Setting

Hidden inside the Turalian mountains far away, are a complex network of caverns and mines. A mechanical menagerie, numerous taverns, jewelers and blacksmiths fill this underground haven. A tribe of dwarves reside here, most of them miners who work hard (and drink hard) out of sight from the land dwellers above. They are ruled by Queen Auraya, a noble dwarf (with distinctly pointy ears) who has fought to keep intruders out and protect their precious resources.

For over a hundred years, this tribe has survived peacefully but alas things cannot always remain so. The stocks of silversteel have been slowly depleting, dwarves have begun to go missing and a mystery is afoot. Who could be responsible?

[Game Mechanics

All players will be split into 2 groups - dwarves and humans. Every other night (48 hours) all players must vote (by mailing Auraya) for who they want to be killed as a suspect human. Whoever gets the majority of votes (published in the "kill post") will be killed off, ties will result in no kill that night. Kills will reveal the true identity of the player. The winner is the side who manages to kill all members of the opposite team.

Essentially, it's a game of strategy. Humans will know who each other are, dwarves will only know who they are. Humans will try to deceive the dwarves and the dwarves will try to spot the humans through their voting patterns and any inconsistencies in their posts.

Some players (known as specials) will have a special action they can perform either once per game or once per voting round. This will be made clear if you are chosen and only the special player will know what their special action is.

There will be 6 houses and 10 rooms in the tavern assigned on a first come, first served basis. Some of these have special properties, some don't - pick a number.

I will attempt to have all "kill posts" done by 11pm - please be patient if it is a little longer.

Rules

#1: Queen Auraya cannot be killed or voted for (sorry folks!)
#2: You are out of the game when killed in a post made by Auraya and ONLY Auraya. No killing each other.
#3: Anyone can sign up. By signing up you agree to post in character as a dwarf. If you wish to post a small aside out of character, please make this clear by using [].
#4: You must not admit if you are a special or a human - not even in game or on skype etc or if people guess.
#5: Votes must be made by 9pm server time.
#6: You MUST vote each round or vote for no kill. Votes cannot be changed once made.
#7: Discuss voting on the forum, not outside of it. It's a forum game! (Humans can use PMs, obviously)

Available specials will be posted shortly. These will be assigned randomly, you cannot choose them. If you wish to join, please post your character description below! Remember to pick a house/room. Good luck everyone! I hope we have a good round ^_^

I'll have House number 2 please :) I'll write a bio shortly.

Edit for bio:

Hali's family have lived in the expansive caverns below the Turalian Mountains for several generations now passing down their skills as blacksmiths through the ages.

The life if a dwarven blacksmith is hard work and long hours and when he isn't working like most dwarves he can be found in the tavern, nothing quite matches up to a large glass of dwarven ale after a hard day of work.

Hamlick is a dorf who has lived in a rather cramped tunnel network, in the Qaro region, with his family. He followed his father, Hamlock, in his dangerous trade of Iceheart mining. Now Hamlick has struck out to make his own fortune in the large dwarf settlement in the Turalian mountain region.

Hamlick is average height for a dwarf with a long beard that he keeps tucked into his belt (Tip from his father; free moving beards and lit candles do not mix). He is an outgoing dwarf who enjoys the traditional sport of the dorfs. "How fast can you drink that mug of ale"  *He was regional champion in Quaro and hopes to set a record in Turalian.

The dwarf Thes has always had a special knack for finding the best mushrooms, spearing the tastiest cave fish, and even being able snatch bats out of the air. Some of her fellow dwarfs back in dwarf school used to laugh and call her names. Because she was more interested in learning how the ecosystems of the caves functioned, than in how to pull the shining materials from the caves. She has been known to protest and sulk when a mining operation has taken out a particularly special or rare species of cave cricket. Though her fellow dwarfs put up with her because she has been a relatively good provider of mushrooms, and fresh meat.

The dwarf Forraid, wife of Harbold the Hardy, has traveled the length and breadth of the land seeking the best prices for a wide variety of rare and precious gems and metals. Her husband and sons are whitesmiths of great renown, fashioning objects both artistic and practical. Her journeying has brought her to Room 7 of the Tavern. She was told that only in Auraya's underground realm below Turalia could she find the rare earth reagent needed to anneal a metal hitherto unknown. Her eyes are bright blue and miss nothing. Tiny silver bells adorn her red hair and muttonchops, which she keeps braided underneath her chin and tucked into her ample bodice. The rumor among the serving wenches is that the tiny key hidden in her braid is a spare that she had made to fit the chastity belt her husband crafted to insure her faithfulness. It is said that she can smell a vein of silversteel in the dark, she can hear the taint of a lie on the most practiced lips, and her touch with an axe is death to foes.

Duín Springheel is so named because of his jaunty approach to life among the somber miners that make up his race. Always welcome at balls, mine openings, and other social events, this dwarf is a skilled musician, especially in the popular "rock" and "metal" music genres of today's dwarven culture. He makes a living off his musical talents, although it has been noted that he has a way of winning large sums of money in betting and card games, and he has an eye for the best price in a market. His wanderings have brought him to Queen Aurya's somber mine, which he hears could use some cheering up.... He currently resides in room 10 in the tavern.

To increase playability, Can you consider telling just one human to each human player.. rather than all the names?
That will stop them taking total control early on (as in a small game 2-3 votes could swing it way too fast)

I am a highly unusual dwarf in that I am not as hairy as my clan, but that is not the only way in which I am unusual;
I will clarify other differences at a later date.
I am the daughter of the clan chieftain Greypacer, and we live in a hamlet outside the mines in Ursor. My mam died during a fearsome attack by mountain trolls, so it has been left to me to run the Longhouse and village while my father ensures the smooth mining of Deep Silver. My character is one of affability and affection, with the strength and fortitude expected of our race.

[I think we need to make a move on this although there are not as many players as I would have liked despite the recruitment drive :( I'll have to tweak the mechanics a bit, was hoping to get a chaotic character in but that doesn't seem possible. Expect to start within 48 hours - tell your friends!]

There are two opposing sides, In this version Dwarves and Humans. When the game starts you will get a message saying what character you are for the game which will either be a dwarf, a human or a special (The special will still be a dwarf or a human but has extra powers i'll cover in a minute). The aim of the game is for the dwarves to eliminate all the humans and the humans to eliminate all the dwarves, you must do this by working as a team.

The way it works is every 2 days there is a public vote where everyone votes for someone to be lynched (killed) or for there to be no lynch. The twist however is the dwarves do not know who the humans are whereas the humans know who is a human and who is a dwarf, this means they need to work together to kill off the dwarves while at the same time the dwarves must try work out who they think is a human. They can work this out by looking at things such as the voting of everyone, there can be certain patterns such as a group of players always voting the same which can give the humans away etc. After the vote every 2 days the majority vote happens, so say 6 out of 10 vote no lynch there is no lynch, if the majority is someone is lynched they are killed and their true identity (dwarf or human) is revealed. This continues until all of one team are killed.

The specials for each side as well as voting have a power to help their team out. In the last game there was one which let a player choose someone off the other side to kill once every 2 days for example. The special powers will be fully explained at the start of the game.

Throughout the game you post in here in character and the idea is to bounce of what everyone else is saying and build up the roleplay. It can sound complex but once you give it a go you should pick it up fairly quickly and there is always someone at hand should you still have any questions after starting.

[What Halithore says, I couldn't put it better. Don't worry, I'll guide you through it and you can mail me with any questions - just remember to keep checking the thread and to mail your vote every other day.

Specials:

Assassin
Alignment: Humans
Special Action: Assassinate a dwarf
Description: The Assassin is a master of stealth and ruthless to the core. This character will stalk it's target until the opportunity to kill arises and hide the remains where they will never be found.

Blacksmith
Alignment: Dwarves
Special Action: Reinforce a dwelling
Description: Each night, the blacksmith will travel to the home of a dwarf and reinforce the doors so no assassin can enter.

Master of the House
Alignment: Dwarves
Special Action: Spike drink
Description: Everyone visits the tavern! The Master of the House is not the barkeep but the mysterious owner. With access to everyone's drinks, this player can spike a drink which will knock them unconscious - preventing them voting or doing any special actions.

Necromancer
Alignment: Dwarves
Special Action: 50% chance to reanimate the dead.
Description: The Necromancer is a very powerful being. His power in the Dark Arts allows him to revive a player who has died. These players will be little more than zombies, unable to form a cohesive sentence and will vote with their master.

Archaeologist
Alignment: Chaotic
Special Action: Assassinate either a dwarf or human.
Description: The Archaeologist cares little for their dwarven brethren or the human invaders. The interest of this player is purely on preservation of the mines to prevent the destruction of rare fossils. His hatred of everyone around him has led him to murder one of them each night while they sleep.

So far, this is the most specials I think we can support. I'll write the start post and update the player list asap, watch this space!]

Nicanor Thundercheek - not a reference to his snoring at all - had been visiting the Turalian mountains every four or five months for more years than he could count - just don't ask how high he can count. He stayed in room 8 every time, where he prepared for the occasion that could change his life forever. And forever is a long time indeed.

The purpose of his vacations from his own family mine was the singular task of proposing to Queen Auraya. Unfortunately something went wrong every time. Tripping on his own flowing brown beard had been solved by adopting the habit of tucking it into his belt, but there were plenty of incidents far beyond his control. Such as the time a passing miner slapped the back of a friend, resulting in a puff of some kind of dust billowing up in Nicanor's face. He sneezed, bursting apart the flower he had smuggled in from the wilds to give to the pointy-eared queen and making an unsightly mess of himself. Or the time something had gone wrong with a forge and its smoke didn't go up the right ventilation shaft. Instead it smoked out a den of subterranean lizards, who stampeded. Not that they were overly dangerous, but Queen Auraya was soft of heart and spent the rest of his stay cooing at the poor things after they were rounded up. And they soaked it up, on the rock lilies she found for them to lounge on, with all the rodents they could ever want adding to their bellies and making him hungrier by the day. Nicanor just couldn't compete.

But this would be the time, if nothing went wrong...like a human invasion or something...

count with me
but still... i don't realy understand how is that pounded, humans know themselfs, so they know who's dwarf while dwarfs know nothing making them easy targets cause they can't organize...
please explain better

The humans get a PM telling them who the other humans are so they can talk between themselves, It isn't as easy as all voting for the same person everyday though as that would leave them very identifiable very quickly.

[There are a lot LESS humans than dwarves. It's not a 50-50 situation! The humans have the advantage of knowing who each other are but that's not a massive advantage when there are over twice as many dwarves.. and like Hal says, they can't always vote together - nor can they be particularly vocal persuading others to vote for dwarves as that would make them a target next vote. It's very tricky being a human if the dwarves are organised and pay attention ^_~ ]

[Welcome everyone who has signed up! We have enough players to add in a chaotic and another special! I'll work on those now and edit the post asap. I'll post the starting post tonight, tomorrow will be day #1 and then Monday will be the day you have to vote.

Everyone will receive a message via the forum to say who they are. That should be tonight, providing the forum doesn't get mad at me for sending too many messages within an hour.. I might mail Luna about that actually and see if it can be removed :P

@dspn: I use chatzy to assign all roles, I'm afraid you get what you are given by the computer :(

Everyone should now have been notified of their role via pm. If you have not received a forum pm telling you who you are, please pm me ASAP and I shall resend. ]

Queen Auraya was polishing her silversteel collection when she was interrupted by what sounded like a hammer repeatedly colliding with her front door. She went to see what was going on.

Standing on her doorstep was her friend Susan Calvin, next to Kilotov who was indeed wielding an excessively large hammer (and an excessively large grin.) There were some crater-ish dents in her door panels which she pretended not to mind whilst mentally making a note to visit the blacksmith.

"How many I help you?" She enquired through gritted teeth.
"Yoink would like to see you." Susan replied. Kilotov said nothing and merely continued his inane grinning.
"Did he say why?"
"No ma'am, just that it was urgent and we should get your attention."
"You have certainly achieved your task." Auraya replied curtly and stepped past them in the direction of Yoink's mine.

She had just arrived when Yoink grabbed her and pulled her into the shadows, making a 'shush' gesture.

"Thurs bin ah mehrder!" Yoink whispered and pointed further into the darkness. It took Auraya a second to translate the accent but when she saw the body of a young, female dwarf lying face down in the dirt, the meaning became clear. Shocked, Auraya went to the body and turned it over. It was Luna, a well respected citizen who had repeatedly assisted her in royal duties. Her throat had been cut and the smell was unbearable - the corpse was not fresh.

Out of the corner of her eye, Aura spotted a glint of something metallic. Her dwarves instincts called her to investigate and she found a knife, half buried under some rubble. Upon examination, Auraya realised this was not a dwarven knife.. it looked like it had been made by humans. Her worst fear had become reality, humans had infiltrated their precious home with the intention of stealing all the silversteel. She beckoned to Yoink.

"Gather everyone together. Tell them it is as we feared. The humans are here and we must find them before it is too late. Every other night, we shall hold a vote to try and find the culprit. In the meantime, dwarves should come forward with any information they have on the humans so that we may reach the correct verdict. I trust you shall deliver this message for me."
"Aye, mah Keen. Ah shall do as ye rekest." Yoink replied solemnly, bowing once to her and again to the remains of Luna before turning away.

Sorry that this is late, it's been a busy few days.  And I know that this is out of turn, but I'll work it in without disturbing the flow of things.

Roryn Skullsplitter, of the clan Skullsmasher, wakes up in his tavern room in a foul mood.  Yesterday, during a key moment of crafting, he struck the magnificent axe he had been working on just a trifle too hard.  It flattened the blade, and made the edge just a little brittle.  He had thrown the whole project back into the fire, melting it back into slag.

Any other smith would have simply folded the cutting edge back into itself making it slightly unbalanced, however Roryn was no ordinary smith.  His fame had spread far and wide, causing Queen Auraya to ask for his particular talents crafting an axe for a potential suitor.

Dressing swiftly in his sweat stained clothes, he then heads down to the common room of the tavern.
He sits in a chair by the fire, and orders his breakfast...the same breakfast he has eaten for the past three months.  25 blood sausages, a bakers dozen of wheatcakes with syrup and butter, and 3 flagons of dwarven fire ale.  Shoveling his food in, he ignores all conversation, mentally crafting the axe in his head.

Pushing away from the table, he drains the last of his ale, and heads to the smithy to begin his work.  In order to pay for the rent the local smith is charging him, he steels himself to craft some mundane items before he can devote time to his axe.  "For some reason, this community tends to need door panels quite often," he muses.

Duín struck a chord, and the band started to play.  Music filled the smokey tavern as dwarves quaffed and laughed and generally had a good time.  He surveyed the crowd.  Plenty of regulars, generally miners enjoying themselves after a day of silversteel mining, however there were a few faces in the crowd he wasn't familiar with. Well, soon enough they'd be dancing along to his music.  "When all you touch/turns silversteel/can wear you down/can make you feel/as if the days/have grown too long/and work is just/a form of sonnngggg...."  He sang. A commotion in the back made him stop.  Looking around, he recognized a dwarf with decidedly pointy ears, who was striding toward the stage.  Queen Auraya. Something was definitely amiss, judging by the worried look in her eyes.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02j6I2RAws" rel="nofollow - [Link to the song  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02j6I2RAws" rel="nofollow - Du http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02j6I2RAws" rel="nofollow - ] .

Hamlick stumbled out of his house and up into the daylight, at the entrance to the tunnel network, he stood still for a few moments, blinking to adjust his eyes to the first rays of sunlight creeping over the trees nearby. Just as he finished getting his last taste of fresh air, before a long day down in the mine, he heard delicate footsteps moving up behind him at quite a pace, Hamlick started too turn, but suddenly he found himself flung down into the mud.

Hamlick lifted his head out of a pool of rather nasty smelling mud, (It hadnt rained, so what made the mud wet, he decided he did not want to know), just in time to see a tall dwarf with decidedly pointy ears heading into the tunnel network at a fair pace..    Hamlick picked himself up, sighed and wiped his face and hands on a handy sheep that had walked too close to the tunnel (refer to the mud earlier)  and set off after his Queen, in a decidedly bad mood, but if the Queen wasnt paying attention to her subjects, something must have shaken her

[Just. You can only be either human or dwarf, I'll mail you. Everyone will know you're not a special since those have already been assigned. It's up to you. If you want in, pick a dwelling. Houses 8-10 are free, as is room 5.]

Mayflower settled down in an empty seat and orders a mug of watered ale. After a day of hard work, she was glad to be able to relax with her fellow dwarfs in the tavern.

As she stretched her sore limbs, she took a look around the large common room. To her surprise, she saw Queen Auraya sitting at an empty table on her own, looking quite distraught. Mayflower had not spoken directly to the Queen before, but she knew that Auraya was a good ruler that cared for her people. Mayflower wondered why the Queen looked so upset, and she wished there was something she could do to cheer the good Queen up.

Hali sat in the Tavern with a large glass of strong dwarven ale, a hard day of work behind him his thoughts now firmly fixed on wasting the night away. As he sat drink in hand at the table he could hear the band starting to play in the background. The song served only to remind him of the place he was trying to forget, so trying to blank it out he took up his glass and finished what was in it in one large gulp before setting off to the bar for another.

As he was on route to the bar he noticed the Queen looking very stressed and his thoughts wandered to what she could be so panicked about. Looking obviously hurried however he thought it best to let her on with her business, he was sure if it was important he would hear about it soon enough. With that he shouted to the barkeep for another glass and went back to his seat to continue his quest of forgetting the day.

Thes trudged into town, with a large woven basket over flowing with glowing mushrooms on her back. At the edge of town she drew herself up, and sniffed the air warily. "I feel something coming in the Air tonight... Oh Lord." She grumbles quietly to herself.

She hurries to the back of the tavern as fast as her heavy burden will let her, where she dumps the entire basket in the back. She hurries into the Tavern to confirm her fear, that tragedy has struck the town.

Ithilwien is in her usual spot next to the bar offering greetings to all the strong young dwarves as they come in from a hard day in the mines or practicing their craft.  As she is enjoying a mug of dwarven ale and the "scenery" the queen, looking particularly bothered and in a hurry, moved past the bar toward the stage.

"maybe she too wants the song to end" she said under her breath but worried that the queens demeanor appeared to have a more serious nature

The Queen had been rushing about all day making arrangements for Luna's funeral. Looking around her, she realised most people had not heard about the murder. Where was Yoink? Sighing, she stood up to make the announcement.

"For those of you who have not heard the news, a loyal dwarf and good friend to the community has been murdered. Evidence suggests that this was down to human intervention. I suspect they are here, living among us. Tomorrow night, I shall be avenging the death of the dwarf Luna. I hope you will all assist me by voting for who you believe is the guilty party. Please, if you have any information then share it with us. Let us have a minute of silence, in respect for Luna and her family at this difficult time."

Bowing her head, she let herself remember the times the two of them had shared. They were both busy dwarves but their time together was pleasant and she would be missed in the community. When the time was up, she took her seat and ordered another tankard of house ale.

Selos Silverblade groaned as he stumbled back into the main settlement. He hated guarding the deep mines. The vile creatures he fought down there always gave him nightmares... but at least the job paid well enough. It was finally time for his vacation, and it was time to drown the pains of his battles in drink.

When he stumbled into the tavern he noticed the good Queen sitting at the bar, drinking morosely, and wondered what had happened. Ithilwien offered her usual greeting as he took his normal seat, and he half-heartedly returned it. While he waited for his drink and food to arrive, he scratched at the itchy cloth bandage bound around his upper arm, where his worst wound from in the mines still festered. Then he loosened his sword belt and drowned himself in drink.

The end of a long day has passed uneventfully in the smithy.  Roryn has mindlessly fashioned another dozen door panels, along with a slightly more challenging set of rock chisels.  As he enters the tavern, he sees an unusually large gathering.  Knowing that they couldn't be here for the music, he finds an empty table and motions for the serving girl to bring him his usual dinner; a rack of bbq mutton ribs, 4 loaves of bread, 2 platters of steamed cave mushrooms, and 3 tankards of dwarven ale.  And for dessert, a small cask of dwarven whiskey.  After demolishing his dinner, he finally sits back and notices who is in the crowd.

Spying Queen Auraya, he stands (only slightly unsteadily), and makes his way over to the unusually somber dwarf.  Doing something that he does not do on a regular basis, he sets his mind to actually converse with someone.  Realizing that this may or may not have anything to do with the amount of drink he has consumed, he approaches her and says,  "I realize that your axe has not been delivered, but there is no use shedding tears over it.  Here, share a drink with me, and I'll explain what has happened to delay your order."

[Please check the links to your bios on the table, first post. Hopefully everything is where it's supposed to be!]

As Roryn speaks to her, Auraya realises the message isn't getting out. Giving him a weary smile, she shakes her head and hands him the funeral leaflet she had spent two hours designing.

"Everything should be made clear in there, please hand them round. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10am. The voting starts tonight. If anyone has any information, I'd be glad to hear it. Right now, I have no suspects except Kilotov.. and he has an alibi backed up by the entire blue man group."

Sighing, Queen Auraya bid everyone good evening and headed home to prepare herself for the night ahead.

A slightly smelly Hamlick sat down on a bench in the crowded tavern (which quickly became a bench he had to himself). He nodded his head at the barkeep and then at the big vat behind him and mimed tipping his head back), the barkeep got the message and brought over the vat which Hamlick started to chug merrily.

Hamlick was rather rudely interrupted mid way into his favourite past time, by someone handing him a leaflet.. and Hamlick was about to have a nice little rant when he noticed the content of the leaflet.. and was deeply saddened.. he had only spoken to Luna twice whilst being in the town (and to his shame, both times were not the politest of exchanges) but he still felt her loss.

As he went back to getting nicely "dorfed" [yes, I invent words, deal with it] he cast looks around at the other patrons.. wondering who could have done such a foul deed. Not seeing as obvious Human features on any of the dwarfs in the tavern, he decided to vote no lynch tonight.. he could not bring himself to kill an innocent, even if it was not directly by his hand.    He would watch and see...

After it coming to light what had happened Ithilwien did not know how to think of the situation. She scanned the faces in the tavern not seeing any that, as least to her, looked guilty of such a horrible crime.  She has known so many of these dwarfs that she could not stand to choose one to have his life taken without something more to go on.

Ithilwien must vote for no lynch this evening! She passed on her decision to the queen and after finishing another tankard of ale she quietly left the tavern to go to her home and mourn the loss of Luna.

Forraid sat glumly at the table from which she had been meeting miners and traders alike for several weeks. The atmosphere in the tavern was uneasy since word of the murder of Luna had shattered the comfortable tavern fellowship. She stroked her gingery whiskers and then drained her tankard of stout.
Looking about the room, she realized that no one looks like a murderer. Disgusted at her lack of progress in finding the rare material needed to open a new niche in whitesmithing, she realized this new development would likely make everyone more distrustful. She fingered the tiny key entwined in her beard, then tucked the only sample she owned of the white metal her husband called electrum safely into her ample bosom. Determined to learn more about matters, she rose to address her nearest neighbor. Perhaps by working together, the culprit could be found --and whacked with a wicked sharp dwarven axe!

Reading the leaflet yet again, Roryn shakes his head in disbelief.  He is not even a resident of this town, but he is being asked to vote.  Oh well, if it's a vote that the Queen needs, then a vote she'll get.

But who to vote for?  It's a very confusing time right now.  Not sure on who is who in this town, he decides to cast his vote for the most non dwarf like behavior.  It's a tie, really, for the musician and the environmentalist.  "Whatever that is," he mutters.

With his mind made up, he writes down his vote and seeks out the Queen.

Selos read over the leaflet in his hands once more, and shook is head in horror and disbelief. He was used to fighting and death down in the mines, but up here in the settlement? Half the people here he'd known for years... but there was one he'd only seen rarely. She'd always seemed a little different, but never human. But those mushrooms had smelled like death...

He already knew who his vote would be for as he walked over to the Queen.

Staring at the leaflet, Mayflower reads it a few more times in disbelief. She understood the Queen's desire to put an end to the problems, but was this a bit too much? To be asked to choose someone to be put to death, someone who would have their lives brought to a sudden end...

Besides, she could not really believe the rumors of traitors among the city folk. The people she met were all nice and friendly to her, how could anyone of them be a traitor?

Mayflower shook her head firmly, her mind made up. She would not willingly condemn another person to death.  Opening the door of her room, Mayflower went off to inform the Queen that she had chosen not to participate in the vote.

After being alone for some time Ithilwien knew it must be close to time for the vote, so she begrudgingly heads back to the tavern to await the news and see if her fellow towns people felt the same way she did.

She has pondered a few things in her mind as she spent that time alone though and wonders if she made the right decision, there were after all some new faces in town. "If another dwarf falls because I was a coward how could I live with myself" she says quietly as she walks across the settlement to the tavern

Awakening with a start, Forraid rolled off the lumpy padding that passed for her bed in room 7 of the tavern. Daylight streamed through the shutter hanging over the open window. Thinking back over the evening in the tavern--the queen distraught over the death of Lun-- she realized that everything had changed. After speaking with several dwarves in the tavern, she was no clearer on the next course of action. Her heart yearned to return to her husband and sons and write off the trip to the Turalian mines as a bust, but feared a departure in the midst of suspicion, death and uncertainty would be most unseemly. Her family's reputation was good amongst her people, and she had no desire to bring dishonor to her name.

Ithilwien seemed cordial when they spoke, but the girl did not have great insight--except when it came to gauging the size of a man's purse or his degree of drunkenness. Thes Hunter seemed much wiser in the affairs of the community, but was too busy and distracted to talk. Selos Silverblade had never been warm to her attempts to be friendly--he knew her purpose in being there but had not offered encouragement, hope or introductions to prominent miners. His position as guard was important to him, and though she found it frustrating, Forraid admired his integrity. The singer only wanted to know if the story about her chastity belt was true (it was NOT!) and the other men were interested in meat and mead, in quantity. By the time the drunken, ribald songs began, she had headed to bed, hoping for clarity in morning light.

"What will the Queen do? If it was me to decide, I'd wonder about that Yoinks, who found the body."

After combing out her sideburns and rebraiding them, adding several small bells along with the tiny key, she flung an orange shawl around her shoulders to soften her stodgy bulk and headed downstairs to see what the new day would bring.

Duín awoke.  It wasn't a slow awakening, such as one would expect from someone who had been, until a moment ago, deep in peaceful dreams of dwarves mining and glittering spheres of silversteel.  Rather, it was the sudden alertness of someone who knows there is danger nearby.  Very quietly, he rolled out of bed and placed his feet on the floor.  There had been a murder.  That meant that there was someone, somewhere, who wanted dwarves dead.  Someone very clever.  Someone.... human.  And he wasn't about to let that person find him.

Although Duín had had his fair share of narrow escapes over the years, this predicament filled him with a certain, indescribable fear.  After all, up until now his enemies had generally been right there in front of him. Generally, the problem was a certain dwarven lord who didn't appreciate his jests, or a room full of rowdy warriors who were maybe a bit TOO rowdy... Sooner or later the axes would start flying.  And Duín knew when to make an exit, when that kind of situation reared its ugly head.  However, what faced him now was much more unpredictable.  There was going to be no easy escape for Duín, no back door to quietly slip out of.  He'd just have to make sure that he tread very carefully, and carried a big, big axe.

Hali sat up holding his head trying to remember what had happened the night before. It slowly came back to him, the terrible news of Luna's death at the hands of these supposed assassins or hidden enemies. Hali thought for a while to himself about whether such a thing could be true, where there enemies amongst them? Had their fortress been penetrated by those from the surface? It was all too much for him in this state though he was still trying to remember how he voted the night before. Still not 100% sure though he seemed to remember preferring to wait for more proof before condemning someone to death, a thought he agreed with even more so now he was sobered up.

[Still only 11/19 votes but I can't wait forever.. Since this is so late, the next vote is the day after tomorrow (although please send early rather than late) Sorry for the delay everyone, I just wanted to give everyone chance to get their vote in. For clarity, I'll use forum names for the voting but rp names for the actual kills.]

Queen Auraya called for everyone to gather in the central Trove mines where she prepared to read the results of tonight's vote. She was trembling slightly but hid it well, her father always taught her a true leader never shows fear. When everyone was ready, she stood and in a strained but steady voice began to read:

Ozymandius: Thes
Thes: No lynch
Moka: Mayflower
Halithore: No lynch
Scorpiain: No lynch
Ithilwien: No lynch
Bartok: Thes
Dspn23: No lynch
Mayflower: No lynch
ElfLark: NinjaMuncher
Aral: ElfLark

Vibs, NightOwl, Susan Calvin, Milkwater, Meme, Mirail and Coltaine did not attend the vote. [and will be killed for inactivity day after tomorrow if no vote is cast a second time]

Auraya released a breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding and announced, "No lynch!"

The crowd cheered and departed in good spirits but she knew it would be short lived. Eventually, they were going to have to start voting properly or else they would all be doomed. The silversteel had been locked away and only she had the key. The knowledge was comforting but it was also risky - if she were assassinated, the entire village would be unable to access it's wealth.

Troubled, Auraya wandered to streets to delay the inevitable sleepless night ahead. As she was passing the library, she heard a suspicious thump. She decided to investigate. The library was dark and silent, nothing stirred. She entered slowly, a chill running down her spine. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. She advanced past the bookshelves, thinking herself silly. About to leave, she noticed a candlestick on the floor. It seemed odd. Auraya picked it up and examined it - definitely only human quality. Blood covered one end and as she turned, the body of Selos Silverblade lay beaten in a heap. She screamed. Selos had been on guard tonight, his small dwarves frame was contorted and limbs were pointing in all the wrong directions. Gruesome as the scene was, Aura couldn't take her eyes off him.

A bitter laugh came from behind her and Auraya span round. A body was hanging from a chandelier which hadn't been there when she entered. 'The murderer must still be here!' she thought. Terrified, she made a run for the door, passing the corpse hanging in the centre. As she passed, she noticed it was a very tall dwarf and stopped. She turned and forced herself to look at who had been taken. It was a human! Pinned to his clothing was a note which read, 'Stop destroying our planet or you will be after NightOwl.'

Queen Auraya stared at the human body before her. It bore no resemblance to the dwarf she had known as NightOwl and yet.. in her heart, she knew it was he. Appalled by what she had seen this night yet curious about whom had delivered them from this traitor and the meaning of the message, Auraya left the library and went to tell Yoink what had happened.

Hamlick peeled his head off the sticky tavern bench where he had passed out after the Queens speech and groaned to himself, while gestering at the barkeep for more beer.  [Hair of the dwarf and all]

After a quick pick me up Hamlick headed out into the mines for another days work, on his way down the tunnel he passed the Queen who seemed visibly shaken.. he stopped and tried to comfort her but she was just mumbling under her breath about dead Humans that were owls, or owls that were humans (maybe that beer wasnt such a good idea) .. but from this he gathered that last night there was some good news... A human had been found and "dealt" with.. maybe the town has a guardian angel he mused to himself.

After the the queen's announcement, Roryn went to his room to try to sleep.  Tossing and turning, he finally gave up sleeping, and headed down to the tavern.  There were a surprising number of dwarves present this early in the morning... or maybe not too suprising after the events of the evening.  Spotting a dwarf he knows as Hamlick rousing himself from a long night, he shakes his head and leaves for the forge.

Knowing that if he worked long and hard today, he might just work this problem of dwarves and humans out in his head.  Might.  More than likely though, he would just concentrate on the task at hand, and hopefully finish his axe.

Selos was dead, that was true. But his spirit still lingered in the settlement. He had too much unfinished business in the settlement to leave, and strands of his loyalty as a guard kept him as well. Perhaps once the human threat had passed he would be able to go on, but then again, maybe not.

Right after death his spirit had fled his ruined body, and now it roamed the town at will. Earthly barriers were no problem to him, and he could pass through even the most secure door. But already his memories had begun to fade. he couldn't remember the face of the human that killed him, nor even the gender. And with each hour that passed he lost more and more of himself.

Now he phased into a tavern, and hovered in the air by someone that seemed familiar. He couldn't quite place where he knew the dwarf from, but got a feeling that they'd worked together before. Currently the dwarf was jsut sitting there, quite drunk, and staring at the others in the tavern. His mug of beer was sitting on the table before him.

On some ghostly impulse that he didn't understand, he swiped his hand out and felt it actually make contact with the wood. The mug flew off the table and all the way across the room into the fire. A cloud of fragrant steam spread throughout the tavern, confusing many of the patrons. ALl the while Selos just stared at his ethereal hand.

He may not be able to talk to people, or do anything important, but he was far from powerless.

Thes had not remembered anything of the night before, it was all a beer induced fog, but she woke with a feeling of intense dread. She stumbled down to the Tavern's common room, there were many dwarves here this morning. Dwarves were not known for idleness, so it was uncommon to see so many lingering before heading off to the mines.

She grabbed herself a beer, and with the first sip, it all came back to her. She gleaned the rest from the chatter of the other tavern folk.

"This is horrible" she gasped, but wondered why she had come under suspicion by two of her fellows. One is a confirmed dwarf, so it is not likely a human plot to rub her out of the picture. More likely random happenstance. However, that Night Owl did turn out to be human... she wishes she could remember who he has been hang out with recently...

Ithilwien, in her usual place by the taverns entrance, wonders why so many dwarfs are waking up unable to remember clearly the happening of the evening before. And why was Selos off his game last night, he was very good at his job and one cant imagine he would be taken easily!

As she sits there thinking she wonders about Moka..... why had she wanted to buy everyone a round "to keep them busy" is she hiding something or was it truly just an offering from the heart to her distressed friends. The vote from last night worried her also, at first she couldnt understand why 2 dwarfs had targeted Thes but then after finding the note warning us to "stop destroying our planet" she had to wonder.

Thes is into the environment and what she can gather from it, is it possible?  No, she to was having foggy memories of what happened last night! Or was it a ploy?

Hali was not his usual self while working today. Sure he never looked too happy at work but today he knew he would have to choose again in the vote and possibly condemn a fellow, innocent dwarf to death. This played heavy on his thoughts all day and he found it hard to concentrate on much else. He thought through every vote over and over in his head again even though he knew there was no two for any person save poor Selos' vote for Thes which he now knew was merely coincidence. Not wanting to be involved in sentencing an innocent dwarf dying without some information to base his vote off he knew for now at least he must once again vote no lynch.

Hamlick heard DSPN's musings about the funny votes.. and decided to speak up about his conclusion - While initially I believed it to be very suspect voting.. you will see one of them was indeed a dwarf.. so that throws the "two humans" out the window.. (Hence why I have gone no lynch.. not enough to convict someone)

Duín stumbled through the day deep in thought.  It was clear that his fellow dwarves were being clever... but it was a type of cleverness that involved more logic than gut instinct and appreciation for chance.  It was true; two dwarves HAD voted for the same person, however Duín suspected this was more due to chance than collaboration.  And chance just left you confused, chasing false leads and chasing shady figures into dark alleys... And THAT left you dead.

What to do?  Duín decided to spend another evening in the tavern, singing and mingling with the crowd. He'd watch for any suspicious faces, and vote accordingly... And maybe watch for dwarves who weren't there at all...

After a glum morning in the tavern common room, Forraid hiked to the local overlook, deep in thought. There was some inexplicable trouble here that disturbed her deeply. What motivated the death of the Guard of the deep mines? And why would a human impersonate a dwarf?! The fresh air and stony peaks gave the wandering dwarf merchant some peace, and she let go her questions.
As she walked back toward the town, the thought came to her that she would visit the forge of Roryn Skullsplitter. It was said that he was crafting a mighty axe for Queen Auraya. Perhaps the usually silent tavern drinker would speak with her...

Roryn paid no attention to the visitor in the door.  It wasn't until an apprentice brought it to his notice that a dwarf he recognized was waiting for him.  Motioning to her to wait, he finished the delicate step he was working on, and then quenched the axe in a water barrel.

"Forraid, isn't it?  What brings you here today?  Wait...I think I can guess.  It's about the vote, right?  I know that there are a few others who questioned my vote, but can you blame me?  What dwarf doesn't care about mining?  Or metals, or gems, or minerals?  It's a way of life for us bearded folk.  So until there is evidence pointing to the contrary, I believe that I shall still vote for Thes.  Guilty until proven innocent, it's the dwarven way."

After giving what is possibly his longest speech in years, Roryn returns to his work, leaving Forraid with her own thoughts.

It was time for another vote. Queen Auraya looked at the pitifully small crowd in front of her and read the few votes she had.

Halithore: No lynch.
Thes: Moka
Ithilwien: Thes
Moka: Ithilwien
Scorpiain: No lynch
Aral: ElfLark
Bartok: Thes
ElfLark: Coltaine
Dspn: No lynch.

Again, the consensus was no kill tonight. Relieved, the Queen thanked all those who had attended and went in search of those who had not. She found traces of a quick getaway at the homes of Yoink, Nicanor, Caketin and Susan. It looked like the dwarves had simply fled in fear.

Continuing on, she found the dwellings of MilkWater, Meme and Vibs left unoccupied. Not a trace of them could be found - it was like they had never really been living here. As she walked on, looking for Mayflower, she realised that maybe they hadn't. Perhaps the dwellings were simply a cover for their nefarious human activities and with the death of Night Owl, they too had fled for their lives.

Mayflower was nowhere to be found but her room still held all her belongings. Speaking to the Tavernkeeper, she learned that Mayflower was spotted just this morning exploring an abandoned mine and Auraya hoped she had not gotten lost. It would be a great tragedy if something had happened to her - Auraya made a note to send a search party should she not return by tomorrow's vote.

Worried by all the disappearances, the now weary Queen started for home when she heard a scratching coming from outside Thes' house. It sounded like stone on metal, as though someone with a love of rocks were attempting to prise apart reinforced windows. heading to investigate, Auraya was greeted by the corpse of Selos Silverblade. She screamed. She then fainted.

Waking next morning, Queen Auraya thought perhaps she had had too much ale the previous night. Arriving home, her new guard informed her no deaths had occurred whilst she lay passed out in the street. That was comforting, at least.

[Sorry it took so long for me to post this.. I honestly thought more people would vote and I didn't want to have to kill 7 people off for activity. Mayflower will be killed off next vote if she doesn't attend too.. so if you see her, please remind her! The next vote is 48 hours from this post. Some interesting stuff happened tonight so.. discuss! ..and welcome back Ozy ;) ]

[Finally!]

Selos felt an inexorable pull, sucking his spirit away from his perch high above the settlement, up in the roof of the Cavern. A sudden, inexplicable fear seized his ghostly body. He couldn't understand it.... he was already dead, what did he have to fear?

His memories had faded, so he didn't know which house he was being sucked into... but it was familiar.

Then he flew through the wall, and saw his own corpse.

A flash of light blinded him, and then he felt sensation again. His eyes snapped open and he sucked in a breath of air.

Somehow he was alive again.

[welcome back ozy] [to clarify.. is this the necromancers work? or just adding a player as so many went inactive?]

Hamlick saw Selo's corpse rise from the ground outside of Thes house.. he muttered to himself "sod this" and headed into the nearest tavern.

Hali, in his usual corner of the tavern sat pondering the days rather peculiar turn of events. Expecting to be mourning a dwarf they had instead miraculously gained one from beyond the grave, though Hali still wondered if Selos would be the same as before.

He wanted to ponder on the resurrection more but knew there were more pressing things at hand, who to vote for next. The time for action was surely at hand and he knew he couldn't sit on the fence any longer. He finished off his ale then set off with his mind set on finding any clues to base his next vote off, though he also thought it best to keep an eye on zombie Selos just as a precaution.

Selos was alive again... but he wasn't all there. His thoughts were muddled, and while he could speak, it was difficult.  His memories of the time as a spirit were faint... it felt like he was forgetting something that he should tell the Queen.

He didn't feel the need to go and drink himself to Oblivion and back like normal, so instead he just shambled around the town with a slight limp, staring out and watching life flow by through half-closed eyes.

THen something in his head clicked, and he was standing in a darkened tunnel. Torches on the walls flickered, blowing back in an unnatural wind as miners ran back up the tunnel, away from the horrid creatures they had woken. Selos himself was rushing down the tunnel along with the other guards, sword drawn and a vicious warcry echoing in his throat.

He slashed at the crimson-skinned tentacled creatures, severing tentacles with each swing. One of his fellow guards got sucked into the blackness, a scream the last sound he made. Selos realized this was a losing battle, and called out to the other guard to start retreating. before they got a few feet his fellow dwarf too fell to the beasts.

That was when he turned and ran. "Seal the tunnel!" He shouted out as he neared the beggining of the doomed shaft. Then the others collapsed the support and let tons of rock drop onto the demons chasing them.

Selos gasped in pain as he jolted back to the present, torn free from the memory he'd been forced to relive. His face was pressed down into the cobblestones and an older guard was on top of him holding him down. Selos could just barely see a curious crowd gathered around him.

"Urgh... What happened?" He tried to grumble out, but the words were barely understandable even to him.

"You just went crazy, started slashing at thin air and screaming. You nearly killed three people before we got here, they barely avoided your sword." The guard on his back growled. "Why?"

"I don't know... it was like I was back in the mines when we broke through the Silversteel vein and the demons came out."

Only then did the revived dwarf realize that he was ixing up the past and the present, his muddled mind realizing that he wasn't completely whole, not himself.

Huddled beside the fire in the subdued atmosphere of the tavern common room, Forraid consoled herself with several tankards of XXX Ale. No one she had tried to talk to had been any help in raising her mood or clearing the confusion of the events of the last few days. She had seen Nicanor Thundercheek leaving at a gallop shortly after dawn. His moony presence and obsession with the Queen would not be missed--nor would his snoring, which penetrated the thin wall between their rooms.

More and more had just disappeared, with all expecting they were humans. Perhaps with their departure, the killings would cease!

There was no rational explanation for the reanimation of Selos, the guard of the deep mine. It was almost as though he had unfinished business in the mines.

Not one dwarf in this town mattered to Forraid. At least that sniveling musician had spent more time drunk than singing, and she counted that a vast improvement. The Queen was moping around and her mother was off her nut, she was. Ithilwein hardly tried to ply her trade, but cheering up the patrons of the tavern was beyond dwarvish ability, so her identity was likely honest, if not ethical.

Before the fire died, Forraid called it an early night. "At least with that Thundercheek gone, I can sleep without the pillow over my head tonight!" she said to the room as she headed up the stairs. "Though I will have my axe beside my bed as always," she muttered to herself.

Mayflower sat on the edge of her bed and stared into empty space, thinking about everything that had happened. It was shocking how much could take place in such a short time. Just a week before, she had been sitting in the tavern enjoying the company of her friends, but it seemed like a year had passed since.

After the death of Selos, and the even more shocking revelation of NightOwl's treachery, Mayflower had spent some time in an abandoned mine, enjoying the feeling of solid rock all around her. She loved being underground, as much as an elf loved being in the forest. It helped her to refresh herself and gather her thoughts.

When she had walked back into town feeling slightly better, she learned that she had missed another vote. While she apologized to Queen Auraya for her absence, she was secretly glad that she did not have to choose a dwarf to be put to death. Another unexpected bit of good news was the resurrection of Selos. Mayflower was glad that the dwarf had regained his life, but the reborn Selos seemed a bit different. He had been behaving strangely, but Mayflower thought it was probably a side effect of being killed and "unkilled".

However, it seemed that there was always a dark side to good news. The tavernkeeper had let her know that there was yet another vote coming up. This time though, Mayflower had vowed to be strong and do what was needed. Her hesitation to vote might cost the lives of other dwarfs. Having made up her mind, Mayflower hopped off the bed and went out of the tavern to look for Queen Auraya. She prayed that her choice would be the right one.

Ithilwien, not feeling like going about her normal business, looked around the bar trying to make sense of this. NightOwl had killed Ozy and then someone else killed NightOwl and then someone brought Ozy back from beyond. Thes had not been seen but Ozy's resurrected corpse was trying to get into her dwelling, why would it do that if it had no recollection of events past. Forraid had been asking alot of questions, i suppose to help herself form a decision on whom to vote for but for what ith could tell she had not been successful with her inquires. Mayflower came back to town today after having been conveniently absent for the happenings the night before, maybe she was involved somehow.

"Without evidence to sway my opinion away from Thes, with her abscence since the last vote and the odd behavior with Ozy's corpse at her home i will hold to my previous vote" is what Ithilwien reports to Queen Auraya.

As an after thought though Ith asks the queen if she has seen Moka because she has not seen her lately

[Sometimes I don't have time to post during the day. So ya gotta be a bit patient before suggesting 'I'm being quiet. Wink Also please remember none of the flavor text that Auraya places in the descriptions is supposed to be taken to mean anything other than what it is, flavor.]

Thes didn't wake in the middle of the night to the horrid scratching outside her window, because she was passed out on the common room floor from too much drink. After hearing about the weirdness of the night before, she went home and put small bits of dried bat brains into a small dish, and set it out on the stoop, as one would for the neighborhood cat.

Afterwards, on her way about the town, she hears Ithilwien accusations, and approaches.
"You seem quick to accuse me... but have you any evidence?

I too was interested to see both Bartok, and Selos point at me on the first vote, and thought it may be a sign as to who were the humans. But with Selo's passing and proving he was a real dwarf it is clear those votes were merely coincidence.

I see Dspn 23 also found the same pattern, but came to a different conclusion than me.  Even though Bartok continues his suspicions of me, I don't see him as being suspicious.

However, it is interesting to note that no one died last night. Did the blacksmith come through on who the humans were targeting? Were the humans or the Archeologist too distracted to take action last night? Did the master of the house cancel either the Assassin or the Archeologist?

I think tonight's actions will be very telling. I doubt the humans will target me, because it would be easier to fuel the fires of suspicions and get me lynched versus killing me when they could target another dwarf. So if the blacksmith is listening, do not waste your action protecting me, use whatever information you gleaned from the no kills last night to inform what action you should take.

As for my vote for Moka, my dear friend has not been acting herself recently. I do not know if this is just a reaction to the stressful situation, or something more telling. Time will tell.

However, for reasons of my own, I am starting to suspect Elflark. If for whatever reason I am lynched tonight (or otherwise killed) look to him for your answers. I believe he may have some. "

With that soliloquy Thes wanders off, picking a random flower, herb or bug (and perhaps her nose) as she goes along.

After sitting thinking and rethinking things in her head it occurred to Ithilwien that the reason that Ozy was unsuccessful in his attempt to get into Thes home was that maybe the blacksmith had been there and not that the queen had interrupted him/it. Maybe she had made a mistake but what is done is done and if Thes is not a human hopefully others have a less narrow minded opinion and she is not lynched
"I will not be able to live with myself if my mistake takes a dwarven life" she says under her breath as she walks out of the tavern to be alone with her thoughts

Hali sat up in an all too familiar state, Head pounding and memories from the night before slowly pouring back into his head. He remembered sitting in the tavern later than usual trying to think of anything at all to base his vote off having vowed to not stay neutral any more.

cautiously standing up he replayed the night, or what he could recall of it over and over trying to remember who he voted for. Slowly it crept back in to his mind that he had voted Forraid, sitting in the tavern she had cut a lonely figure and seemed to be more distrusting than he himself felt. It wasn't much to go on but with so little else he felt it better than nothing.

He slowly got ready and decided to head to the tavern, still feeling slightly guilty at not having a better reason for his vote hoping to catch the Queen declare the votes. The thought of his vote possibly being the one to condemn Forraid sat uneasy with him but he decided there was nothing left to do for now but to go to the tavern and hope for the best.

Duín woke up with a terrible ache in the back of his head.  Perhaps I've been overdoing the mead, he thought.  And indeed, when he thought of the past few days, he recalled things mainly from the alcohol-induced stupor of the very drunk.  Groaning, he swung himself out of bed.  Time to cast his vote...

"The troubles here must have been made known by all those who fled the town when the killing began. All trade has ceased and the whole town sits jumpy and glum. This place must be cursed!" Forraid had been out very little the whole day. People avoided looking at her, and she dreaded the thought of turning a corner and seeing that singer, or worse, Selos the Reanimated!

Even a short hike to the high place could not cheer her, though she built a cairn--in memory of the old gods and to offer an abode for some helpful spirits of stone and earth. Being out of the narrow streets and smoky tavern were not much relief for the plucky dwarf.

She tried to ferret out a thread of a lie in all that had gone on. But there was no key she could find to turn the lock of these events. Confusion aplenty and fear, yes, madness and perhaps magic, but none that she knew to have lied.

That knowledge did not change her duty to respond to the queen's edict. She plodded home, mulling over each of the dwarves. She cared nothing for any of them, and there was nothing they could offer her since the precious reagent did not appear to be here after all. But there was none who inspired strong feelings. In fact, the longer the tragedy went on, the less annoying her fellows seemed. Most of them were now more pitiable--and drunk--than unlikable.

Forraid resigned herself to drawing lots for her vote and hoped that it would fall to the votes of others to determine the name of the one to die! The way that everyone was avoiding her and refusing to meet her gaze, she hoped that it would not be her that laid lifeless in some mineshaft or under a rock come the morrow . . . or died at the hand of the queen's assassin!

[Just to clarify, it wasn't Ozy trying to kill Thes. It was the archaeologist and the blacksmith did indeed reinforce the house. Sorry, that probably could have been made clearer. Ozy interrupted me going to investigate only. Most people managed to get their vote in on time.. I've been waiting for a reply from dspn23 to clarify his vote because it made no sense to me but I've had no response. I'm putting him down as a 'No lynch' because he did pm but I'm at a loss about what it wanted.]

Queen Auraya set off early and took her time walking to the vote. She breathed in the heavily metallic air and listened to the muted thumps of the miners below. There had been too many people sitting on the sidelines and as happy as she had been to allow it, tragedy could only come from waiting too long. Her fellow villagers began to file in and cast their votes glumly. Many were inebriated and Auraya wished she too could succumb to intoxication.

Lost in thought, it was only when Selos screamed and started attacking the wall did she realise everyone had been waiting for her to read the outcome. As the poor fellow was dragged away, Auraya stood and with her heart in her mouth, she began:

Mayflower: Thes
Moka: Thes
dspn23: No lynch
ElfLark: Thes
Ozymandius: Thes
Ithilwien: Thes
Halithore: ElfLark
Scorpiain: Bartok
Thes: ElfLark
Aral: ElfLark

At 5 votes to 3, Thes had been condemned by her peers and Auraya nodded to Kilotov. He raised his hammer and Thes died instantly from the blow. Auraya went over to her body and noted that they had killed an innocent. Appalled, her instinct was to pull away but she forced herself to shut the eyes of the dwarf she had considered a friend. As she asked for the pandagods to have mercy on Thes' soul, she noticed a bottle had fallen from Thes' jacket. Examining it, she realised it contained a heavy sleeping draught. It had been Thes who was spiking the drinks in the tavern.

Auraya had a lot to think about on her way home. She decided to stop off at Halithore's residence. He didn't answer when she knocked but the two were old friends so Aura went round the back and let herself into the kitchen. Halithore was laid on the floor, not breathing. His skin had the telling discolouration of mercury poisoning but also, he appeared to have been beaten to death by a fossil. The ammonite markings baffled Auraya. She couldn't understand why someone would go to the trouble of battering their victim having already delivered a fatal dose of poison..

Hamlick was deeply upset by the death of Thes.. another innocent had died.. and it could have been avoided..

Hamlick analysed the votes from the previous round and saw two patterns of who was voting.. distinct sides.. but which one to lend his vote to? He decided to await some of the others who had voted to explain the logic behind their choice.. then he would act on all he heard.. and what he deduced from it!

Forraid had been appalled by the votes against her. True, she was not a member of the community, having only been in the Turalian mines a few weeks. She had felt waves of distrust but they had not seemed unreasonable with the strain of deaths, reanimations, hauntings and misery.

With the votes against her, and only the death of an innocent dwarf saving her, Forraid settled into a blue funk. She could ride out at first light and return to her husband and sons. Would the people come after her? Would running away cast more suspicion on her?

Sitting in her room she had cast runes, prayed to the elements of stone and earth and written her husband a heart letter which she then burned. None of these usually soothing rituals was calming her.

Where could she turn?

Selos was back on the streets, focusing all of his meager thoughts on the present, so as to avoid a repeat of the earlier incident.

ever since he'd been resurrected he'd been seeing half of the world like before, but now he saw much much more. there were spirits flickering everywhere through the town, the ghosts of dwarves many generations past and of those only recently murdered. He could see them, but as they tried to warn him about the assassin all he heard were moans and screams. Their suppressed rage and anger seemed to be focused mainly at certain houses, but for the half-life of him he couldn't remember who they belonged to, who the spirits were accusing.

All he knew was that all would be lost if something didn't change soon.

Forraid awoke with a start. She smelled nothing, she heard nothing, and her room was black as an abandoned mine. Still, she knew someone was in the room with her!

She grabbed her axe and leaped to her feet just as a match was struck. The tongue of flame ignited the wick of the candle and the gleam of candlelight captured the rugged face of Hamlick.

"Are you here to kill me? Then prepare to bleed!" she cried.

"I don't know if I can trust you, but I have a sort of plan," he spoke calmly to the frightened dwarf dowager gripping her axe and willing to use it.
