What's the difference between all the different types of diplomatic units?
As an elf, I have: Trackers, Outriders, Waysmen and Farseer.
What do they do? Which ones are the best? Their definition is very vague. Are they good at different things? Which ones are good at spying? Which ones are good traking spies in town?
Also.. Most of the time I only receive a message afterward telling me the spies have been killed or they spoke or they succeeded. How can I make a difference in that? Is it only luck or does the number or type of scouts have to do with it?
Once I was approached (attacked) by an hostile diplomatic unit. I saw it coming from afar. What does that mean? How come sometimes I can see it coming and sometimes not?

Or after your three diplomatic units gets to my one city? What's the point of sending so many different diplomatic units to the same place?
Are we having a diplomatic war because I pushed one of your caravan?

Well, when you approach, it says: hostile diplomatic unit, so I associated the word "hostile" with "war", but we never know, maybe you were coming for a cup of coffee and a quick visit. We have a nice tavern, you might as well drink a beer and make some friends..

Check the different diplomatic units you have enabled. You have scouts / thieves / assassins / spies / saboteurs (and masters in the 5 classunits) It says what each unit is capable of.

Thanks for the link, Wuzzel, but that doesn't answer my second question: How come can I see diplomatic units coming from afar and how come he can see mine? Aren't scouts supposed to be discreet? And what makes the difference between a successful or an unsuccessful diplomatic mission? Luck?
Thanks in advance.

successful or an unsuccessful
in 1 he lives..in the other he dies...however even if he lives the other person may know who sent him and wonder why....

Not at all.. a successful mission is when scouts come back with the infos and the ennemy was unwary of them (of maybe just an old lady reported seeing.. what did she see? she wasn't wearing her glasses..)

The dev list below will answer the question about scouts not being discreet. Devs are thinking about a way to make them come in stealth until a set distance.
http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/current-dev-list_topic98.html - http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/current-dev-list_topic98.html
DIPLO UNITS TO NOT APPEAR ON MAP UNTIL PROXIMITY
- To make it less easy to just watch the map and work
out who sent them
About being succesfull or not. If you send scouts to him and he has more scouts then you in his city AND he has the Counter Intelligence skill researched, then your scoutmission will fail.
But it only works against the same unit ie thieves vs thieves, saboteurs vs saboteurs.
BUT this will change later too i believe. Let me find the link on the forum.

..MFrance | I have had scouting missions thrawted by spells. I have heard that sending waves of scouts can wear down the spell so the later wave can get thru. That is why you see multiple incomings.
Scouts get intel re: armies present.
There are also thieves that will steal your resources. Vaults prevent thieves up to the vault's limit.
Gee, my daily post count is growing, maybe I should quit trying to be helpful to others and save all my posts for my own questions.
Please don't but me Post Policeman.

Oh, also, I think with the proper tech, your own scouts have a chance at thrawting an enemy's diplo. mission.
Ah geez, another post! I'm gonna really get in trouble from the Post Police.

You shouldnt post back to back to your own post. Edit the post instead of posting another post 2 minutes after you post your first. If you forgot something that you wanted to add. This is kinda spammy.
You did it multiple times already on this forum.

Thanks to everybody for your help. I've learned a lot today about diplomatic missions.
There is still a thing that puzzles me though.
When I mentionned seeing the ennemy coming from afar, I didn't mean on the map, but in the diplomacy summary. I am alerted with a red tag that an "hostile diplomatic unit" is coming and will be there in 2h30m49s.
As far as I know, my opponent saw at least one of my scouting mission, but didn't see the second one coming. Why? Any idea?

| Wuz, I don't see an "edit my post option."
And why is this bothering you so much? You seem to have no problem spamming the hell out of question topics with all sorts of gay-crap. But let me talk serious about the game and you're nipping at my heels - even when I'm trying to help another player.
Are you the Forum Master? If not, quit trying to police me. If yes, then I will leave your queer-ass forum for good. Sheez.

..MFrance | You should get an After Action Report that tells you what your scouts accomplished, or failed, or died, etc. The Counter-Intel tech will enable your own scouts to thrawt an enemy scout - but I think this only gives you a chance, not an absolute thwart. So that might be why 1 scout got thru to you and the 2nd scout failed.

I probably don't explain myself clear enough. Anyway, I found a lot of valuable information about scouting and spying under that link, if it interests anybody.
http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/3-diplomatic-missions-in-illyriad_topic43.html
I'm learning a lot about it today, thanks to Waylander69. Most of his scouts never got back home but he keeps on sending me diplomatic missions and he's determined to found out what's going on in my city.
I'm brewing a bit of beer to cheer with him when his three next missions will be there (in 1 hour, in 3 hours and 7 hours).
Another questions: Does the number of (scouts, spies, etc.) he sends determines the lenght of time it takes? Or only the type of unit does that?

MFrance, I notice that according to today's Herald, there's some new death rune available that kills specific diplomatic units stone dead on contact like the c**kroaches they are.
Just thought you might like to know.

c**kroaches indeed, and c**kadoodledoo, Alfred Hitchc**k, spatchc**k chickens, Tony Hanc**k, cistern ballc**k, and any other mention of the 4 letters "c**k".
It is an interesting profanity filter, for sure.

I'm sure it's configurable somewhere; but low on the priority list.

Specifically on this question: each specific Diplomatic unit (eg Basic Scouting Unit called "Scouts" vs Advanced Human Scouting Unit called "Ranger") has a Movement Speed value which dictates how fast it travels. The number you send (of the same type) has no effect on the speed.
As you cannot (yet) band multiple diplomatic unit types together (each mission is independent of the other) or attach diplomatic units to armies, this means that diplomatic units only travel at the speed of the unit itself.
The numbers for Diplomatic Units have not yet been published - nor will they be for the next week or so - as Diplomatic Units are generally undergoing a "balance" restructuring next week. This mostly involves changes to the algorithm that calculates Diplomatic unit success or failure chances, and has been largely outlined if you read slightly between the lines of some of the sensible posts in http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/game-balance-diplomatic-units_topic201_page1.html - this thread here .
After we're happier with the algorithms and the unit numbers (diplomatic offense/defense strength by unit and race, movement speeds, carrying capacities for thieves etc), we'll publish them - just as we did with the military numbers.
Bear in mind, though, that Diplomatic missions will continue to have a substantial random factor in their outcome calculation - so reverse engineering the exact algorithm beyond general precepts such as "smaller diplomatic missions (when you compare mission size to target city population) seem to succeed more often" will be difficult.

GM Stormcrow

Oh, and for those of you scratching your heads:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=clbuttic - http://www.google.ca/search?q=clbuttic
Prior to the popular article, this result would have been primarily filled with actual examples of the design error in question (namely, the use of a regex to replace "ass" with "butt" irrespective of the string's inclusion within a larger word).
