somethin new and i find exciting is land claims happening in broken lands! personally it would be nice for the alliances to explain the purpose of these claims, what they hope to achieve by doing such claims, and what new strategy the claims will bring to enhance the enjoyment of playing the game. please no negative comments but only postive explanation on the subject of claims.....thanks!

well first off the disclaimer, i am a junior officer of T-SC so the following are my opinions and understandings based on IGM conversations i have had with other players.  if any senior officer of T-SC says i am wrong about something then i am.

i currently know of 3 claims(there is a map on the T-SC alliance profile page with all 3 on it).  and each alliance has slightly different rules on what it means.

SIN claims exclusive rights to settle for themselves, HALO and FAM, based on the IGM conversations i have had with them they do not currently plan on letting anyone else not grandfathered in stay inside the claim.  HALO because they are close allies to them and FAM because the area is intermingled with a lot of FAM cities and they are also close to them if not exactly allies.

Broken Blades i dont know much about, honestly i had never heard of them before the land claim but based on their statement on their profile i am assuming they have a procedure for others to request permission to settle there with no issues.

now onto the T-SC policy.  we claim exclusive rights to settle for ourselves, our allies and anyone that has received permission through our application process.  we grandfathered in all current cities in the claim as well as grandfathering in all players with 3 or more cities inside the claim the right to expand without talking to us(we felt 3 cities proved they wanted to form a cluster and we dont have the right to interfere with that).  we did ask them to inform us of their future plans as they decide them so we can factor their growth in with ours so that we do not get in each others way.

but what you are asking is why we made the claim.  the main reason i pushed for it in our meeting about whether to make one or not was for planning purposes.  personally i tend to plan city growth 3-6 months in advance and it is irritating to make the plans and then 2 days before i send the terraform to the spot someone else settles within the 10sq of that spot completely blocking me(especially when they say no i cant settle there simply because "BL is wide open and there are lots of spots in BL to settle you dont have to settle by your alliance").  also i see this as a conflict reduction tool by getting players that plan on settling the same area talking before either player actually settles the spot, this early in the planning stages it is a lot easier to back down or adjust where you are planning on settling to accommodate each others playstyles.  i know for a fact this will not reduce wars if 2 alliances are planning on moving into the same area but i do feel by making public where alliances are generally planning on settling it will help other players decide on if they should move into the area or not.

another thing, as i find out about claims i plan on asking the member that made our map to update it so that newer players to the area have a single place to go to in order to find out who is claiming what.  the in game map will only show at max 3 alliances at the same time, i know when i first started playing it took me a few days of looking at the map to get a general feel for where each alliance is based.

From my first days in-game, I wondered why there was no claiming of land in Illyriad. It struck me as reasonable and as I learned the reasons it was frowned on, those reasons struck me as counterintuitive.

TBL has changed the dynamics to the point that a few alliances have decided it is in their best interest to go ahead with claims. As a player, I completely support those claims. As leader of TRIVIUM, I support those claims.

Claiming land should not be controversial but it is. That controversy comes from the past. Perhaps this new frontier will bring a new perspective and TBL will put an end to the controversy.

Land claims are cool and interesting, but you have to have the power, the reputation or both to keep it up.

From my very personal point of view, I really like the idea of claiming parts of the land... and would like it even more with features like fences, walls, watchtowers... but that's for future considerations Wink.

And yes, there had been bad attempts at land claims in the past, and there had been hard and quite severe actions against those claims. What went wrong? Well, the claimer had some military power, but chose to force unknowing newbies out (at least to my outsiders knowledge of this history). Many alliances said they should stop it, they didn't... well, end of land claim, end of the claiming alliance. Ouch

But that was at a time with a lot less space available, the claimer had no good reputation even before the claim, the area was much more densly settle beforehand, etc, etc.

Thus, my guess is, those claims might indeed work! And my best wishes to the alliances. But they are walking a very thin red line and will need all their diplomacy to be successful.

As a mostly peaceful player, I find the claims useful from the standpoint of avoiding territorial neighbors. With such a wide open map, better to know any conflicts up front.

The only problem with land claims by an alliance is that new players generally don't know about them. So they are more likely to run afoul of them then established players.

Land Claims are far from new.

When I was in EE, 3 years ago, an alliance called Fremen Society claimed Fremorn. And they went 'Join us, move, or die' at us. That included 4 EE leaders, including myself at the time. They didn't back it up, but the threat was there.

DARK claimed the Western Realm, and was agressive at it at the start. Two EE Leaders were involved there. One moved his cities away during the Consone War. The other became a Crow in that war.

And then there is Mal Motsha. Three alliances went at it there. They are now joined in DSD.

Abstractdream may remember that TVM (or its predecessor) tried a claim on Ursor.

These land claims will live in infamy. These sinister acts just go to show how Illy's halo is slipping. We are indeed at the southern crossroads of our game. Our peaceful existence will be broken. Blades will be unsheathed. Oh woe is me. Wink

Land Claims are not new. Agreed. Why is that even a question?

TLR did not make a land claim. We proclaimed our intent to settle the area but we did not publish a claim, nor did we outline any specific area and declare it "off limits" to others.

I understand the rhetoric that's shared within the channels of the major alliances you've been a member of is necessarily slanted against us and I know the victors write the history but I will not allow your statement to go unchallenged.

I await your reply to prove my above statement wrong (I've been wrong before).

I was giving an example, and I am aware it was EF making the claim. There is no slanting meant here, just showing some history.

I will IGM you
