Here is a thread for those who are in the area around omen and what troops attack you, so we can have some idea and some plans for how to protect against the AI. We might be able to get some insight by sharing information on them.

this forum topic is a prime example of why the devs need to control factions...within weeks players are going to learn how to manipulate factions if their behavior is control by code...they need to be unpredictable....please don't fall into the laughable AI trap...constantly change faction behavior by having human control and free up coding efforts to add and improve other parts of the game

spy reports and ai code seem to be two completely different things.

Maybe the AI is smart enough to learn how to manipulate players. Making us spend all our money on prestige.

The largest shadow mages group I've seen so far was 549-strong (a division of 374 and one of 150). They seem to range roughly between the "pack" size and the "throng" size.

The groups spawning from Omen seemed to be smaller after you had repeatedly attacked and destroyed the previous groups (it's my impression and comes from my experience but I don't pretend it's based on meticulous research).

Also you usually have three or more Tower groups about at the same time. Most are not very far from their hub, but sometimes some move farther than usual.

Well I guess we'll find out more soon .... less than 12hrs until we could see The Tower forces coming out to play  Cool

Gonna be really interesting to see how this all plays out, especially once these actions spread to all factions and Faction Standings can start to be influenced.

I saw that someone, or someones, set up some encampments around one of the hatred faction hubs.  I guess they want to see what it is like to get hit?  Is this happening with the Tower/Omen?

Yes, apart from the mines close to The Tower there are 3 player camps (one belonging to my alt)

Well we're a few hours in and no attacks that I know of, at least not on my camp nr The Tower.

I did see some faction troops leaving The Tower this morning, heading S.E.
They ignored 2 camps, 2 towns on their way to occupy an 'Ancient Graveyard'/Clay spot 28sq S.E. from their hub

Still waiting for that first hit!

Wondering if the initial actions will only be triggered by new camps that landed after the change in faction behaviour.  So I've sent another army to occupy this spot just to see:

I wonder how intellegent factions really are. Will they attack every camp, or will they skip if the number of troops in an encampment is too large? I mean, I don't attack legions with an army of 100 units, why would they? Do factions have their own diplo range? And at what rate do they rebuild lost troops? And in the case of the Tower, what spells do those mages cast?

Hate implies that they won't be able to think rationally and attack regardless of their survival chance and army size.
To my knowledge there are no specific spells used by NPCs. This at least was the case when undead attacked with magic during one of the tournaments. Attacked troops should benefit from magic resistance so commnaders with maxed Force Of Will is a good idea.

Good point on the camp size, I guess that's something we'll find out in due course.
However if it is the case that they avoid large camps then that takes much of the sting out of  'Destroy at any cost'.

All the factions currently have a list of 'known Units' .....  we don't know if there are any unknown unit types yet to be deployed.   Would make things far more interesting if this was the case!

In the case of the Tower, they hate everyone equally so they could still be smart and kill the easier targets first. I don't agree that hate would mean they act entirely without thought.
Also: In future, when they seek to destroy cities will they use their forces on camps as well, or save every man to storm nearby towns?

I'm not sure if the factions allready attacked, but one thing that did change was scouting trade hubs. I did it before but there never were any troops at the hubs. Yesterday, I found 63 lost dwarves in the empty halls, which apparently were not that empty.

Thanks - nice to know.
I've scouted faction hubs before and got nothing ......  time to send out the scouts again.

OK just checked in my alt account and got this message:

The Tower patrol passes by your units at 529|-2937

Mechanical Patrol from the The Tower arrives at [529|-2937] in Calumnex and moves on without incident.

(GM note 18AUG13): Factions will not currently attack players; and as at this moment, attacking factions occupying map squares will not damage your standings in any way. We will give sufficient notice on the forums and in the patchnotes when we intend to change this state of affairs

So it looked like nothing had changed     However.........I also got this

Victorious battle against NPC units's forces at [529|-2937] in Calumnexby Erik Redbeard's forces from FS Goah Way

Two opposing forces clash against each other.

The close quarter hand-to-hand combat required when fighting in a building is a blessing to the well trained spear or swordsman. Cavalry, however, find it extremely hard to fight here.

Spear and swordsmen find that building fighting is their place to shine. An intimate knowledge of the choke points in a building also somehwat benefits defending bowmen despite their limited arcs of fire. Cavalry detest fighting in and around buildings.

Your army has defeated the defenders and your occupation of this location has begun.

Attackers:Unit:Quantity:Casualties:Survivors:
Commander: [c] Horsa IIICharioteers Charioteer1Damaged for 7, 93 health remains.
Troops:Charioteers Charioteers53738499
Troops:Knights Knights60004275573

Defenders:Unit:Quantity:Casualties:Survivors:
Troops:Shadow Mages Shadow Mages1531530

Obviously cav don't do well on that terrain .....  but it still resulted in  DEAD MAGES !  Big smile

######  EDIT #######

OK my mistake ... got all excited for a moment!
I sent a 2nd army to a vacant spot nr The Tower and a faction army occupied it before I got there .... so it was ME who attacked them!

*must read the report properly next time*  LOL
