There should be an option for scouts to bring back animals from a dolmen , then they could be used for the below listed perposes :

1. then these animals in a city should be used either as a soldier in your army which will fight and sometimes "flee" from the battlefield or might comeback (usefull when training commander) 

2. they could be traded for gold 

3. they could be sacrificed when casting spells . 

4. they could be used to research their species in the reading room of the library to get research points . 

5. the animals could be eaten when no food at the city (whiles't running in negetive food) 

These animals have no cost to keep but are difficult to bring back home . there should be a research which allows the scout to capture the animals and bring back home , but in this option the scouts have to battle and instead of killing , have to capture . so this will take more scouts then the amount of animals .

I think you are talking about something very much like Crafting, which according to Stormcrow is on the agenda.  I daresay we might even see it in 2012!

animals should take food upkeep instead of gold!
