Below is an example of an elite division attack.

Each commander has 10 Heroism. Only the commanders were equipped: plainsman spear (+60% plains), plainsman platemail (+60% plains), heavy warhorse (+5% plains attack). The divisions are elite, and because the commander types match the division troop types, the commanders also become elite (2x equipment bonus).

The troops were not equipped in this example.

The city wall was level 20 (maximum).

This particular army setup is also very good for hunting. Equipment for cavalry commanders would be: boar spear (all terrains), overpadded chainmail (all terrains) or plainsman platemail (plains), heavy warhorse (plains, all races) or dwarven battle mule (dwarves on hill or mountains) or war wolf (orcs on hills).

Two opposing forces clash against each other.

Cavalry comes into its own when able to strike hostile forces at will, and from unexpected directions - and nowhere is this more feasible than on open plains. Lightly armoured spear units, however, prefer terrain where there's some cover available.

Fighting defensively on open plains, cavalry draws strength from the ability to form and reform their lines of engagement depending on the direction of battle, and it is here where cavalry excels.

Your kill ratio would have been far superior if you used 5 commanders and 12 Runes per division.
