I for one will miss the character of Amroth and the person behind it.

Amroth and I shared a rare Birthday (Halloween) and he was my Pumpkin Brother. His generosity and spirit and character were noble and true. Even though I was older then AA - I used to say to him that I hoped that I could someday grow up and be like him. He was and shall always be an Eternal Champion !

When I first started playing Illy, Amroth was unfailingly generous with resources, with game knowledge and suggestions and with encouragement. When he was away on vacation during the time I was new, he left instructions with his sitter to send me daily resources. That is the kind of man he was. He spoke with such joy and pride of children and wife, always pausing playing to go and read to his youngest son. When he went on vacation for a week, he left instructions with his sitter to send me resources daily...that is the kind of man he was. He will be sorely missed, by me and by the Illy community.
This past May, he and I were mailing back and forth and he told me of a book he had written and had found a publisher for. If anyone knows the title and/or publisher, please post here as many that I have mentioned this to are interested as well.
Condolences to his real life family and to his many, many in-game friends.

I did not get the chance to get to know Amroth well. He was in my alliance for a couple weeks helping us out an the bit of chit chat we has was pleasant as well as the few chats with him in gc. From other players an my alliance family I know him to be a great an generouse man. I am truly sorry for everyone in his real life an his Illy life that knew him well an lost him. This is proof if my eyes that god only takes the best for himself an with him taking Amroth is just another testiment on that.

Its not only our friends in ILY that leave an mark on us.
In the case of AA he was my greater and longest adversarie Till a few mouths ago.
After months of war letters and skirmiskhs whit champs, he and a few more champs kicked my ass, and raze One of my citys, when i refuse to surrender.
Them when i was whit out troops and also my fellow companions, he proposed I joined him, and to Have peace betewn ICOn and the Champs.
I din't Join him, But peace was made whit Champs. And he joined US ( ICon) briefly.
Thats what makes a great warrior, and even better leader. Dont kick helpless adversaries.
Today i think about the few time he spend on ICON talking whit every one there on alliance Chat and cant stop think that was his good bye to us. Even his adversaries had the Honor and privilege to have a littel bit of his limited time on earth.
I will never forget the biger elf from Illy.
Like i told him one time, fighting some one for so long its also a way of knowing some one.
I am glad i had the honor of facing him the battelfield, and i am glad that i had also the honor of being show mercy and accepted his hand in peace.
And to be recognized by friends and ex-adversaries alike, its indeed the trait of being some one remarkable.

I had the privilege of knowing Amroth for only a short time. He was kind and generous as well as being a good man. No matter what battle he was fighting he had a kind word for everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I had the chance to briefly know him in real life and I have no better example of the good man that he was than his last IGM to me (listed below) - I believe that he would have wished this for all of us.

Friend to the new player, protector of the weak, defender of the downtrodden. Amroth embodied generosity of spirit. He took risks when others might have remained silent.

Thank you, Amroth.

Hi all,
We are all, of course, extremely sorry to hear about Amroth Anguireal, and would like to join the community in their expressions of sympathy and condolences.
In the case of Case E. Deis' (Shrapnel/Grogg's) untimely death we placed a permanent memorial on the map because we (individually as the dev team as well as a corporate entity) knew him quite well in RL as we were in advanced discussions with Case for him to help us out with coding, at the time of his death.
Corporately we did not have the pleasure of the same relationship with the player known to you all as Amroth Anguireal and we therefore feel it is appropriate for the community as a whole, who knew him the best, to create their own tributes to this player.
We will miss his helpful presence in the game.
Best wishes,
GM Stormcrow & The Illyriad Team

I think the best way to honor Amroth is to honor the principles for which he stood: Fair play, good nature, justice tempered by mercy, courtesy and a willingness to stand for what we believe in. He had a special care for new and smaller players, and each time we help a new player or stand up for the weak against a bully, we honor him.

So, the player needs to be personally known to the GMs to warrant a statue. I'd say this is bogus. AmrothAnguireal was an icon. It's a pity the devs didn't know that. A complete shame. They should have. AmrothAnguireal is so well loved among the players, I say we rise as a common voice to request a statue in his honour! It's the least we can do and so utterly trivial to his contribution to the game and to the players.

I agree with Moonlight and Llyorn.
Amroth was much more than a man yet less than a god among the Illyriad community. I had heard he was ill, but had no idea to what extent. This is very saddening to hear.
On the other hand, how can the Illyriad team have any confirmation of this passing? What would happen if the entire community faked their death simply to get a statue erected in their name? This in itself is problematic.
If his account are left to ruin, can we assume this news to be true? If that is the case - can the community erect a statue for him?
Perhaps you can set up a community event in which a statue construction site is placed and once 25mil (or some other determined amount of resources is sent) of each basic resource then it will trigger the memorials completion. This will allow the community to involve themselves in it personally, and it will be the communities tribute to Amroth - not the DEV's.
All I (we?) ask for is for the opportunity to establish a memorial. You say you appreciate the community's input and feedback - please listen to us now. Amroth was a friend.

Reluctance
Out through the fields and the woods And over the walls I have wended; I have climbed the hills of view And looked at the world and descended; I have come by the highway home, And lo, it is ended.
The leaves are all dead on the ground, Save those that the oak is keeping To ravel them one by one And let them go scraping and creeping Out over the crusted snow, When others are sleeping.
And the dead leaves lie huddled and still, No longer blown hither and thither; The last lone aster is gone; The flowers of the witch-hazel wither; The heart is still aching to seek, But the feet question 'Whither?'
Ah, when to the heart of man Was it ever less than a treason To go with the drift of things, To yield with a grace to reason, And bow and accept the end Of a love or a season?

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Throughout his time in Illy, me and Amroth have not been the best of friend. I have several mails in my inbox that shows an angry side that most of Illy has never glimpsed. But we all have that darker side, and whatever you may say about Amroth is that he hid that side well. We fought in Illy, in a war longer than nearly any other. But when we surrendered, left DB, he gave us mercy- allowed us tto go free without any war costs. This is something that many would not have done, and over time I started to regard him as something approaching a friend. It cannot be said that we were ever the best of friends, but ever since the end of the war I've regarded him with increasing respect. My thoughts go out to his family, and in particular the grandchild he had a few months ago. RIP.

Hail to very honourable man.
From the moment Amroth invited me to join the Eternal Champions, he was generous and was always there to assist or advice you. He demonstrated a level of honour that you could only admire.
Amroth showed me what it was like to be apart of an alliance and he make Illy a better experience for all our alliance members, as he was always happy to chat about anything and everything.
Given the money, I would have gladly flown half away around the world to met him in person and happily called him a friend.
He will be certainly missed in the Eternal Champions and Illy.
Hail Amroth, the Eternal Champion.

I have been trying to figure out what words could be used to express the loss of such a great player, there truly are no words that measure up. There are very few players in these types of games that stand for something. I am proud to know just a few. This game was shaped by AA and those that shared his ideals. It is because of those ideals that new players are allowed to grow and are not tortured by bigger players. He stood up many times and stated he would not allow it. He fought in wars over it. This shaped Illy. I know the Dev's didn't know him personally, but he did help shape the game they built and continue to build. He was the friend you needed when times were tough, the protector of the new and defenseless. He deserves to be remembered as all great heroes are. He was the epitomey of a Champion.
I think he deserves at least an eternal flame to be lit and placed in this game as a tribute to him. I don't think that is much to ask. What do you all think? An enternal flame, for an Eternal Champion?
Regardless, I will name my next city Eternal Flame in his memory.

Perhaps a memorial monument somewhere near 0|0, that could be visited by spies to read the inscription - it lists all people that the game has lost in this way. One square in 4 million.
Actually, the in-game programming of this is the easy bit. The problem is the real-life admin of such a scheme, the delicacy with which it must be handled, and the reasonable verification of the circumstances. As a side-note, I think that only a small proportion of real-life losses would be reported to any GMs or players here; many accounts would simply become inactive.

There are some players who are more than mere players and who become the characters they embody. Amroth was one of these. In the game he was kind and generous always willing to help newer players and even when he was an opponent he was always gracious.
When Amroth told me of his cancer and then later how it had spread, I was very moved by the fact that he wanted me to reach out to other members in his alliance who were having a hard time. I have rarely seen a person so brave in the face of death. He never whined, he never complained and never once did I hear him say "Why me". He was thankful for his life and more importantly he was thankful for the fact that he could help those whom he loved, namely his family.
His death at 42, reminds us all, I think of the brevity of life and the fact that what is important in life is not what we own, or what we do but how we act. That was one of his favourite mottos about action and deeds and he is right. We are judged by our compassion and our capacity to love others.
As a player he encourage me to start an alliance and named it the Expendables..he was to have helped me further but he collapsed shortly after the alliance was created and never returned. I will try my best to keep true to his spirit.
Amroth's brother in law Thingello still plays...let us surround him and his family with compassion, love and respect

God is obviously short of angels.
You will not be forgotten in the hearts of many that you have touched, many that have witnessed and many that have known you, sleep well and know that our hearts are with your family.
This is a poem written by Mary Elizabeth Fry in 1932 which has sat in my mind since two of my best friends were taken to be angels, it's very touching and, I hope, comforting in some way, my prayers are with you.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle Autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die

I've been away for a few days and although I was aware of this possibility of this news it is still upsetting and comes as a great shock.
Like some others in game, Amroth and I never always saw eye to eye 100% of the time. We had as many disagreements as we had laugh and giggles but you can do that with people you have a mutual respect for. Lets face it if we all got on all of the time the game and world in general would be boring.
He was a knight in shining armour to some, the harbinger of death for others. He was never slow to offer assistance or advice and never afraid to back words with actions.
During my own health scare at the end of last year / start of this he was there offering encouragement and reassuring words even though he was fighting off the grim reaper himself at the time. This was the sort of person he truly was... Always there for a friend and I count him as one even though I never had the honour of meeting him in RL.
Illy has lost a great player and a hell of a personality and we should all try continue his legacy as best we can.
My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those whose life he touched.
Rest in peace my friend, I will miss you more than words can ever say.
Tonight I raise my drinks to you Eternal memory. You will always be a Champion!

I did not know Amroth the way that some have, but reading through this thread saddens me deeply that I didn't. I held back from him, largely for the same reasons that I wound up blocking St. Jude. The drama and interpersonal conflict are not something I'm into. However, that said, I've seen his contributions to new people, even up to a few days before this news broke.
I've seen the care the community has for this man first hand and I know that even though I didn't know him like some, I will still miss his presence in GC and I know that he'll be missed sorely for some time to come by all who even happened to chance upon him from time to time and those that knew him well.
Therefore, I echo SunStorm's rather reasonable request here, in my posting. It may only be a virtual tribute, but it's important to the community of Illyriad, to know that the game community cares for its own and can show that. Let them show it.

I am sorry and saddened to hear of Amroth's passing. He had mentioned that he was battling cancer, but I did not know to what extent. God bless him. St. George, pray for him.
On another note:
I saw that one of Amroth's cities is already under seige. Is it me, or does this seem to be in bad taste? I mean, everyone here is talking about an Amroth statue. Rather than doing that, how about just leaving the cities intact? I understand that cannibalizing players' cities is a reality of the game. But this was not an ordinary player.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm all for breaking that siege and defending his cities. Anyone in?

Looks like the siege has already been broken, but I will commit my pathetic armies to defending Amroth's cities should they come under threat again.

Fully agree with Tora.
I did not know AA well, but my thoughts are with his friends and family.

How do you know it was a troll? I read the link to that game reviewing site. The emails seemed legit to me (or they could be legit)...

Someone started an account just to post a link to another site with comments that would not have been allowed on this site. Sounds like a troll to me.

Except for the fact that this site prohibits posts that have to do with RL info. That link had RL first names (minor RL data, I know), but maybe that's how the Mods here interpreted it...
The main point is that somebody posted what appears to be an email chain between a friend of AA's and AA about his faking having cancer and how he's going to "out" him if asked. And that was like a day or two before he died, no?
I dunno. call me a conspiracy theorist, but I've seen enough stuff on MMOs that I kind of want proof. Does anyone have an newspaper obituary for AA (like we did for Shrapnel)? or a Death Announcement? Any outside of game proof?
I am NOT saying I believe this person. But, like in everything, we should not just ignore people just because they bring contrarian viewpoints with evidence that might be difficult...

And, btw, for those of you who don't know my history.
I'm the guy who worked with him and negotiated with him and, when AA single handedly attacked Valar, convinced the H? Board of Directors to heed his call and come to his aid. So only the ignorant can claim bias on my part.

DNFTT. Given that the other poster in the thread on that account was LionHeartz ... the thing speaks for itself.
I so wish that it were not true, I don't want to believe it.

Everyone works through loss differently. Maybe some people express their denial by pretending it's all a joke, that it's not true. I guess I can try to be compassionate about that.

I don't think you're biased, Kumomoto. But I loathe even talking about the prospect of imagining that this man's death has been faked for nothing more than some cheap mirth on his part.
After hearing the outpouring of goodwill and fond memories about Amroth as a player, it is hard to reconcile that with the kind of cynicism it would take to do something like fake one's death -- especially given how elaborate the fake-out would have to be.
All of the stories here corroborate that the man was sick for quite some time, and he shared that with other players over a long span of time. He even shared it with me recently in an IGM, and I barely even knew him. I saw that he was unaffiliated and sent him both an invitation to join my alliance and an explanation why. He graciously wrote me back and explained that he was leaving his leadership position to battle cancer, and to go play with some friends in another alliance. He said that he would like to join my alliance for maybe a stint in the future. And he mentioned his cancer so subtly that to imagine he was planting some seed with the intention of sowing the lie of his fake death -- with a player as unimportant as me -- is just too farfetched.
I think in life today we see so many conspiracy theories about the deaths of famous people because it is hard to imagine and accept that they are dead. we humans have never done death very well -- and I think this particular epoch deals with it just about as poorly as any other time in known history. It's hard enough when regular people die, but when public figures die, we really flip our wigs.
For example: if some unknown player died in Illyriad and the word got out, people would be sad perhaps, but they wouldn't doubt the story. Amroth's story is not doubted because he was a jerk who did this sort of thing all the time and no one trusts him. We essentially hope it is untrue, because of Amroth's larger-than-life role in this game, which, in and of itself, is a world unto itself.

Well reasoned, Glorfindel.
I just, through long experience in MMOs am kicking myself for not taking my normal "STFU until you can prove it" mentality on this one...
Unfortunately, I have found that MMOs lend themselves to serial lying (I guess you could classify this as some sort of sick metagame?)...
So, part of me is going to be really unsettled until I can see some serious proof that there's someone who had cancer and died...
Cause that other part of me really does not want to believe that anyone is capable or willing to pretend to have cancer over a six month period for kicks...

I just got the news, and I'm so very sorry for his family and friends. I met Amroth on the very first day I joined Illy, and I knew if he was an example of the players in this game, I had found a game home such as I had never seen in an online game.
I will miss his voice in GC, I will miss talking to him, both in character and out, and mostly I will just miss him. My deepest sympathy to his alliance members, I hope you can keep his spirit and ethos in the Illyriad world.
The race is done, my friend, and you walk now in bright company. Leave a light on for us...

I did not know Amroth aside from one brief interaction, yet I feel compelled to add my condolences for those who knew him, and especially his family and friends. Even without knowing him, it was obvious that he was a remarkable man, and he will be sorely missed.
Hail, AmrothAnguireal! May you rest in peace.

The following text was translated by google translator. I apologize in advance for possible mistakes.
Leaving, at least for now Illyriad, indignant, mainly morbid statements and actions of individual members of this community, including even some of the team of developers, on the occasion of the death of Amroth Anquireal.
Another reason for my departure was rude, ruthless indignation and apparent indifference of the owner of the game, that at least in a modest way to repay the man who is in my personal opinion for the promotion of the game, did more than any search engine and paid listings together.
Good fun to you. Hail The Eternal Champions!

I just logged into GC and learned of this today. Slightly stunned.
My own recollections of AA are of solid game advice, resource generosity, and his highly amusing arguments with SJ. Of particular note was his 1 day membership in ICON, which I was in GC to witness. Rather than be sad, I choose to smile, remembering those fun moments, among others. In a game of often faceless and unmemorable players, his was a truly memorable presence.

AA was certainly not my friend, but I have to agree with people who say he brought something special to illy. He was a personality. I think there are very few players who have not had some interaction with him, one way or another. I never knew he had that terrible disease. That doesn't change my opinion about the player AA, but some things shouldn't happen to anyone. So:
