Hi all,

Effective immediately:

COMBAT REPORTS
Combat reports from NPC combat will no longer simply read "Combat Report" in the in-game-mail (igm) subject line, instead it will now contain more meaningful information such as:

Victorious defense by GM Stormcrow's forces at Stormont under attack by Azure Throne (NPCs)'s forces from Location: [587|-2898] in Calumnex

FACTION LINKS
Factions can now be link-identified using the ingame parsing script in the following format:

[@f=N]

... where N should be replaced by the FactionID for the faction.

For example, [@f=1] will produce a link labelled "Council of Illyria" which will link via a pop-up to the Faction Page for that specific faction.

FACTION AI CHANGES/UPDATES
  1. Faction aggression has been significantly increased, and further 'hate' factions have been activated (so it's not just The Tower any longer!).

  2. Deliberate Faction Interaction will now occur from the following factions:
    • The Tower
    • The Melders
    • The Lost Clans
    • The Houergerrt
    • Sirens
    • Tenaril
    • Drek-Hhakral
    • Free Orcs
    • Guul-Hai

  3. Faction AI action options have been increased from their current (fairly single-minded, simple) attack style to include further tactical options and a more complex decisioning engine.
NOTIFICATIONS FOR DEFENDERS
Players defending in a town or on a square now get a notification when hostile units arrive at that location.  The format is:

[Attacking Player]'s army arrives at [Defending Town/Square]

This notification appears ingame, and in the notifications XML feed (as type 42 "Unit Army Arrives").

Enjoy,

SC

This is a promising development. Is there a possibility that the faction armies will also increase in size?

in hindsight, it probably wasn't a good idea to place a dwarven city right next to a free orcs hub...

a question: how are the faction units of The Melders, Giantkin, Dragonkin, .etc, going to spawn if the faction itself have no hubs?

can we begin to influence these other factions in any way ie change upwards and downwards the faction standings?

Hi everyone,

Quick update and a minor display bugfix.

A couple of players who have been attacked by factions have had the ingame combat report message erroneously report the wrong faction attacking (in a few instances saying eg "attacked by forces from Council of Illyria"; although then the unit composition of the force is clearly not from the Council of Illyria!)

This has been rectified, and the attacking faction will now be correctly identified.

We have also altered the "faction troops from Location" to refer back to the faction army's start point (eg a hub or spawn point) rather than to refer to the last location the faction was present at.

Regards,

SC

so, time to waken up Audrey once more, and sort out the crafting discoveries…

I had a Houergerrt army attack my city. Is this intended? Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anywhere where this functionality has been activated yet.

He said that AI complexity had been moved up a level, and that the aggressive factions might make more deliberate target choices.

"Military units belonging to Drek-Hhakral from Hub: Madh-Vraken-Kalj at [9|-2842] in The Orken Coast inbound to Hyrdmoth's [HORDE] town Theb-Madh-Broc with Hostile intentions."

They're supposed to be friendly with me...

Maybe they are not friendly with your alliance as a whole?

They should be friendly with an alliance full of smelly Orc's

Our alliance is at plus 33 and I'm at plus 40, so there must be a bug.

Exciting times!

Maybe they are reinforcing? There are times when your own messengers and incoming troops show up as unknown hostile incoming.

I thought that might be the case, but when they arrived a battle was fought.

Another possibility is that it is because I sieged an Orc town nearby (abandoned alliance member) and it might be revenge for that.

Can you post a battle report?

Two opposing forces clash against each other.
Swordsmen, and especially cavalry, find attacking into very mountainous terrain difficult - although ranged units can excel.

Narrow passes and gulleys hinder any mounted units' ability to defend adequately. Nimble spear units have no such worries here, and defending bowmen are able to use their height advantage to maximum effect.

I think they already have, Brand. Here's a report I got from Omen troops attacking a city (additional attacks of similar size have come since).

Victorious defense by my forces at home under attack by The Tower (NPCs)'s forces from Hub: Omen here in Calumnex

Two opposing forces clash against each other.

Large hills such as this are difficult for attacking mounted units, but provide opportunities for ranged to unit to show their worth. Arms-bearing footsoldiers take it all in their stride, of course.

Manueverability and lines of sight are the keys to defending very hilly terrain. Lightly armoured units such as spearmen and ranged units find it easy going here.

Had you otherwise interacted with the faction prior to that, perhaps by attacking their camps? Just curious if something triggered the attack.

I haven't attacked any of the faction troops, though other members of my alliance have.

The one thing I have done recently is to siege and capture an Orc town right next to the faction hub (this was a town of a player who had been in our alliance who had gone inactive). Since our alliance has some non-Orc members our alliance standing with the faction is lower than the Orc default, so it's just about plausible that it was some sort of revenge attack for that.

I think it's more likely that there's a bug in the code though... (I've written code, I know what it's like)

There is no bug that faction hates everyone, also devs said they upped aggression up a notch that might mean that factions will start attacking towns as well as encampments.

Actually, that Orc faction only hates non-Orcs.

My personal standings with the tower is at -95, pretty sure I have green buttocks.

The Tower isn't an Orc faction. I was referring to the Orcs that attacked Hyrdmoth, even though he is an Orc and should have a favorable standing with them.

My bad, you are right I thought you were referring to the other battle report.

One of my cities got attacked by a friendly orc faction (Free Orcs) in Farshards last night.
My standing with them is +20 and I trade through that hub.  Details here
