A simple question to promote discussion:
What's the largest amount of unsolicited gold you would receive, without you asking the sender about it?

Regardless of the amount, I'd ask, just because I'm curious. Depending on who it is, I'd have ideas of why but I'd still ask.

It seems "normal" these days for Vets to send upwards of 1-5 mil to newbies. More than that and I'd look at it sideways.

I'd ask about any gold amount. But I do a number of private trade transactions, and I'd be concerned that I missed sending the items to a buyer. But 5M and up would immediately get my attention, and I would have a strange feeling about smaller players sending me lots of cash.

that answer may be different tomorrow as i consider the impact of Odd's ejection.
yesterday, i would have said (with a nod to Glen Cook) that gold has no provenance.

Many moons ago someone sent me 1m gold after chatting about things in GC. I did ask for clarification, which was freely given. The devs have acted properly, based on the presented explanation. If anyone on the fringes got caught up in the punishment I think their beef should be with the exploiter, not the devs.

Rare instance I have given gold to noobs outside alliance. In Alliance, from alliance coffers, during wartimes, it is normal to receive a large amount, not in the billion range mind you, to support troop building and holding.. as going in negative gold is expected. I would say 1 mil max is all I have ever been given and not since being a noob in WOT from an alliance mate.

Honestly this whole thing has me racking my brains. I receive gifts occasionally, usually it's a token like some cows or a flower or something, but occasionally people send me valuable stuff. I think the most I've received was about 10 million gold, but it's also possible that I received some that I didn't even notice, now that caravan deliveries are not included in e-mails. I think I would probably notice if I suddenly had 1 billion more gold than I did before though.
I can empathize with folks who received things and did not ask a lot of questions. Sometimes I receive something from a player I don't know who is relatively new, and it's an alt or a terraformer or something.
I know in the future I will watch things more carefully.

Yea, that's a iffy one. I've gotten "gifts" from players, big gold shipments (50 million, not half a billion...lol) and didn't notice for I dunno how long...a couple days at least. That leaves some doubt in my mind.
A player with a lot of cities, who isn't quite as focused on the game as they perhaps were previously, regularly gets a lot of caravans incoming (alliance taxes for example) and someone sends them a massive gold shipment. Is it that far fetched that it wouldn't be noticed right away? At this point, I can only shrug shoulders and assume that, without some other details coming to light, it would not be a banning violation, but I don't know that for a fact. Chilling...as far as a game can get chilling.

I cannot imagine that anyone would miss a billion gold influx into one of their towns. Even to the most affluent players in the game, that's no pocket change.

Similar thing: sometimes I've seen strange trades at centrum which have "apparently" been keyed in the wrong way: like 1 wood for 25m gold each instead of 25m wood for 1 gold each. Naturally I have taken advantage of these extremely generous trades and funnily enough no-one has ever complained! It happens only rarely, but it does happen.

I would question any random gold turning up in my cities, if I had noted it - purely because of my RL job
But the figures being 'quoted' I'd note, as I don't keep a lot of gold in my cities

perhaps if they were being sat and the person sitting them was a cheat--- then I may say they may not have noticed.
oh-- thats kind of what happened, right?

Unfortunately you are responsible for the actions of your sitters, and your sitters can get you banned. Choose your sitters wisely.

Under notifications... there is a way to NOTICE things incoming into to your city (s), I look there to see what has happened since I haven't been online. Usually I investigate who came to my city and why. Notifications cover all your cities, am I right?

yes. except for the occasional glitch when you dont get a notification. Those are quite irritating. I have used notifcations to prove to other alliances a trade history before.

Good question, but I have no idea. Why don't a ton of players send me vast amounts of unsolicited gold and i'll get back with you on when I decide its appropriate to message the sender.

I have gotten to the point that I log in to chat with people I've come to know over the three years I've been playing this game. I rarely look at how much gold I have in any given city. If an extra billion showed up in the hours between my visits, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't notice. This has me very worried that someday I will try to log in and will not be able to because of some unknown infraction. I've come to love the Illy community, and would be heartbroken if that were to happen.
