Esquire to VALAR
(internship)

Would you like to be trained by a top 20 alliance and don't want to join a Training Alliance?

VALAR is presently offering a different training option for new players: join VALAR as an Esquire as soon as you feel ready to make that choice, (we suggest waiting 'til at least 100 pop so you have some feel for things)

We will treat you as being in a training alliance for a period of 6 weeks during which we will:

  • Provide you with advice and considerable material assistance
  • Provide protection (not that you really need it)
  • Offer you the option of full membership if we both feel that will work out: you will be under no obligation to remain with VALAR
  • During the training period VALAR will treat you as a neutral player with regard to any conflict - not that we anticipate any will arise - we will attempt to protect your position as any neutral training alliance would and not expect you to act in support of VALAR.
  • You pay no alliance tax (there is no tax in VALAR normally)

We are looking for players with potential, we are interested in your ability to:

  • Communicate - not necessarily in perfect English
  • Strike an appropriate balance between combat and diplomacy
  • Play as a member of a team

Please apply to Taelin or Gangas: We will not necessarily take on all applicants and there will only be as many esquires at any one time as we are able to support.

VALAR is also recruiting more experienced players as full members - see our main ad:

Nice idea, you should add a statement declaring those newbie will be able to leave the alliance without problem if they want, after that period. I am sure it is already this way, but some newbie can be worried about it...

Thanks Myr, Rill and JimJams,

actually the bit about leaving is such a good point it is there already:

Offer you the option of full membership if we both feel that will work out: you will be under no obligation to remain with VALAR

One of the good things about this game is that alliances now publish a few more details about themselves so that newbes can get a little bit more of an idea about what they are letting themselves in for by joining an alliance.

This internship thing gives me the impression that Valar have something special in the way of training and experience that other alliances may not and yet some of the training allainces are actually ranked above Valar.

The best selling point that a training alliance has is the "protection" that it affords because it is classified as a training alliance and generally acknowledged that any attacks on its members could well result in the perpertrator's cities being razed.

Imo  Valar's internship does not offer the same level of protection as training alliances. I am afraid I disagree with Taelin when implies that newbes do not really need protection. They most certainly do.

I am not at all confident that Valar can or are able to offer any adequate protection to Newbes because;

1. they are not a recognised training alliance and;
2. IMO in their last major conflict - the  War with the Coalition - the Valar leadership , Azreil and Darkone disappeared and deserted their alliance and Valar (with some exceptions) crumbled. If they will not fight for their own alliance how can they trusted to protect newbes?

 If a newbe wants to give training a miss and go straight to an alliance for membership I would not recommend Valar. You need an alliance that "is prepared to fight" for what they believe.

It's nice of you to base how an alliance acts on the behavior of two people. Just because the leaders are that way doesn't mean the membership is.

How about you let Valar try? If it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out. No reason to bash them before they even reach the ground.

Also, I'm assuming you've played this game before and are not the nineteen population player that you might be perceived as?

I think this is different from a training alliance, and generally a good idea to have a "training group" internally of the main alliance.

Only one training alliance is currently ranked above VALAR - nCrow - who are a fine alliance but the fact that they presently outrank us is not a matter I am overly worried by. (Edit - nCrow are not a training alliance so I am not sure who you mean)

I think this is a question of degree and emphasis: if I thought that protection was irrelevant I would not have mentioned it, however in my view it is rare for a new player who behaves reasonably to attract hostility, it does happen from time to time I accept but usually from a fellow relatively new player.

I am not sure what degree of protection you believe most new players require - if you can think of an example of a new player needing protection in excess of that which VALAR is presently able to offer please provide it.

VALAR is not and does not pretend to be a training alliance in the traditional sense, we are however offering a different training opportunity for those who are interested, it may not be for everyone, but it is designed as an option to allow people a taste of our alliance, not expose them to risk and not expect them to stay if they don't want to.

VALAR's leadership is not the same as at the time of the war: None of the present leaders of VALAR were involved in that leadership. I am not sure, (as you have not mentioned any alias you go by!) how much you know about the circumstances of the last war but I don't believe that VALAR can be fairly criticised for crumbling when faced with attack from as many quarters as we faced and our leadership taking a sudden career break -  it is a testament to the strength of some the characters involved that we are still alive and kicking today.

In fact the criticism I hear from time to time from some is still of the old variety that VALAR is a leopard which has not changed its spots.

Neither view is correct: we have demonstrated for the best part of a year that we will not engage in unwarranted aggression, and have resolved most incidents with diplomacy (save one which has been discussed/dissected/flogged entirely to death (I trust) elsewhere on these forums). We are no more or less peaceful than most other major alliances at present.

I believe that we are a good alliance with an interesting history who can provide a new training option which may suit some new players.
