Right now, battles seem to be resolved from one single roll, with the result that one side is completely destroyed. This is a bit... odd, in some ways. If battles were broken up into multiple parts, this could be a potential way to make Raid useful. Basically, when Raiding, you would only do the first round before moving on to the gathering resources stage. A large enough army could still do enough damage to the raiding party in one round to destroy them.
I'd propose the following changes: Standard battles last 3 "rounds" with some similiar system to whats used now, but where one side isn't guaranteed to be destroyed. If the attackers haven't won by the last round, they are repulsed and sent home. Raids last 1 "round" and then move right to resource collection. You can also use a commander skill that increases the number of rounds an army is willing to fight when attacking or something.
Anyways, just an idea.

Yeah I like this idea, but rather than making it a set number of rounds (apart from raid) make it a chance of calling of the attack after each round Ie retreat chance = round no.^2*(1+(attacker losses)/(defender losses))-commander moral factor*attackers/defenders. The chances of calling of the attack should be
Logarithmic with round number but should also certainly also be bassed on losses V.s. kills and dependent on how many troops the defender has left. (they're not going to leave if there's 100 attackers left but 1 defender)

actually it'd also be pretty cool if we started getting inacurate combat reports that could be out by a maximum based on the % of troops that return Ie if 10% return then the remaining enemy forces are reported as somewhere between the real no of enemy troops remaining to say 80% more. where as if 20% return then there can only be say 40% more reported.
