I have a question for the developers.  When boats/ships are implemented, how will port towns need to be situated in relation to a body of water in order to build a port?  Will they have to be flush with the body of water (side touching side) or is it sufficient that a corner of the town is touching the body of water?  I realize this may not have been decided yet and may be subject to change even if it has, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask.  Thanks!

Drevik - When the time comes you will be able to dig canals through sovereignty squares etc to gain access to river and sea. So you can place your town anywhere in up to a few squares from the coastline/riverside.
It is however a project that has been scheduled for sometime next year, and until then the developers stay focused at the task imminently ahead, so you may wait a while to get an answer.

Play Illy as it is presently...not how it might be sometime in the future.  Trust me...this will greatly improve your game enjoyment.  :)

Many, many, many players are often moving cities to take advantage of new game elements, etc.  So, it's not like every decision you make is carved in stone and you can't adapt in the future.  Think of your cities as living beings capable of evolution as the environment changes.  :)

Although I would repeat what TD said, I do believe it has been said that diagonal access to water is sufficient without requiring the digging of canals.

Yes, it is anticipated (although not set in stone... nothing is until it's released) that adjacent access (8 squares around the city) will be sufficient to grant water access.  And yes, it's also anticipated that canal digging can link cities to the water network.

Finally, yes, wise people in-thread are pointing out that it's not a 2011 project, and "live for today" is a great motto given the ever-shifting sands of prioritisation in the development-desert.

'development-desert'?

How about 'the tangled vines of the development-jungle'?

Desert sounds a bit... barren. ^^

Okay, so at least one of the 8 surrounding squares that touch your city needs to be water to allow a port. But what if I simply wanted to build a bridge over the water? Will the bridge be a sovereign structure or what?

Thank you.
