Hello Dear Community,
I have been playing Illyriad for the past to weeks and I definitely intend to stay. Still, the game does not require as much attention as some others, and there is a lot of 'downtime' inbetween actions. Because of this, I wanted to ask the community to recommend some other tried and worthwhile browser games. Naturally, I will share some of my personal favourites as well if anyone's interested. Oh, and I wanted to assure you mods and other caring people that I am far from trying to snatch any players away from Illy. Also I am not affiliated/am not advertising any games - in fact I am trying to find a game for myself in a more effective way than via google.
By the way, my definition of a worthwhile browser game is the following:
- Not P2W or subscription based (Illyriad's business model is most acceptable, most other games are atrocious in this respect) - A fair level of complexity in the game mechanics - Can be a Computer Board Game, Collectible Card Game, Strategy, RPG - Possibly no s-f or space setting - Would be good if the game was not horribly repetitive and grindy - A decent level of in-game progression - Interaction with other players (you wouldn't believe how many games don't do this right)
Thanks in advance for all suggestions, I will share mine if someone else should be interested.
Nalgore.

Hi Nalgore I'm on the lookout for good online games too. So far I have found Illyriad superiour to most in that its paid elements don't confer unfair advantage to buyers and there is lots of PvE. The community here is also active and supportive, too. One game I found surprisingly fun (since I don't usually go for this type of game) is Pirates of the Burning Sea (Sony Online). Set in the 18th century Caribbean, you can sail for a country (Spain, Britain, etc.) as a merchant, naval officer, or privateer - or be a pirate (of course!). It's 3D and the towns/ports are nicely designed and individual. Lots of quests (PvE) - PvP is totally optional and restricted to certain areas of the map. Lots of active "societies" with different goals. You level up by gaining XP in quests and battles and can buy better ships etc. at higher levels. I find there's something thrilling about watching an enemy ship's guns flash in the distance and seconds later water erupting around your ship and hearing the sound of splintering wood...and then the satisfaction of seeing your rounds find their mark (or not!). The game has its own version of Prestige but it doesn't give anyone unfair advantage. Anyway, I hope I don't come across as sounding like I work for Sony but I find the game is well done and is a nice change of pace. There might be just one downside for some people - there is a large download involved.

A nice game to do in between is "Puzzle Pirates". Based on a pirate theme, you do different mini games to perform actions (like loading cannons, sailing, pumping out the water, etc...). In a combined effort of a crew of 1 up to over 200 players per ship, there are battles against other ships (player and NPC ones). Further you can do some trading, and there are taverns to loose your hard earned in game currency with poker, spades, etc...
The optic seems somehow childish and colourful, but the gameplay really is fun =) (But beware: Quiting during some sea fight leads to possible loss of that fight => plan how much time you have, before starting something time consuming... )

I used to play a couple of other browser games, tribal wars and lord of ultima. Tribal wars was a very unforgiving experience, lord of ultima was friendlier and a little more in-depth. I have tried many others which are very similar or identical to these two games. None compared to illy, imho, and the only worthwhile experience I gained was the knowledge illy was a superior game. So they were worthwhile...
*Edit* I should have said they were both empire building games.

I quite enjoyed "Immortal Cities: Nile Online" and am currently playing some "human-age".

Nile Online (the trading game) really hooked me for about a month, but then I found myself thinking "so what?"
Stronghold Kingdoms is pretty, but the designers have decided they want to force PvP on players, so it quickly becomes really, really nasty. (Not as nasty as Travian, but nearly!)
I really liked the feel of Grepolis, but it soon turns into just another game of competitive bullying (much like Travian.)
I've tried plenty that are worse than the above!
So, nothing I can really recommend - though I'll be watching this thread with interest, as I'm always on the look out for good games!

I have played PBM since it was snail mail
and you had to wait a month for the next turn in an envelope. So I am very selective
in the games I play. Illyarid is the best one I have found in over four years.
Those of you who are also very selective of
the games they play should try Core-Exiles. It is a space game but far more
then that. You are the captain of a just a single ship but that is more then
enough. You can be whatever you want to be in a very large expanse with
hundreds of worlds to visit. It will take you MONTHS to realise the enormity of
the game and also realise that you need more MONTHS to get anywhere at all.
There is NO PvP but to loads of NPCs
to keep you happy if that is what you
want. Trolls can’t exist there and those who have to think about what they want
to do fade away quickly. There is a good community if you feel the need to chat
about something. Find it, read about
it, and try it.

Core-Exiles is a fun game, kind of odd but it has its points. Not a game I can play everyday 24/7 but a good filler for when I'm waiting for stuff on this game.

I've been playing this for a few weeks. It is pretty, but I have a feeling that it does not have the "Stay power" that illy has. If you try it, look me up: invictusanimi

lol I actually played that for a little while.
And it reminds me, there is an EXCELLENT game I would recommend for everyone. Personally I enjoyed it very much. But I am taking a vacation from it cause you can get burned out from it eventually. Your character stays forever so no worries about being inactive.

A game I absolutely enjoy while not on here is CreepTD.
http://www.creeptd.com/en
If you like tower defense games, it is by far the best I've played. You can play directly from your browser or download the client(faster). It's not your typical TD. It's multiplayer PvP, 2v2 co-op, Survivor(how many waves of creeps can you last?). If you like tower defense, I say play this game. You have a "skill" ranking and "experience" ranking, which rises and falls depending on the outcome of your games. XP Never drops, only your skill if you lose :)

Command and Conquer is coming out with a Browser MMORTS that seems pretty decent: http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/mmobility-command-and-conquers-new-twist-on-the-mmorts/
