I and one of my alliance mate have very different thinking on how the crafting bonus works.

Suppose weapon A says -2% attack +4% cav defense +2% infantry defense

My view

Troops wearing this weapon when attacking a camp of cavalry will face -2% bonus or 2% penalty (from the -2% attack thing)

My alliance mate's view

In the same situation the troops should get +2% bonus (as attacking that camp and fighting will involve both attack and defense so -2+4=2)

Your alliance mate is incorrect.  There is only 1 attacker in Illy combat, that is the player that launched his army at the defending camp.  The attacking side only uses the attack factors.

A weapon that is -2 attack, +4 cavalry defense, +2 infantry defense will give -2 when you attack and +4 against cavalry and +2 against infantry when you defend.

Can GM's confirm this please, I also have my doubts. If this is true, there is no use of giving cav commanders army defense stats, as I use cav only for attack and never defense.

There are other posts in the forums on this topic. A GM or 2 has confirmed this in those topics.

Search the forums.

It is always a good idea to search the forums to see if your question has already been answered.

No I won't point you to the specific topic. I would have to do the Search the same as you. Search and learn.

Doubt The_Dude at your own peril! Evil Smile

If a Cmdr will never be used on defense, do not use XP on his defense bonuses.

But in Illy, if you don't defend that means you don't attack. Right TD??

The problem with searching forum is that there is so many spam that you can't find anything at all. Some guys are more often here then in game (no offence).
