Check out our latest dev blog post with a preview of the upcoming Alliance medal design system.

http://www.illyriad.co.uk/blog/index.php/2012/05/feature-preview-alliance-medals/" rel="nofollow - http://www.illyriad.co.uk/blog/index.php/2012/05/feature-preview-alliance-medals/

I'm not at liberty to share any additional details, aside from what is in the blog post, at this time. But we will have a full description of the system and how it works available closer to when it goes into the live game.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear what you all think of the idea. Are you excited to get to customize and award medals within your Alliances? :)

Edit again since with more info it was not redundant

im sure they will allow alliances to make their own medals :P if not then im for a improved system :D

((Edit to state that my post was redundant ))

"With this new option players will be able to design a medal and award it to a player (or players) within their Alliance."...form the blog, cow medals are on rill...

In the interest of being super-duper clear, players do not draw or create their own artwork to use in these. You'll create a medal out of pre-designed pieces put together within the designer. You choose color, shapes, layers, gems, etc. :)

Cow Medals?
YES!

Edit: So there's gotta be a cow in the template, right?

And crows! we want crows!  I'm guessing the Eagles will want Eagles and that H? will want ...

Question marks?

I'm just tossing it out as an idea for the standard icon set, I think Crow, Eagle and/or a generic bird might get heavy use.

In a past life (and game), Harmless' forums had an award system which we had put to good use, and it's a feature we miss (and will eventually revive after some systems consolidation).  We had campaign participation medals with a contextual iconic shape over a standard background, military-styled medals for great sacrifices or losses in defense of another, ribbon graphics for special contributions or exceptional performance, etc..  This would make a great addition to the game.

Let me be the first to request (in case it's not already planned) that information about player medals be made public through the xml feeds or at least accessible as an alliance-private feed so we can sync the information to all the places where an alliance congregates (which I'm sure frequently ends up being off-site).  Second and equally important is allowing alliances to upload their own medal graphics.  It doesn't take much accumulation before generic or formulaic graphics with no topical or contextual components become a meaningless jumble.

If either of these features are not supported, we'll probably still end up not using the system but sticking entirely with something we roll ourselves.

While we can't promise to take every request for shapes, any input on what you'd like is welcome. :)

I hope there will also be a wide range of colours.  Don't forget pink and purple!

IMHO any huggin related medals should be banned from the outset, as I believe this will encourage that type of abhorrent behaviour.

You have an objection to ravens?  Is your problem only with Huggin, or do you also not like Muggin?

Ravens are ok, just don't hug them, prolly peck out your eyes.  Muggin? as in demanding someone to hand over their wallet? ofc I would have a problem with that, I may be an ork but we raid, we dont mug.

look up Huggin and Muggin (or sometimes spelled Munnin)

I do apologies Rill, I thought you were condoning mugging.

I propose a new alliance called Huggin and Muggin.  This will be a Norse bird-themed alliance (bonuses for one-eyed members) based on quick, profit-oriented raids on anyone who accepts a hug from a member of the alliance in GC.

Ryelle briefly tried starting an alliance called Odin's Crows (oCrow) with Huggin and Munnin as mascots.  For some reason, that didn't work out ...

It would be nice if my alliance can give medals to other players.  Otherwise I'd say that I'm more excited when I find a 16 on a coastal square... ;-)

This is most definitely a great idea for encouragement within alliances. I hope we will be able to offer award medals across alliances to those who provide a service 'above and beyond' normal duties. Well done, Devs Smile

16 is great until we find out that coastal sov buildings (fishing hut?) costs 2K res/hour to maintain per level....

In other news I would like a shark (preferably with Lazor beams).  SC promised (or at least he didn't say no, which means yes, right?) me a shark with lazor beams.

If there is upkeep it will be clay and stone... because our devs hate Orcs+Dwarves apparently.

And ye i'm not too fussed about medals... If I've ever done anything worth showing off then people will probably remember without me wearing a badge. As the person above inferred: sov fixes and fishing huts pl0x (and crafting... and magic schools... etc.)

For a second I got really excited cause I thought that these were alliance specific unit insignias like the factions have.  Wouldnt that be super?

Still a very cool idea.  Bravo.

it would be a really good way to raise funds for the game to allow alliances to buy certain designs for themselves, the game should really focus on making money so they can provide better gameplay

An awesome idea, but I think game medals or other such recognition should typically be based on specific accomplishments within the game.  i.e. Destroying a certain xp worth of enemy forces, selling a certain gold value of goods & resources, contributing a certain number of points in a tournament, etc.
If it's left up to the whims of each alliance, some will just give 'em out like candy for good behaviour, instead of being earned for actually accomplishing something significant.  That being said, there is also value in identifying non-quantitative contributions.  Perhaps there could be a limited number of such rewards?
Maybe there's a place for both methods of recogition? (i.e. Specific milestone accomplishments, versus player-arbitrated designations.)

Should that not be left up to each alliance, since these medals are alliance based and not gameplay based?
Gameplay allready has its rewards with the ranking system

My question is simple: Is this pretty, but useless to gameplay , fluff supossed to distract us from the still missing sov of watertiles? That was going to happen within a week of the  last major release, yet a month later we are still waiting.

It's not meant to distract you from anything, no. We've already commented on the status of water sov and have apologized for its unexpected lateness. This is just another project that has been in the works behind the scenes that we are now sharing with you. At any moment we've got many different projects in the works, not just one.

Luna, will people be able to keep any earned medals when they leave an alliance? As a training alliance (FDU), many of our members go on to graduate to other alliances and our members are eager to know if they will be able to take any medals earned while in FDU with them when they graduate.

Only orc thieves.  The devs are going to put in that limitation in the hopes that Createure will stop complaining about "balance."
