scouts
Your units will arrive in this order:
1) t2 scouts -- this tells you if someone is already on the square in which case you can send them a quick "get outta the way!" message, saving your army and theirs from grief
2) army, killing and leaving salts
3) t1 scouts to tell you whether you sent enough skinners
4) skinners
Once you receive the t1 scout report with the count of salts, if it's been more than 2 hours since you launched the first set of skinners, you can send any additional skinners needed to pick up extra salts.
This is predicated on the elemental being 4 hours or more away for your army, which happens fairly often in the barren north where nothing lives but the dragons. (And we can't see those yet.)
Edited: This is based on the relative speed of human units, I think it would work for the other races as well, but I'm not as familiar with their relative movement speeds.
