I have had this thought that there should be an arena of sorts for gaining experience for the commanders. there could be single combat and jousting skills added, like in medevial tournaments.

maybe add some betting in it also? like fight for 1k wood,, winner takes all?

I think this is an excellent idea, more and more players are joining alliances which is great however that leaves the only way to upgrade your Commanders either to start a war or beat up on lone wolf players - neither of which appeals to me.

You could have inter and intra alliance tournements initiated by players as well as all-comer comps arranged by the king of illyriad - this would let all players who wished to do so learn tactics/skills without open war

If an arena is added then perhaps a hero unit should be added that levels up like the commander but can only upgrade personal skills not divisional. Gaining commander XP won't be a problem if they release the NPC map squares
