I would like to request that the tournament squares be reintroduced so that we can have permanent areas where the diplomatic rules are suspended. This will allow we, the players, to run our own tournaments. I would also like some tournament squares be added to BL. As Stormcrow said "Fundamentally, we want player-run tournaments to take hold and succeed. That's absolutely not to say we won't do tournaments ourselves in the future. But it's important that the tools we've handed out get used, and used well - and as far as we can see, they are!" IMO, King of the Hill style tournaments are well liked and having the tournament squares introduced would make things a lot easier since alliances won't have to cancel NAP and ConFed agreements in order to participate. I know ubluntu had plans to write code for a King of the Hill tournament and I also had planned on doing on in May for NF awareness month with help from another coder.

I oppose this because it would require the devs to actually do something, and we all know they're far too busy to do that. Wouldn't want to distract them with petty things like engaging and retaining players.

I think players would have run tournaments already, if the last few pieces were in place. Specifically, the ability to suspend NAP/confed on a square, the ability to track occupants continuously and completely (vs just voluntary API submission), and the built-in ability to present real time competitive rankings during the tournament.

This is a great idea, but to be honest I would not be interested in wasting my troops and time with player run tournaments. The main interest in tournaments was being able to see the progess, kills, and daily ranking on the tournament page. The prizes are also an issue. Items like the soul forged blades, bone dragons, ancient warriors, and lately the medals were what made tournaments fun. The developers have basically abandoned this game now and such is the way of things.
Makiing those squares available to everyone will enable small scale player run events which is a good thing.

nCrow is running tests to determine whether the squares from the elemental tournament still ignore all confed/NAP/alliance and other diplomacy.
In my opinion these squares are not as fun to use for tournaments because they can only be occupied by one individual (and possibly even one town) at a time. This decreases (but does not eliminate) the potential for cooperative play that is part of what makes tournaments fun. I suppose this could also have the advantage of making it more possible for smaller players to compete, since the most that could sit on a tournament is armies from one city.
Still, I welcome any tournament, player-run or otherwise.

The last time we checked the elemental squares, they were just ordinary squares.

Hmm ... Liking this idea, especially if some squares were included in BL. Almost 2 days and 3 pages of (mostly) positive comments from Players'n'Payers but nothing from the Devs

So far it appears that armies from the same alliance on such a square will NOT fight each other (as they did in the original tournament). Probably this means that all rules of diplomacy apply, but I am working on getting one of our NAPs or confeds to test this.

BRING THE SQUARES BACK!! It helps us all equally across the maps!! Do some in BL, as many have not experienced tournaments that moved there!\
Because you have the "know-how" to make it equally fair for all.. yes you do, to place them!
MAYBE we could ask Ubluntu or Kubluntu *if we get no response.... to map it out for us and make the marks.... whaddaya think?
post edit: Just saw Rill's post of testing squares... GL and THANKS!

TRUTH... I was there to read it first hand in GC!! The only requirement was that any tourney planned was open to ALL players of Illyriad. So make sure to write GM RIKOO, or GM Stormcrow to belly up to the table!!

I have confirmed that the elemental tournament squares ignore NAP and confed but count alliance members as allied. Today in global chat Stormcrow said that they will be making tournament squares in each region of Elgea and Broken Lands that abide by these rules: 1) they will have a distinctive appearance so people can identify them, 2) alliance mates and own forces will be treated as allies and not fight, 3) all other diplomacy such as NAP and confed will be disregarded and will fight. This should be in time for koda's tournament.

[05:09]< Kodabear> so SC will you guys be able to the reintroduced by May, 17 (NF awareness day)05:11]< GM Stormcrow> One question on 'permanent' tournament squares for you guys... [05:14]< kubluntu> (alliance based=ignore confed/NAP) [05:15]< GM Stormcrow> Yes, kubluntu. Alliance-based means ignore Confed & NAP, but treat selfsame and alliance as friendly [05:18]< KillerPoodle> +1 on respecting alliances and ignoring naps/confeds [05:20]< GM Stormcrow> @KP - Yes; my current plan is to a) visibly mark tournament squares as such, b) suspend NAPs and Confeds on these squares (but leave alliance in force), and c) extend a single regional tournie square into BL [05:20]< Rill> SC, when kodabear puts on his tournament, do you have any concerns about server load if we all hit a tournament square at the same time? [05:20]< Aelfwine> Wait, one square for all of the Broken Lands? [05:20]< GM Stormcrow> @Aelfwine - 1 per region [05:21]< Aelfwine> So, one for The Long White, one for Jurgor, etc.? [05:21]< GM Stormcrow> @Koda - Perhaps. It really could be a number of things, but it does seem very specific to you and your special snow-bear-flakeness, I'm afraid. 05:23]< GM Stormcrow> @Rill - no, not really. The server might take some time to process things if they all occur simultaneously; but it does process them linearly, in the order in which they should have occurred. So it all works out right in the end, even if the 'timing' seems off by a few seconds here and there. [05:24]< kubluntu> Rill, afaik that has not happened since and we have had far larger numbers involved since [05:24]< GM Stormcrow> @kublu - I've not really spent much time looking at it tbh; 10 mins sounds super-fine to me. We do throttle connections if they're hitting things hard by default; but that's only in the seconds realm, not minutes. [05:38]< Kodabear> well SC the Tournament sq for elgea be the same as the last Tournament sq? or would they be different [05:40]< GM Stormcrow> @Koda - the elgea tournie squares are set as the near-mid-points for each region. The BL ones will be the same. [05:42]< Kodabear> SC is there anyway we could have a list of all the Tournament so coder will have time to be able to make there programs? [05:44]< GM Stormcrow> @Koda - once the algorithm has settled on the squares, we'll publish a list. The plan is also to create an XML list for import.

I would really love a possibilty for a distinction by API-key, so players in small alliances can join in with others and still be in their alliance.
HUGcr has a few members, including myself, who love tournaments but who cannot make a fist against bigger alliances. Having those join in with another team without having to leave their alliance would be a solution there. I am sure we are not alone in this.
Do it on alliance basis, so for example HUGcr could join nCrow or mCrow in this.

Are alliance API's possible? Something the superusers have access to, that doesn't break it down into member level detail, but to help with tourneys?

Sorry Solanar, but API Keys are strictly per-account.
What CK describes is unlikely as it breaks the premise of Peace-of-Camp rules being same-alliance-only as was the previous behavior(last official tourney).
