How does alliance taxation work. is it automatic

Once you set your alliance tax, a donkey will go from the alliance leader's city to the city of each of the alliance members. (This does not count against your number of caravans.) The alliance tax is automatically deducted and kept in an invisible escrow account in each of the alliance members' cities. The donkey collects it and returns it to your capital.
