Why do walls have very little impact in the game in general when it takes so much time to build them? for example how come cavalry can simply attack units in side towns or cities with walls with ease?, surely it would be more realistic if you had to destroy them before you could attack the troops inside settlements?. This would increase the importance of siege equipment and could lead to defensive weapons for towns which would further enhance combat by making it more difficult and giving smaller players more of a chance.

Now they have corrected the seige mechanics, city walls do have more of a use. A bonus of over 100% on city defence with walls makes a huge difference in my opinion. However I do like your idea of defensive weapons, its been brought up before, and it would be very nice to have some options for anti seige defence, for example gatehouses with boiling oil, or defence towers armed with balisters.
Currently sally forth is really the only defence against seiges and this involves charges out of your city and fighting the seige camp on their square, surely there should be some options for defending the city from behind its walls.
