Ok i have a question  Assassins and Sabs how many is enough in a city..

They are used as defense against other Assassins and sabs  and i understand that.  I just am unsure of the numbers that are needed.

Do i need 10, or 50 or 100 or 1k?

To me 1K seems like a lot for these types of diplo units.

Any and all insight would be welcome.

^^ ignore this; scorpiain has 21k Assassins. I know this because I sent my 50k* master spies, cunningly disguised as castle wall bricks.

* maybe is was 90k, but I wouldn't tell you. You'd need to send 140k** spies to find out.
** this doesn't really need a footnote; I'm sure you have the idea by now.

You need 0 (zero). Assassins and Saboteurs are very often nothing but a distraction.

Sabs and assassins are useful as offense but in defense I dunno if they are quite practical in the numbers required to be effective, especially long term. Build a level 20 Runemasters Grounding and caste a Ward of Destruction.

Attempting to defend against sabs and assassins is fairly pointless with the current diplo dynamics.  I generally recommend that a city of any significant size maintain some sabs and assassins on the theory that "it can't hurt."  But I wouldn't invest a lot of gold in maintaining them.

Or would I ...

i often use sabs as a way to scout peeps looking for inactive or seldom play accounts....this information is very valuable in times of war. there are various tricks in how to use them....ass dips can ruin people when u are attacking their sov squares, they can actually be used to encourage recall of siege armies.....alot of times i send dips to strike the fear of wrath that will soon be upon them...give them a chance to peacefully end conflict. they are of much value when used correctly but are seldom a defensive tool.

I think remembering specialization is the key.  The optimal way to maintain large groups of units (military or diplomatic) is with specialist buildings.  Putting a variety of specialist buildings in a city isn't practical so cities tend to support one or two types of units, and a lot of them.  A player that specializes their cities will have many ten's of thousands of the specialized unit and <200 of any other units.  An attack of <200 can be handled quite nicely by spells.  An attack of many ten's of thousands would need a like number of defenders.

The short answer is 0, use spells.
