i was just pondering of all things players names and i was intrigued by the names some people go by. there is a myriad of names ranging from game references and books tv shows and music to the strange the inexplicable the funny and the downright preposterous.each of them must have been chosen for some reason or the other. whether the player thought that was the name that best suited them or they wanted to pay homage to some part of their life or they wanted to show their appreciation for some group person ecetera or they just thought it was a funny name.well whatever the reason you chose your name i want to hear the story so feel free to tell it no matter how weird or strange.i dont judge and all are welcome

Nice idea for a thread, I've often wondered at some of these names myself!
I'll go first then (with both sides of my account), fairly obvious relations both.
- King Sigurd
Hero from Norse Mythology. Slays Fafnir (in the form of a Dragon, bathes in his blood, and eats his heart). And no, I don't know why "King Sigurd of Illyriad" is an Elf either.
I've always been a big fan of the Norse Myths & Legends, and Sigurd also has the gift of "talking to birds", which as a fantasy game designer and writer comes in handy by way of neutralising the occasional social toxicity
- Stormcrow
A nod to LOTR - Gandalf's occasional epithet, as described on wikipedia as "a reference to his arrival being associated
with times of trouble, often used by his detractors to mean he was a troublesome meddler in the affairs of others."
Which is a fairly accurate description of my job here. Best,
SC

When I was around 11 or 12 I was standing in our living room with a friend, randomly flipping pages through an old spanish dictionary i'd found in a drawer.
Eventually we landed on "Diablito" spanish for little devil. Being rather short, my friend immidately exclaimed "That's you!"
It rather stuck, and since then, online I have been El Diablito, the little devil. Why of course, I can't imagine, i'm such a nice, giving and charming chap, just one of those childhood accidents with no basis in reality.

Well since my character is a human and obviously a noble since he rules a town (and son to be towns) without restraint, I decided to make him a Duke - the highest ranking noblemen, just below royalty. The name of the duchy, viz. Felirae, comes from a game I play - in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn there is a character called Ludveck, who is the Duke of Felirae. So rather liking the way Duke Felirae sounds and seeing as it worked with the concept I had for my character, I used it.

For those who don't know:
Shrapnel - n. Fragments from an exploded artillery shell, mine, or bomb.
Shrapnel is also the name of one of the Insecticons from the Transformers of the 80s. When I was a kid, Transformers were my favorite and Shrapnel was my very first Transformer. I also used it as a call sign in various BattleTech games when I was in the Air Force as a armament systems specialist (bomb loading and weapons maintenance). I adopted it as my online name.
It's a stretch, but it vaguely applies to my favorite AD&D character, a dwarven battle rager who use specially created sharp edged armor to shread their enemies to a pulp kind of like what shrapnel does.

KillerPoodle is a family in joke about attack dogs and about how strong full size poodles actually are despite their fluffy appearance.

Honored_Mule came out of an (American) random nick generator and I hate underscores outside your standard conventions for constants in C-like programming languages. The referenced character is from Asimov's Foundation Series, with the Honored Mule being the enemy of the Second Foundation. I think he's some form of powerful CEO or something, but basically he is someone able to disrupt the mathematically predicted rebirth of civilization.
More importantly, for over a decade this name has never been taken by anyone else, anywhere I've needed an account...not even in some near derivative form. Thus my online identity has been consistent, cohesive, and my login ids easy to remember.

Arbiter is latin for 'judge', the first time I used it was when I ran out of names for my WoW Blood Elf Paladin.. Yes, I have played WoW. Somehow 'judge' just fit my hammerdin darn well. Not to mention 'Fury' was taken.. (Had a lv99 Paladin named Fury on the Diablo 2 HC ladders) I also had Rehtori the Hunter, Lurkki the Death Knight, Incendia the Fire Mage and Verdict the Rogue in WoW - Only Arbiter and Rehtori got past 70.. Arb was the only one at 80.

I choose Bartimeus because of a book I read in my youngth. It is called "the bartimeus trilogie" and the author (Jonathan Stroud) is juste amazingly funny. Bartimeus is a medium level Djin who can change appearance at will, and has lived for a few thousand years so far. In this world, the magicians have taken over the government for quite some time. those have no magical power, but know how to summon and bind a demon (foliot, djin, afrit) to their will. But bartimeus has got much wits and tries his best to always misinterpret his orders. (for example, if you order him to make sure someone never hurts you, he will most likely think killing you himself is the best way to achieve this) His appropriate uses of small notes on the bottom of pages makes the book unusual and very pleasant.
edit; I also called my rabbit "bartimeus"

Dogbert - it is so plain it's dull.
i always loved the character and the comics. i've even used to be an active reader of the blog (before my daughter came around)
whenever i have to write a nick it's either Foamy, Squirrely Wrath, Zen Of Anger, or plain Dogbert.
i never played online games, and at first i thought i would not last here a week. so i did not care for the name. now i'm definetly would have chosen something more interesting.
my second acount, long gone, was in fact Foamy.
i also had a third, Elfbert (which further proves how uncreative i can get), before i knew it was illegal and stopped using it.

some random guy is a great name to confuse someone with. for instance, "some random guy is a b*st*rd" says bob. "what random guy?" fred respondes. "some random guy!" bob exclaims. this leads to an abbot and costello type situation that can go on for an indefinite period. this works to my advantage in this type of game, when people are having their abbot and costello conversations, I'm either letting my armies sneak away into the shadows, or I'm adding to the confusion by razing the opposition's cities into oblivion. "fred sits among the rubble of his ruined city. " oh! that some random guy!" he says, seconds before passing out."
some random gal is the same thing.

Tordenkaffen - translates in english to Thundercoffey.
It was the name of a four man band I saw almost 10 years ago in a small liquor hole in Denmark - they were excellent, the woman pianist played keyboards with both fingers and toes which sorta caught my attention, only time Ive ever seen that done.
Ive used the nick in virtually every online game Ive played over the last 10 years, partly because of the great band experience, partly because I LOVE coffey, and partly because it (between danes) sends a subtle hint to the norse god of thunder Thor, which in itself would just be ducky to call yourself.

Mr Damage, whilst obviously being appropriate for a war type game, comes from the name of a song. The story behind the song is that the band member who wrote it,one night on stage he noticed a tattoo covered punk going completely off his head whilst headbanging to the music. This guy went so hard he actually smashed his head open without realising it and proceeded to leak blood everywhere(yes we are going back a long time ago). So after the concert the songwriter said to his band mates "Did anyone see Mr Damage out there tonight". If you're not Australian you won't know the band but all I can say is checkout "Marseilles" 1979 New years eve on youtube (watch towards the end for the lead to hit the ground),fantastic band,as good as ACDC, just didn't get the kudos.
