I know to increase your population is to level up buildings. But, is it directly related (say, when the food consumes goes from 3 to 7, does my population increase by four) or is it just gradually increased when you upgrade them?

yup! illyriad commoners seem to have a very high birth rate-with a gestation of 0 seconds. they just have them when they need them

sometimes they give birth while walking and all. grose stuff, dont want to know
