I just wish the rules were clearer. Someone I didn't know told me to die the other day and nothing at all happened. Then they said my body should live because it could be "useful" and I should just die in my soul. I haven't been in gc much since and I know other people who avoid it now who didn't used to. I don't really plan to chat there anymore because I'm so generally disturbed.
I don't envy your job but flaming has been random and rampant lately. Even outside of the language blocker. It's not the whole community, but it just feels like a more hostile place lately. I put a poll up when I started noticing this. I wish more people would have responded to make it mean more.
Not calling for a totalitarian state, but a lot of us love moderation in gc and love the ban hammer. Don't let haters get you down, Luna. In your job, everyone will never be happy. Just take it a step at a time and remember structure and codification are a moderator's greatest ally. I hope you don'tn find that condescending because it's not meant to be.

I am not suggesting this, but I would like to inquire if - with the development of a more sophisticated chat system - there might be a chat which will be open to any and all topics of conversation.
I feel it would help to take the load off the moderators (so there need only be moderators in Global), but then if someone wishes to engage another player in a discussion on politics, religion, or Edward vs. Jacob - then they would have the option to simply create a temp room to have their discussion without censorship and then be done with it.
/me is pro freedom of speech, but is also pro censorship of Global chat where players shouldn't be forced to engage in another player's idiocy (it should be optional). (:P)

This is the sort of thing that should get reported to me if I'm not there to see it as it's happening. No one should say something like that to you or anyone, as it is obviously crossing the line.

Player-created chat rooms (in the upcoming chat system) will do exactly what you describe. Someone can make a private room (the "lets debate loudly about politics while cursing" room, for example), invite whoever they want and it will not be actively moderated by any GMs. Then they can set their own standards of behavior and add/remove players as they see fit. The only participants in the room will be there voluntarily and will, by their presence, agree that "yes, I want to be in the lets debate loudly about politics while cursing room."
Only "official" channels (Global Chat) will be GM moderated, same as is now. And formal complaints about harassment, etc., that happen in player-created rooms would function the same as it would now if someone was sending you harassment via in-game mail.
As I said, no one will be more happy than me when the day comes where I can say "take it to private chat."

I have a feeling there will also be a related "I-need-to-cool-down-from-the-LDLAPWC-room" room.

i will just say im sorry now, i know i said some urban dictionary words that bypass it before
Im sorry, we want a family friendly atmosphere in which to; send our armies and kill various animals, wage war, kill undead, try to stop a beating heart and claim land
We want a clean environment, so our diplo's may easily find the loot they search for and for the wives that desperate, lonely and possibly suicidal farmer needs
keep it clean peeps for real, be thankful for the GM's they keep spammers and other at bay

I am good with the rules. They don't bother me. I know we have rebels out there that like to cause problems and be hateful. The block feature is a god send. I use it a lot and have people that will never be taken off of it for previous actions of this nature. I don't put up with other people's drama anymore in GC. It isn't worth my time. I have a much lower tolerance for GC than I used to thanks to past run ins. It was ruined a long time ago and has gotten worse because the antagonistic nature of some that is now directed at other people on a whim. It isn't all the time, but enough to make me leery of venturing in most days.
Jane, I want to publicly say that what was said to you was way out of line. Do NOT put up with jerks like that in the future. Screen shot the offensive chat, place on a share site, put in a petition and turn them in. I learned the hard way a long time ago that you have to stand up for yourself. You turn it into the Devs they will hand out proper punishment if they see it is of a grievous nature. I have seen them in action 1st hand. They have no tolerance for that sort of thing. I thank them for that.

Just a quick note: if someone is offensive in GC, a screenshot should be neither necessary nor useful. Falsifying damning evidence of that nature is trivially easy, and the the GMs cannot trust evidence that could have been fabricated by an enemy to that player as a meta-attack. On the other hand, the GMs have chat logs anyway, and can verify without question any allegations.
What you should provide is the exact name of the culprit, the date and time of the incident(s), and a directly quoted excerpt. That would be sufficient to enable them to easily and efficiently find it in their logs.

I was asked in the past if I had a screen shot so that is why I do it. They can go thru their chat logs and verify it is not falsified. Besides falsifying stuff like that can backfire hardcore and cause more problems for you.

Actually, perhaps it would have been best if this thread had not been opened. I really don't understand the need for it to have been placed in a public thread. An effective forum moderator lays the down the rules of conduct at the beginning of the game and then implements them dealing with each case on it s own merits, in a fair and resonable way, and carries on ensuring that the standards of dev/management team are maintained without any fuss.
There is no need to open a thread using "robust" terms at this stage of the game. It simply creates an issue where one is not needed. I think it should be closed. I would rather spend my time enjoying the game.

I think a number of people appreciated the clarification. I didn't need it, but it might be helpful for those who like to test limits to have them be even more abundantly clear. Hopefully will save GM Luna some time spent arguing over chat bans. Which means she can plan more fun stuff!

Is there an ETA on the new chat system?
I haven't spoken in chat much at all since I started playing. I do watch chat a lot, since to me one of the attractions of any MMO is the opportunity to be part of the interaction between people from all around the world. After my first day on the server, I decided to keep quiet after a player was warned by others he'd be banned for completely innocent comment about his own living arrangement.
Just last night, another player was warned by others that he'd be banned for talking about Lady Gaga's marketing strategy since it would be considered homophobic. Now- as someone who should personally know, I can guarantee that what was said was nothing of the sort. Now I am sure that the real mods have the intelligence to tell the difference, but that's not the issue.
It seems that the current chat is full of wannabe mods, and what is a brilliant game lacks friendly banter that goes anything past giving new players resources and older ones snuggles. Just as an interesting topic gets rolling someone stops it with reminders that mod ban is likely to be implemented. I don't mind censorship- I will never be racist or personally hurtful to anyone, but it seems that at time this is taken a step too far, and I really look forward to a time when I can enjoy some challenging and intelligent debates on real-world topics with my fellow gamers.

Don't forget that alliance chat is completely unmoderated except by the standards of the alliance leaders (with kicking as the only option for enforcement). This is one of many good reasons for joining an alliance.

Sorry to resuscitate a near dead thread, but I want to make some RP Ork recruitment messages to use in GC and was wondering if words such as stinkin and gits would be acceptable orkish RP language?

That would entirely depend on context.
Simple rule: don't be a jerk and you are probably gonna be ok.
