I sent troops to clear:  http://elgea.illyriad.co.uk/#/World/Map/-778/14/4

My alt then sieged the city and selected the storm and capture. However, they were greeted by forces who destroyed them. I lost 500 soldiers and 30 catapults.

Approximately three hours after my failed siege, the clearing army from my alt attacked the city and found no defenders.

Where do these phantom defenders come from? Have the devs activated ghost troops to defend the accounts of the abandoned?

Komp - I have seen several cases where a clearing army encounters no troops then a seige army arrives shortly later and engages troops - this has happened at inactive cities.

I have seen this happen, a friend cleared some infringing troops from a rare res but the ghosts still killed his harvesters. Sent more troops and nothing there, scouts and nothing there.

the same happened to my friend this morning he cleared the troops in the town later the siege army went in to capture he had troops in the town.and failed.why does this happens so?

I have found this before (even with npcs), in my experience it only occurs when the clearance attack and proper attack are timed within the same 90 secs or so.

This prooved very problematic for me during the elemental tourney when I was co-ordinating cav clearances with small occupations.  I just learnt to give a little more time between each attack.

I guess that this maybe purposefull so as to give defenders a chance to organise troops, by forcing the attacker not to co-ordinate attacks just seconds appart.

dark the clearing army was 1 day before the capturing army went in

It sounds like I am not the only person this has happened to with the difference being that my clearing army cleared the town quite a while before my storm & capture.

25 Feb 2013 02:36:53 I cleared Purgatory's Gate with Kompanion.

26 Feb 2013 02:28:05  I sieged Oenomaus's town of Purgatory's Gate with my alt.

26 Feb 2013 21:39:37 My alts army stormed to capture Purgatory's Gate.

26 Feb 2013 21:59:36 My siege army was destroyed after having cleared an inactive town.

27 Feb 2013 01:29:35 My alts army arrived at Purgatory's Gate and found no defenders.

The glitch seems to "hide" defenders from armies that do not include siege machines only to "reveal" these defending troops when an army with siege machines enters the city.

OUCH, you sure the account was inactive?

Darkwords, we've seen this many times on inactive accounts.

Is it many times, or every time?  Been a while since I seged an inactive.

Just wondering if the devs have writen something in to make inactives armies only fight against seige forces.

_every_time, I can not say for certain.  Most times, yes.  Most of the inactive city's troops will engage clearing armies.  But when a siege - whether strafing or storming to raze/capture - enters the city, suddenly there are fresh troops - not assigned to an army as if just produced from barracks.  I've seen about 50 troops appear just a few minutes after a clearing army passed through so there was no way that was current build queue completing between armies.

There were 500 troops or so to greet my siege army. The account had gone about 71 days since the last log in. There couldn't have been anything in queue.

I used prestige in an effort to beat the devs from deleting the account of the city I wished to siege. After further contemplation I am guessing that Karma has been incorporated into the game mechanics.

WOW!  500 ghost troops!  That's much more than we've encountered in RES.

OK, here is a Scout Report, Clearing Attack Battle Report, and Siege Storming Battle Report that illustrates the Ghost Troops issue.  Note that Gruntfuttock has been inactive since about January 2.

Two opposing forces clash against each other.
Cavalry comes into its own when able to strike hostile forces at will, and from unexpected directions - and nowhere is this more feasible than on open plains. Lightly armoured spear units, however, prefer terrain where there's some cover available.

Fighting defensively on open plains, cavalry draws strength from the ability to form and reform their lines of engagement depending on the direction of battle, and it is here where cavalry excels.

So, there was about 31 hours between the Scout report and the clearing attack.  The clearing attack killed all the units in the scout report.  No new units appeared on the clearing attack report.  So if no new units are produced during 31 hours on the inactive account, then there were no units in the barracks queue.  Also, Level 20 Barracks with no Sov produces 6 Swordsman per hour.  About 48 hours interval between clearing attack and storming attack - 288 units should have been produced if this was barracks queue.

Gruntfuttock was unaligned and there was no Cmdr/Army so these could not have been reinforcements that arrived post clearing attack.

So where did the 262 Swordsmen come from?

They're ghosts, I say!  Ghosts!
