This has probably been mentioned before but if we have a research item underway it would be nice to queue up the research that comes after it if you have the other pre-reqs. I figure since research can only be delayed (saboteurs) and not be cancelled, this would not be a problem. So for example, being able to queue up Tenancy while Landholding is underway.

Just throw in something fast and irrelevant, I put a mark of fear between spearfishing and angling.

Digging this one out, because even though I'm using dunnoob's workaround as well, I don't see why we can't queue the next research on the same tree branch, except that the code would be a little more complex.

Especially since you can't cancel research once queued, I think you should be able to research what the research in the queue unlocks. The current situation would be comparable to not being able to enqueue 2 subsequent levels of one building, so it's even a bit inconsistent.

The workaround is a bit tedious, considering the limit of 2 research in a queue and the length of some researches.

Yes!
Pedantic counterargument (which I don't necessarily hold): Yes ... Unless it is assumed that your researchers won't know the next step until they've researched the current step.

I'm conflicted about whether (a) a researcher knows about the end-point they want to achieve (at the leaf-end of the tech tree) and have to work through all the intermediate researches to get there, or (b) whether they take the researches as a path of discovery, without knowing the endpoint.

If (a), then your suggestion works; I think Illy supports this, because the whole research tree is available to view, so you know what's possible. If some of the tree is hidden, then I would go with (b).
