Throughout this guide, I shall be posting a real exchange between myself and another alliance leader. Disclaimer: All mails posted with permission, for the purpose of educating others.

Step One: The Proposal

Your first mail to an alliance leader regarding a NAP request should always contain 'NAP Request' in the title, show that your have read their alliance page thoroughly and be respectful at all times.

Greetings Caconafyx,

Whilst I respect and agree with your alliance principals, I'm afraid I will not tolerate this talk of cow sacrifice to Sa'Belle. She looks at me funny and plays pass the parcel wrong. Instead, I propose a tropical fruit salad be presented to GM Stormcrow on nekkid Thursday and a cricket bat be erected to commemorate the noble, apathetic and completely pointless joining of our great alliances.

If this is agreeable to you, please include a watermelon and pineapple with your reply. Q&S shall provide the mango, passion fruits and papaya.

Kind regards,

Auraya

How can I not send a pineapple and watermelon after that email... unfortunately I will have to sacrifice a small portion of it to Belle or she'll get grumpy (grumpier)

Caconafyx

Step Two: The Reply

Be prepared to haggle. If they do not accept your original terms, see if you can come to another mutually beneficial arrangement. You must always be reasonable in your demands.

You drive a hard bargain. I shall agree on the understanding that you shall include a pomegranite, to make up for the defecit. No-one wishes to anger the Illy Gods by presenting them with inferior fruity offerings.

I've discussed it with my co-alliance member... we're perpared to go as high as a cumquat but no further - sorry, but times are still tough economically - especially for a new alliance :)

Caconafyx

Take note that Caco discusses the proposal with his alliance. This is important. An involved alliance is a happy alliance.

Step Three: Accept or Reject

If reasonable terms can be agreed, accept the NAP. Congratulations! You have successfully formed a NAP!

If reasonable terms cannot be agreed, politely decline and go your own separate ways without resorting to threats, badmouthing in GC/AC or resorting to military action. Don't be disheartened, other opportunities will come along in time :)

In our example, we have accepted the NAP:

I suppose that may suffice but we offer no aid should the wrath of SC rain down upon you and yours.

Good day to your sir.

Auraya

I hope this guide has been educational. Best of luck forming positive and constructive relationships with your Elgean peers.

I disagree with the concept of haggling introduced here. NAP's and the like are not bartering items, they are publications of trust or cooperation at least. If you begin trading with them, soon you will be able to trust no one.

I would do a NAP anytime, if I get such a nice fruitsalad offer!  Thumbs Up

Very nice guide, informative, and I had a smile on my face while reading the post...

And Torden...
NAP just means: "At the moment I have no intention to attack you in near future, and would like to avoid harvesting incidents..."

If you look for loyalty and cooperation, you should choose Confederation to make it public.

Not sure if I learned anything, but I was smiling the whole time reading it.
